I happened upon this channel by chance. The story of fanny brice and Barbara striesand was the first thing I watched. I have now become a major fan. Keep up the good work. 😁
This makes me appreciate the Tony's a lot more, but I agree that they can't just ignore the realities of the world and the problems in theatre right now.
I lost track of when I first discovered the Tonys but have been addicted since. The first year that Neil Patrick Harris hosted, I was away and for some reason did not set my VCR, but I found it on RUclips and found it to be the gayest Tonys ever. This awards show is better than Christmas. Thank you for giving us the background on my favourite awards show.

I will be 40 this year and have been watching the Tonys since the mid-1990s. I loved watching Broadway performances on Rosie's show back then. Bravo to Rosie for exposing more people to Broadway! 👏

Too little, too late - from 1960 to 1995, 35 years, I lived within walking distance of Broadway, at 52nd Street and 2nd Ave. I attenderd live performances on average 52 times a year, Broadway certainly, but free theatre in Central Park, (the Joseph Papp) Public Theatre, and a variety of Off- and off-off broadway, from the Manhattan Thetre Club, the Roundabout, the Phoenix, the Cocteau, and various others (Sullivan St. Playhouse, Negro Ensemble, and anywhere Jason Robards, George C. Scott, or other NYC favorites would appear) whenever they performed. And when I finally, in 1995, left NYC, I left it for new "Broadway --- way way way off off off Broaeway, --- in San Miguel Allende Mexico BECAUSE (among other reason) I found a new place to live where English language THEATRE was performed so often by profestional actors on a schedule of about 40 separate theatrical stagings a year, every year, between 1995 and approximately 2015 (when I just could no locomote myself TO a newest opening (the performances continued thereafter, without me, though). That was 1960 to 2015, 55 years of theatre. WHAT A RUN. I can only tell you how thankful I was , still am, for what I discovered in Manhattan and what YOU ALL HAVE STILL AVAILABLE TO DO NOW.

Does Canada have an equivalent to the Tonys?
Not exactly. I imagine different cities like Vancouver, Calgary, or Halifax may have awards to recognize work in their respective professional communities. In Toronto, we have the Dora Mavor Moore Awards. We just call them the Dora's. It generally awards regional stuff but sometimes commercial shows are considered in the same categories along smaller regional shows. I wouldn't say the stakes for the Dora's are the same as the Tony's ;-)

Can someone explain who the people are shown in the frame at 20:35? I recognise Cameron Macintosh, but not the others and I don’t understand why any of them are problematic, other than Macintosh becoming a dirty Tory and filthy Brexiteer.
Scott Rudin (top middle) is a producer who is allegedly abusive and hostile to casts/employees/ etc. Laura Osnes (top right) has won several TONYs but lost roles recently for her refusal to be vaccinated. Alice Ripley (bottom left) is also a TONY winner and has recently been accused of grooming and inappropriate relationships with a number of teen girls.
Macintosh also went to bat for Pryce in Yellow Face, refusing to recast him. He (not Cameron) talks about it in another video.
