Imo, this movie is the deepest Miyazaki movie. On the surface, it's a mix of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. but to me, it's a love letter from Miyazaki to us. He's telling us to create beautiful worlds untainted by malice. That block that Mahito kept at the end represent the movie itself, a powerful reminder that we have the power to create something beautiful.

A very beautiful way to look at it! I definitely felt that this story was very personal to him and that he incorporated a lot of his own childhood.

Also, the duality in the movie is key - and a source of visual gags (the old housemaids in reality are dolls on a shelf in a scene in the alternate universe). well they are also young versions of themselves. I believe that, in a way, the great grand uncle and the boy are the same character. also, that the boy is us, the public. someone below said that the movie is a ”rehash”. of course i saw the visual references, but i prefer to call them ”a best-of collection”. and, ”rehash” or not, nothing in animation this year even comes close. spiderverse fans, come after me :)).

There is no need to compare it to his other works. It's a unique work of art.

Miyazaki has made some of my favorite movies, literal top 3 contenders for me, but this one just did not connect with me. I know Miyazaki's story. I understand the symbolism in this film and how it relates to his upbringing, and the losses he's endured. I respect this movie, but can't help but be disappointed in it. I don't think the dream logic works in a coherent or symbolically interesting way. I don't think the film does justice to many of the topics it touches on. I'm open to very loose stories, but the meandering did not help this film. It was beautiful, but so often the character designs felt like rehashes of previous Ghibli films. I'm aware that this movie is partly about the Ghibli and Miyazaki's creation, so it make sense that it would retread visual territory, but I was hoping for something more. The world building is a significant step down from Ghibli's classics. It just doesn't have the sense of gravitas, plausibility, and history that their other worlds had. If Princess Mononoke is a 10/10, The Boy and the Heron is a 5/10.

We completely agree on Princess Mononoke. The pacing is definitely going to be an issue for a lot of people. I totally get that, but I do appreciate your thoughts on the film. Very well put and concise. Thank you so much for watching the review.
