Don’t forget the fact that Fuji erased the memories of his daughter from mewtwo because he didn’t want to mentally scar it, but this just resulted in Mewtwo feeling rage and sadness for reasons it could not understand and so lashed out at everything around it
I like the psychological idea behind this, that our psyche still needs even the painful memories to be whole, and that it may not be ethical to ever fully erase anything, as it will leave a contexual gap in the other memories inevitably linked to it. Mewtwo had some of it's fundamental knowledge of life imparted by Amber, so having that knowledge, but having a gap there in where it came from that can't be filled would be incredibly distressing.
He woke up confused. He was filled with so much rage and pain that he lashed out against the world. He filled that rage with the idea that his life didn't matter. Poor Mewtwo.
Mewtwo seems to have an incredibly restless philosophical mind, and seems to want to understand where it's worldview came from and if it is right to have. So, it probably tries to search and recreate anything it can from those fundamental memories of it's youth, the Pokemon friends it had, the control and care it had, but Amber is just this big gap that it can't remember, and exactly the answer to the knowledge it wants to understand. The Pokemon friends are probably the closest it can get to recalling those memories with the gaping hole left in them. I do love that Mewtwo got to leave with an entire community of similar friends at the end of the movie though, that it never has to be alone with these questions, and with that powerful outlook about not fussing over circumstances and appreciating the gift of life.
It’s made worse when you realize they erased his memories of her but couldn’t erase the emotions. Which is why he wakes up so full of anger and rage. “Who am I? This, this is not the same! Was everything before just a dream? Why?…”
Originally Fuji's daughter dies in a car crush. Fuji was the one driving so not only he struggles for the loss but blames everything on himself. This is said in the Radio version that was available only in Japan

It is even more sad: Do you remember the whole plot about Pokémon tears having a healing effect? In the final cut it comes out of nowhere when Ash is revived. But in this version it is speculated that Mewtwo was the only Pokémon that survived the initial cloning process because he cried about Amber's death! So he healed himself inside the tank!

Technically 4kids still dubbed the backstory it was just cut out of most theatrical releases. It was restored as a bonus feature for Mewtwo Returns so it's not like they completely destroyed it like they did with One Piece
You forgot the most important part, which is that Dr. Fuji read a fairytale to Amber that Pokémon tears are full of life. This is why at the end of the first movie the Pokémon’s tears bring Ash back to life after he’s accidentally killed by Mewtwo
I grew up with the English version in Mewtwo strikes back, so getting to see the Japanese version with this first scene of Mewtwo as an adult was really surprising and probably would've gone over my head as a kid.
Mewtwo's story here wasn't cut from the English release, but jsut wasn't in the theatrical release. When it came to vhs and dvds there was a "never before seen short of Mewtwo's orgins" that was added in before the movie started. They had to make some edits to it but its mostly intact.
What's more gut wrenching is the performances by the actors in the Japanese version. Little Mewtwo is so confused and sad, while Amber reassures him, and tells him to live. Many of us just want to live with those we care about, the people who give us purpose.
Things like this is why generation 1 always felt off. It was much more grounded despite it's fantasy elements, while subsequent gens are so saccharine with their whimsical 'oooh we are Pokémon gods who created everything in the world oooh' backstories.
Waitwaitwait THIS WAS CUT?! I remember watching it, one of the very first movies I got my mitts on after I learned English and immediately looked for every movie that wasn’t available where I live
They were added in home releases of the first movie as a short. I remember owning a VHS and it was "never before seen footage of Mewtwo's orgins". They did translate it in English a bit differently then in the Japanese. I remember Mewtwo questioning about God directly in the Japanese version.
Mewtwo being memory wiped was tragic too. Honestly shows you how good Pokémon writing used to be. Feels like the original series peaked with a lot of great movies and fairly good episodes, minus Ash being stuckup for practically the whole thing. Advanced definitely had moments, but I would say not as many and the last season blew since the showrunner left before it was finished. And I stopped keeping up after Diamond and Pearl. Though I do know XY was considered a return to form, with the least liked series being BW and SM. ourney falling off the spectrum altogether. I get it, though. The continuity got whacky and it is tough to know what the identity of the anime is anymore, especially when your showrunners start leaving regularly. But yeah. This Mewtwo scene is great. Tragic in the right way. Written about as well as it could have been. It is even more harsh when considering the doctor probably went straight to hell for attempting to manipulate existence, so he will truly never get to meet his daughter in the afterlife.
@@luigihorror6455so in the original release of the movie they completely cut the scene, but a shortened version would be added later on (I believe it was added on the DVD version but don't quote me on that)
The cut backstory deserves much more then a quick summary. It's a great story, but is also incredibly sad. It's like when Lucario died after giving it's aura to mew, realizing that sir Aaron was a hero and not a coward in it's final moments.
I had this movie saved on my laptop. I always felt it was the best and most emotional thing Pokémon ever made and now it's impossible to find it anywhere.

Also fuji cloned for years his daughter but clones has a short life spam, the reason he did it is that fuji caused the car crash, and he propably keep his daugther body to use it
Mewtwo’s backstory coupled with his story arc in the first movie is that of survivors guilt! If you think about what happened in our past with school violence and the survivors of that they have a bit of guilt that they lived while others didn’t !
Also Amber’s memories of the world were what made the world in their minds, So when she died so did the world meaning Mewtwo was alone in empty space. He literally lost his hole world and everyone in it. Then got memories erased but still feels that pain, So he was miserable but didn’t know why.
I like to think I know a lot about Pokémon but apparently I owned the American VHS copy of this movie that didn’t have these scenes, so this is truly the first I’ve ever heard of this. I thought it made sense that Mewtwo broke out and killed everyone because it was being treated like some slave to be studied and used rather than as a sentient being, and that made sense enough. Maybe that’s why they removed it, because they could get away without the dark story behind it. But it is interesting to know that the lead scientist had more significance to the story than the English release would suggest.
