    To everyone focusing on the lateral G force indicator, it is wrong. Given the speed going into the tire barrier, it was way, way more than 6-7 Gs. Probably closer to 30 or so. The lateral G indicator is not made to record crashes. It would be a wild stroke of luck if it did because it would (a) have to be able to register G forces that high (I don't know if it can) and, (b) it was sampling the sensor at the exact moment of impact which is extremely unlikely. I've spent quite a bit of time on the track and have had an incident or two. This is a high G crash. I would have been sweating it big time while streaking across the grass, which might as well be ice at that speed. He knew he was screwed and given how he went off, was probably a little confused. A true "this is gonna hurt bad" moment.
    Broken ribs are another indicator of high Gs.

    • @Kayshots

      Even astronauts and fighter jets don't get 30G's when launching a rocket to space. so 30gs in this crash is impossible.

    • @nmode7420
      @nmode7420 3 года назад +78

      @@Kayshots you dont know what you're talking about.
      Fighter jets and rockets maintain a sustained g-force. Sustained g-forces of 6G and up can be lethal, but momentary peak g-forces can be much, much higher, and easily survived. Peak g-force in motorsport crashes are often well over 100g.
      In fact, Kenny Brack (an indycar driver), survived a crash of 214g.
      In this video, I crunched the numbers, and came to ~40g. Although I haven't accounted for seat harness expansion. So the true answer is likely between 30 and 40g.

    Ya, that’s one of the absolute WORST places to go off at VIR! I was an Instructor in a Student’s car a few years ago. He tapped the brake there and the car rotated to the left, meaning my side went into the tire wall. The onboard Data Acquisition said we were traveling at just over 65 mph at impact. You hit a LOT harder than that! I required stitches. Broken ribs for the driver were not surprising. Glad the driver was ultimately OK.
    There’s a reason we squeeze so much adrenaline into our systems there!

I cut my arm and my shoulder badly as I nicked my subclavian artery on the broken window glass. It sure didn't look like just a nick to me. There was blood everywhere. Damn rumble strips although the NASCAR guys use them all the time in real road racing this is why you stay off of them they upset the balance of the car reduce grip to the tires that were hitting it pushing the grip limit above and beyond what the right side tires could handle hence you meet the tire wall damn those rumble strips

    • @NicoRondet
      @NicoRondet  5 лет назад +8

      Jim hit the left side kerb a little bit harder than on previous laps and while still on the brakes rather than in a neutral state. That triggered the Oversteer, then caught of guard he corrected too slowly at the wheel. This is a steep downhill so all kinds of things contribute... This is a common off area at VIR.

    • @NicoRondet
      @NicoRondet  3 года назад +1

      You are stating the obvious here... The real mistake was not catching the initial slide because of sub par timing and lack of correction... The right correction at the wheel at the right time would have certainly saved it. But we all make mistakes... Again not me at the wheel but my Co-driver at the time. "Run out of luck" really? Hum... We should talk off line... The car was quite damaged but nothing the guys at Compass Racing could not fix. We did miss the next day's qualifying... But took the start in the race. When my Co-driver took the wheel and suffered through his stint... We only later found out that he had 2 broken ribs and a partially collapsed left lung... Tough guy!!!! Respect!! Sedans crashes are hard on drivers... One of the many reasons why I prefer racing open wheel cars or prototypes. Designed with proper (collapsable-energy absorbing) crash protection sideways rather than just a roll cage.

But he was on it because we need to be , he got it wrong but he was pushing , timing is everything and more so the faster the car is moving about.

    Lil too much curb and coming into oak tree you cooked the tires. Barely made that one. When the grass is wet let go of the wheel because you arent going to save it. Right hand left shoulder left hand right shoulder dont tense up. Trust your eqquipment. If you didnt have hans device and 6 points... You would have died. Glad your still here. It was a nice drive. Smooth lines great pace. You were closing on that guy in front of you. 2-3 tenths per corner. Im assuming you were in a miata? I bet that hurt the pocket book more than the ego.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 3 года назад +1

      I know the car is 4 cylinder but it sounds like a dual clutch transmission when shifting so I don't think it's a Miata unless I'm mistaken.
      Edit: In a comment a bit lower he says it's an Audi S3. I thought it was a VW GTI. I was close TBH because the S3 is a 4 door(or 5 door) hatchback just like the GTI.
      Audi is basically a fancier VW. One Audi model, (I think the S4 or something) is basically a modified VW Passat. There were some parts that were bolt on interchangeable between the 2. You could even install an Audi bumper to the VW to make it look like an Audi. I don't remember what model year.
