    • @ConklinMotorsports
      @ConklinMotorsports 4 месяца назад +6

      Lets take a minute before tearing the volunteer up...THINK FIRST! Guys were so eager to help they would forget to make sure there's nothing coming in after the first car..
      .For example some of you would have run out thats great BUT By the looks of it that's an oil fire, What happens to the cars behind the one laying oil down? Hate seeing marshals catch shit.. They aren't paid and without them we would have no motorsports..

    • @TheOfficialOriginalChad
      @TheOfficialOriginalChad 4 месяца назад +2

      @@ConklinMotorsports I appreciate the benefit of the doubt here, but there were some breaks in protocol here. Someone had called in the fire and all stations had the double yellow steady out (all cars slowed, no racing) about 20 seconds before he stopped (5:00). Its possible that Race Control was not approving a response t, but the conditions were not going to get any safer than they already were and the danger was only going to grow as the fire was growing just a few feet from the workers. The manual states "handle the fire first" and that two workers respond with extinguishers if possible. Under no circumstances should the workers hand their fire extinguisher to the driver. If approaching the vehicle was not safe for them it isn't safe for the driver, and handing the driver the FE does not encourage them to get to safety.
      Where I will cut them some slack is: they're human. These incidents are not expected and it's not uncommon to freeze for your first incident or fire. The first time i worked a corner a Formula Ford came over a crest, made contact with another car, flipped a couple times, landed upside down, and caught fire. I was already running with the FE before I realized what was happening. I arrived at the car and froze for what felt like minutes. Luckily I didn't arrive alone and was snapped out of it in just a few seconds. Everyone except for the car was escaped unscathed.

I'm curious about the Marshals that just stood watching when made the emergency stop though. Is that normal? When I saw them just standing and watching I did think to myself "well if it was me, and I was not required to approach the burning car, I'd actually likely be increasing my distance from said car", but is that not a part of their responsibility?

      The marshalls are PROHIBITED from getting out of their "area" - DEFINITELY NOT allowed to step onto the track.. or the area between their station and the track. Insurance Rules! Best they can do these days is... hand over the extinguisher as fast as possible and call it in on the comm system.

    • @fv8035
      @fv8035 5 месяцев назад

      YES! Multiple reasons. LITIGIOUS SOCIETY + . 40 years ago, we had 8 or 9 workers at every station.. and we were all YOUNG. These days we are doing well to have TWO at each station - 1 for comms and 1 for FLAGGING. 40 years ago, we were YOUNG - today we are OLD. Average worker age is probably over 50 now. Average DRIVER age has moved from ~30 to ~45+ or so. We, drivers and workers, don't MOVE as well as we used to. Climbing over guard rails and three rows of stacked tires takes a LOT longer than it used to. and is more prone to injury. Workers have no protective equipment (like helmets and firesuits). In recent years, the TRACKS have started to hire their own Emergency Vehicles (EV) and crew - used to be provided by SCCA. The TRACKS (as well as SCCA) prohibit workers from going over the wall to provide aid. The tracks mostly refuse to dispatch EV until EVERY CAR ON THE TRACK is "under control" of a PACE CAR.. In years past when workers were allowed to 'respond' we had a few incidents where workers LOST THEIR LIVES.. or were SERIOUSLY injured as a result of being on the track - so... NOT ALLOWED any more. None of us HEAL as fast as we used to either. All are factors in the current landscape.

      @@ghnl1961 interesting your organization has that restriction, I've volunteered as a corner worker several times but we were allowed to go all the way to the car, who would you hand over the extinguisher to besides the driver and what if he or she is injured or unable to move quickly ? Corner workers would also in general do a better job than the driver, provided you've had proper training of course.

      Corner worker's job is to inform other drivers and race control. Going over the fence, away from their post does not help that. Safety crew will come for the car. Unless there is an. unconscious driver on fire, you are not going to see corner workers over the fence until tasked to do this by race control.
      Great reaction by the driver in this case, and great reaction by the corner worker to hand off the bottle.
      Hopefully the damage was not too severe, that fire looked pretty big in the mirror.

      @@dbzcollector9963 It was definitely a multi-class race. I just looked up the results for Saturday's and Sunday's race (where Lucian didn't finish due to the fire), and the car with the halo that Lucian worked hard to pass seems to be a Ligier F3 or Ligier JSF3 and is classed as a Formula Atlantic (FA). The race group was comprised of P1, P2, FA, FC, FE2, and FX (formula Mazda in this case).

    Boy, those corner workers need a boost in their work ethics. What do they think they are there for, to look good in their white suits with all those cool patches? This just reinforces the Fact that you can't judge a worker by the uniform they wear.

      A lot of times they aren’t allowed to assist on track due to the danger. They’re specifically flagging only. That’s what the safety workers are for presuming this series has them
