I've heard these 3.21 arguments but all I can say is I just bought a 3.92 classic few weeks ago, I test drove 2 identical 20" wheel crew cab 4x4 night editions. Middle of road options, bout 1/4 tank of fuel in each and 200k on em, needless to say the 1st truck with 3.21 gears, I was disappointed in power, snappiness, butt Dyno feel, pull of the torque and i thought shit....really thought these hemis were quicker than this.....until I drove the 3.92 truck. WOW, what a difference. Instant ear to ear grin. As a performance car type of guy, lots of drag racing over the years, mechanic, etc. I am in love. The whole experience and feel of the truck is better. The way the tranny, snap downshifts, how the engine comes to life and revs so quick and bangs off gears it's like there's another 50hp under the hood. I'm telling ya, if your into performance and tow like we do, get the 3.92 U WONT BE DISAPPOINTED. also 22.4mpg coming back from trailer last weekend. I was impressed. Truck was also still on 87, not 89, me and wife and maybe 150lbs in gear/tools. What more can you ask for? I won't even mention the 1st gear burnout on clean dry pavement, dead stop, no brake torque, just punched it straight ahead, banged 2nd and the smoke really started billowing lolol, had to let off as she started goin sideways and those tires are damn expensive. I have no doubt she would clicked 3rd and laid 150feet of rubber till she caught. 2 perfectly even black patches, boy that posi works proper! Anyway boys get the 3.92, you'll love it!
i have a 2017 8spd 3.21 gear and just rear whell drive want performance in a daily driver looking at the 3.92 with Tru Trac. posi. but so many opinions can you help with your thoughst daily driving and highway.
I've always been a 3.92 fan boy but that 3.21 seems like the best all round trans since let's face it, we're not living at a drag strip with a pickup. Also I wasn't aware that the ratios changed in the 75 trans. For my next truck, I think I'll be picking up one with a 75 and a 3.21. Very informative and BEATS THE HELL OUT OF SPECULATIVE FORUMS! This proof is what I need B!
I was the same.... and suffered the same frustration. I have had a 3.92 geared truck before and loved it... But I got a tradesman Classic with a 3.21 and loved it even more... for how i drive... not to mention it is QUICK... So for my new truck, I decided to step up my research game and wanted to share my findings.
My 2010 sport was ordered with 3.92's and posi. They worked fine. Truck has now rusted out and I'm replacing it with a new truck with 3.21's. Your video makes me feel a lot better about going with this taller gear (as I bought what was on the lot and couldn't order the 3.92's). In the 13 years I owned the 2010 I never hooked it up to a trailer once and at this advanced age think I've made the right choice. Either gear has to be a ton better than my 1979 Camaro with 3.73 gears, four speed manual and NO overdrive. 3000 rpm at 62mph. It always felt like the car needed two more gears.
This is what i basically tell customers the .392 gears will get you performance and the response you will be lookin 4 in towing or hell even racing...the .321's will save gas and and a lil bit of engine and trans wear but its a double edge sword .392s at high rated speeds dont count as much..best way 2 explain it is at the end of the race at 125mph youll have a lil more to give bec. U wont b wrapped out as hard bec the 321's have a smoother range than the 392s so im guessin its jus diff strokes diff folkes
What surprised the hell out of me was a 392 geared 65rfe has a higher towing capacity than any other 1500 ram. And although the six-speed does suck donkey balls. I love my little regular cab Express 6-speed 3.92 rear. It's actually pretty good tuned of course I had to get HP tuners in tune it myself because nobody really tunes those.
Wow....and I thought I was a nerd. Great video very interesting. I just based my choice (3.21) on the fact that I wouldn't ever be towing heavy and nearly all of my driving would be lightly loaded driving. Bonus that I probably get a bit better fuel economy with the 3.21. I rarely if ever go WOT mostly because I am not an aggressive driver and the situations I am in on the road rarely warrant that sort of driving. I will occasionally roll onto the throttle gently up to WOT just to put a smile on my face but it is rare. In day to day suburban driving like I do I believe the overall experience is not that different between the two. Fun video though
What could one expect between a 2016 DS crew cab 4x4 3.92 with 275/60R20 tires and a nearly identically equipped DT crew cab 4x4 3.21 with 275/55R20 tires? Thank you! Awesome video!
The DS is going to be more lively. Matter of fact the DS with the tire combination that you mentioned is really good on the street. The DT Ram with the 321 isn't necessarily bad, but it has a nasty habit of being a bit sluggish through third gear and fourth gear. They're great from a dick with a 3216 isn't so much of a problem, but in general driving I would much prefer the DS with the 392
I ordered one. The 70 3.21. Hemi. 4x4. Carrying about 800lbs all time. I should be ok. Or the 3.92 would be better. Company truck and not gonna race it. Thanks for the vid
Awesome breakdown...I love having hard data to support a position. I'm looking at ordering a 2023 1500 Limited 5.7L with E-torque. I plan to switch tires from stock to General Grabber 305/45R22 (33/12)...its only a 47lb tire vs. the stock tire being around 41lbs. I'm assuming I should still go with the 3.21 gears based on your overall analysis - thanks
Yes, it has variable cam timing. Fords seem to have issues, 3.5 eco boost, not sure about the others. Noone else seems to have the problem... .5.0 5.7 NA v6, toyota..Toyota... etc.
Great vid. Very informative. Question : Will lifted trucks with big tires generally run slower or faster than the same truck with stock wheels and tires with the same trans and gears?
They will run significantly slower in most cases . In fact I can't think of any situation where there would be an advantage performance wise. We're talking heavier wheels heavier tires lower affected final drive.
What happens when you put the "Hellcat" tires on the DT? Who runs hellcat tires on their truck? Did cutting 1100lbs off the DS skew the numbers further than just the tire size adjustment alone, or did it not factor into the end result calculations? If you're wanting to compare actual gear ratios, use the same truck to take the available transmission gears out of the equation. If you're using the newer DT, then you should compare it with the newer DS, both have the 8sp trans. You're comparing apples to oranges.
What I'm doing when I'm explaining it that way is I am showing equivalent ratios between a car and a Truck based on tire size and gear ratio. In other words, RPM at cruise to give an idea for the difference in tire sizes between gear ratios and using a familiar platform If you can't understand that, I can't explain it any better for you
@@bmasontv Thanks for replying. A familiar platform is fine, but reading the comments below, people are using these numbers to decide if they want 3.21 or 3.92's when purchasing a new truck. Some of the options listed aren't available, including the transmission used. No one drives with the transmission constantly in kick down either. Having test drove both gear ratios when I bought my truck, the 3.92's definitely had more grunt throughout the power band, both trucks were 8 speeds, at the cost of 2 MPG's on the highway.
@misplacedcaper9662 Well, the gear ratio in the transmission is the same for every HP 70 / 90 transmission. The HP 75 does have slightly different transmission ratios. As far as gear ratios go, 3.21 or 3.92 are the only factory options available now for a v8. As far as the kickdown, there's really no way to give any other data than to show how these gears land at certain speeds and then to show what the kickdown is .. of course, the phrase "just go test drive the thing" is really more coming to mind. I ended up installing 355 gears in my truck and I'm very happy to report the results are far better drivability, and better legs than the 392. I've driven both, and owned both gear sets.
202-2022 Limited, night edition with 22" factory wheels- going from factory 285/45/22 to 285/55/22 nitto ridge grappler. Would you still recommend the 3.92? Will do basically zero towing and do 25K miles a year, mostly on 75mph+ turnpike. Would like to retain "decent mileage." Thanks!
Probably is a dumb question, but I will ask, I know I am 3.09 gear in my Scat. I've heard from some people, who I assume are wrong, but does it hurt my differential to do a light burnout on dry pavement with no water around?
Well, that depends entirely on what situations you find yourself mostly in. Lots of city driving no highway, it won't really matter. You do a lot of Highway driving, you we'll save about 1 mi per gallon, at least that's been my experience
@@bmasontv That's what I figured. Most of my driving consists of neither city nor highway. Mostly steep hilly rural backroads. I have 3.21s in my 2020 Limited 4x4 5.7 non-eTorque, and I average about 15 mpg.

hello i broke my rear diff 3.92 dodge ram 1500 5.7 hemi I can not find same model the country where I live I found something else 3.21 My question to you is whether you will will it work?😢
It depends on the year of the truck. And the year of the axle that you found. If it is A DS Ram then it shouldn't swap, you just won't have A392 gear it will be A321. That will work fine as long as the truck is two wheel drive
What your feeling is the excessive torque management they've tuned into the 5th gens, get a diablosport with preloaded tune or custom hemifever tune uploaded by the Diablo tuner and all that will change drastically. A 3.92 truck will always feel faster than a 3.21 truck assuming weight of trucks and tire diameter were the same. It's simply mechanical advantage. It's simple physics. The video u just watched is much more nuanced than people realize.
