  • Rasheed Wallace says the NBA is not as tough of a league as it used to be and blames the current style of play for not being as entertaining. Tyler says the style might be different, but that the league has never been more skilled and points to big men like Joel Embiid, Giannis and Nikola Jokic as examples of guys who can do it all.

I don't know if it's because I've become older than everyone at this point (except for Chris Paul & LeBron) but it just doesn't feel the same when you don't idolize anybody anymore. None of these guys today are people that I look up to or consider heroes. Hell I don't even really consider most of them dependable. Maybe Steph Curry is the one guy who I'd "put my money on" but I haven't gone to a game in years because I don't really consider the product worth paying for. It used to be my Christmas tradition to watch the games all day, but now I don't even bother subscribing to a TV package. Today is a nice warm day and I'll probably just go play basketball myself today. The last few years I've been far more interested in just playing in the mens league in my town than I am watching professional basketball. I miss when the league was a 80-90 point game.

Ima young OG myself but shaq in the paint 40 times in a game is way easier to do,than players of all sizes shooting 30 foot shots. Logic is ok to use when criticizing something you DON'T like. Players are easily more skillful now compared to the 90s & early early 00s,but not necessarily better SPECIALISTS & i would definitely love to see more physical defense allowed by the rules. Players are more skilled, the NBA has made it easier to score, and NBA teams are using actions/spacing that are much more difficult to stop. All these things can be true at the same time. Certain player archetypes like non-switchable 4s (think Zach Randolph) are phased out the league due to spacing. And it's almost impossible to defend spread PNR combined with exit screens by extremely skilled players. It would be difficult for an NBA player to defend a college player receiving a pin down screen then dribble hand off, let alone an NBA player.

    • @jorgenorberto293

@@ThreadAndCircuses1 there's a factor that you didn't account for. Nowadays we see carrying and travels all game, all the games. Players like AI "the answer" would absolutely LOVE to play in this era. That plus the fact that when you enter the paint you don't have the center and the PF welcoming you with body slams, makes a shit ton of difference. And it's a damn shame that what we see all over is any and all players shooting 3's. It's a very different game in that last 12 years.
Maybe if we come back to some of the previous rules, promoting defense, it would make it more interesting. Right now, it's boring.

I counted traveling in the NBA making it easier to score. I would like the 3pt line moved way back to 26+ feet. I only want to see players who grew up as scorers/shooters attempting 3s. There are a lot of good basketball players phased out the NBA solely because of their inability to shoot from 3. Plus it would make the game interesting seeing how teams would adjust. @@jorgenorberto293

Ain’t no cappin with Sheed always facts.
    1. You can’t play defense in the NBA. The European game has become more physical then the NBA. Euro ball is more physical because the referees allow physical defense in Europe.
    2. The NBA referees think they are famous. This group has a history of corruption and they influence games in favor of certain players. Like Scott Foster vs Chris Paul.
    3. The Euro step made traveling common. It was once a one step allowance, then one step and a gather now it seems like two steps and a gather (3 total steps) is never called travel.

Not only the Euro step leading to extra steps being okay, but also, players shuffle feet and palm the ball on crossovers more than ever.
Whenever kids say the NBA is way more athletic, I always say that it's easy to show athleticism when the game is a track meet, and you can run more freely.
How would Tim Hardaway's handle look today? Isiah Thomas? How much more athletic and dominant would prime Shawn Kemp be if he could take 4 steps without dribbling?

I’m 💯sure if the all/superstars of the 90s and early 2000s could play in an era where they are not being touched and there’s an easy path to score we wouldn’t be talking bout this. In an era so soft where the standard is being lowered to make the playoffs theres a play-in tournament, traveling is barely called anymore. And high percentage shots became a virus in favor or jacking up threes. This is better?Really? Ok kids Sorry you weren’t around To have seen real competitive basketball, cause this ain’t it. Defense started becoming an afterthought when hand checking was made illegal over twenty years ago. There are better long distance shooters in the league now then back in the 90s. There weren’t many 7 footers launching threes back in the 90s Sheed did it and so did Arvydas Sabonis. It is way more common to see stretch 4s or centers shooting three pointers nowadays.

All of these have huge impacts. That said, the rule changes took awhile for the full impact to be felt.
We're overdue for some major rules adjustments, but Adam Silver has no spine and he also knows that these kids don't care about defense or rules.

Whenever people say this era is more skilled, the only thing they point out is that more bigs shoot 3's.
That's true, but they also don't protect the rim or rebound as much.
Also, some of those old dudes would stretch their range out a few more feet. Robinson, Ewing, Hakeem, Karl Malone and many more had that potential and could shoot well from 18 feet.
In this era, I'm sure they'd stretch that to 22 feet. Not all of those dudes would've been able, but a lot would've.
Just look at dudes like Blake Griffin, Al Horford, Demarcus Cousins, AD, etc in today's era.
None shot 3's early in their careers, then they just started making them.

    • @jacobsworld9253

@NewKasuto Jordan actually played in the easiest era. It wasn't easier to score inside but if you were quick, had some type of handle and could create your own shot, the only defense for that was illegal back then. Jordan got to work 1 on 1 as the best 1 on 1 player in league. If he made you bite on a fake, it was over. Compare how much open space Jordan had to operate in to the kind of defense the 2007 Spurs threw at LeBron in the finals. Jordan himself said he doesn't know how his career would've ended up if zones were legal throughout his career. Also Jordan being a part of an era that couldn't shoot made defenders back then look better than they would look today because you always knew no one could shoot like that and to play the drive and kick. Players now will pick you apart, fake the drive, step back 3, have you looking lost!

How often can players stand at the top of the key, break someone down, and then go to a wide-open lane for a layup or kick it out to a man with no one contesting him? Players only look more skilled because there's no one opposing them. Fundamentals are being overlooked and players who rely on shooting 3-pointers exclusively are becoming more common. The elephant in the room is once Kobe retired the NBA started to deteriorate with Lebron as the face of the league but no one will admit it.
Magic vs Bird laid the foundation for basketball being on tv and players making more money as the games popularity grew.
MJ and Kobe made the game a global phenomenon opening up global markets for marketing players as stars overseas, sneaker culture, players getting more money and the global spread of the game, amongst other things.
Name me Lebron’s contribution in furthering the game other than piggybacking on what the aforementioned four have already done?
I can tell you how he’s diminished the game as the leader and superstar of the NBA.
    1. Disparaging MJ and Kobe while pursuing his narcissistic push to be called the goat.
    2. Flopping and whining about fouls- he’s 6’9” and 260 but spends more time on the floor than the ball boy wiping up sweat.
    3. Team hopping- teaming with other superstar caliber players in his prime chasing rings. Other superstar players are his only true competitors so teaming up with them wreaks of “I can’t compete”.
    4. Player stacking- same as above
    5. Load management- feels no responsibility to the fans or the game and sets a bad example to other players.
    6. Claiming that losing 6 Finals out of 10 is a metric for greatness more so than winning 6 Finals.
    7. Dishonoring Laker Nation by hanging that in-season banner in defiance of Kobe and other Laker greats before him.
I could add more but you get the picture.
Magic, Bird, MJ and Kobe felt a responsibility to the fans and the legacy of the game. They epitomized winning, excellence, leadership and playing the game the “right way”.
Lebron’s legacy, on the other hand, is normalizing mediocrity, self aggrandizement, taking shortcuts and exemplifying poor leadership, all at the expense of the game.

I grew up on 80s/90s/early 2000s ball, it's when I developed a love for it. But ain't no way in the world players then were more skilled than now. Football players like Mahorn, Xavier McDaniel had 1 or 2 things they did well. Guys today do 3/4+ things. Are there too many 3s for my taste, absolutely. I want more dunks and mid-range scoring, but overall the game is extremely more entertaining than then. Lot of y'all capping cause it's Sheed saying it.
Sheed the same person that said KD is the best player in the league. KD has played with multiple All-NBA caliber/HOF players the past 3 seasons and come up short. Also, what does KD do better than Jokic, who is far more SKILLED than him? Maybe just score? Add Bron, Giannis, and Steph to that list too.
The best player in the world gets embarrassed on a regular basis in the playoffs?? C'mon now.

Everybody look good when you have the freedom of playing offense against defenses that can't put their hands on you. Too many gray area fouls and floppers that makes watching games such a frustrating experience.

I agree with the overall skill level being higher, but overall, basketball iq is lower ,the defense is handicapped , you get to carry/discontinue and travel all over the place. I don't want to see people getting clotheslined anymore, but they did make it easier for this Era to score. Offensive players can initiate contact and get bailed out. No sets either 5 out, high or Spain pick and roll and dude's chucking up three's that have no business shooting that many in my humble opinion

Growing up my favorite part of sports in general was the willingness to win or die, it felt like athletes understood the opportunity they had playing sports for a living, and tried to give the fans a show. NFL still has that feel, but its slipping, MLB is just not fast enough, but the NBA has become such a pampered league it's embarrassing, and it starts at the top with lebron. Growing up athletes who didn't hustle were lambasted by sports media at every turn, if you didn't play defense you would be on the bench. Nowadays all you do is score 30 and the media bends over backwards to celebrate you, stack your team to win, but when you lose claim it's unfair you had to play a better team, and the flopping and entire teams whining for calls most plays, everyone jacking 3 pointers, and maybe 4 teams running real offensive and defensive sets. Its sad.

    • @IsaacMSingleton1

Or for example giannis, who wants to claim losing isn't a failure. Imagine if MJ, LeBron, or Kobe said that, but since giannis is likeable, everyone pretends it made sense. His 15 years in the NBA are a lot different than normal people's 60 years in a career

They made it illegal to block jump shots. I’m not that impressed by professional basketball players making uncontested threes, while the defender stands four feet away scared to leave his feet or go near them. Landing space ruined the game. Also the driving in the lane calls are absurd.

This game nowadays are about specialists. Shooters, shot blockers, etc. Thats y someone like Mason Plumlee is in the league. Also, if you can’t shoot the 3 they don’t want you in the league. That’s y guys who should definitely be in the league like Tyreke Evans, Gerald Green, Dwight Howard, and John Wall aren’t in the league. These dudes got a ton of game left, and aren’t on rosters. There are straight scrubs at the end of some of these benches. Those vets I listed could also help a lot of these young guys in the locker room.
