  • Founded in 1836, Choy Lay Fut has 180 years worth of training concepts, such as the 10 gates, or 10 ten elements (十訣). First among them is the chop choi (插搥), a penetrating straight punch - often compared to the jab in western boxing
Chop choi sparring at the beginning stages resembles jab sparring in western boxing. The initial stage allows for only the use of the lead hand in attacking. This allows the practitioner to train the lead hand as a method of entry (setting up for combinations to be used later), intercepting an opponent’s attack, and as a way to open an opponent’s gate for attack. Defensively a variety of techniques previously drilled can be used, giving the practitioner more defensive options and making for a more unpredictable defense.
The next stage of chop choi sparring allows the use of the rear straight hand. This opens up the possibility of combinations and adds more stimuli to the sparring (the practitioners can place additional pressure on each other). In addition, defensively the practitioners can train moving to the outside angles to neutralize the opponent’s ability to execute the continuous attack. Later stages of chop choi sparring allow the use of various angles of attack to multiple gates. The addition of each technique over time builds a familiarity in both offensive and defensive capacities that makes a smooth transition from basic application training to free sparring.
This video is presented in conjunction with the article The Bridge from Form to Function: Choy Lay Fut Chop Choi Sparring by Chris Childs in the May+June 2017 issue of Kung Fu Tai Chi magazine.

Yeah, though, it seems Wing Chun is a lot more effective as an armed martial arts with the butterfly swords. Which was a surprise to me but it's true ruclips.net/video/ltUJljqVyJo/видео.html

I don’t think it helps that you guys aren’t throwing any headshots. Most people that want to hurt you aren’t gonna hit your body
