- On March 23, 2007, Tubby Smith was officially announced as the new University of Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball head coach, and here is what he had to say. Sorry about the poor camera work, i need to get a tripod, and there isnt much i could do about the audio.
Tubby Smith was a great coach and even better man. He was great for our progam.. great passion..his assistants runined him!! They were awful and did nothing from a recruiting standpoint besides tht one year when they got rondo and company.. they hardly said anything on the sidelines during the game.. Tubby was just TOO loyal of a person to fire them..He has ahad much recent success at Minnesota because he finnally got rid of them...does anyone even know where those assitants are now?? exactly
yea, tubby sure could build Final 4 teams with all his resources at UK, but at minnesota he has a better chance of getting recruits.

yeah, i mean Minn will compete for sweet 16's and elite 8's on a yearly basis.
@Wardrip06 Yeah, UK really misses those 12 losses a season and losing to every ranked team in America. UK really misses the days of when they were not ranked. Hows Minn doing? Yeah, terrible with no future, no recruits and just hoping to make the tourny. His departure was UK's best day in 15 yrs.

Every head coach in America goes on the road and recruits, Tubby failed as a recruiter because his offense was boring, slow paced and he got worse every year. Where are his assts now? In the NBA. Where is Tubby now? He's in Minne failing miserably. He prays just to make the NCAA tourny....even the Minn fans are getting frustrated. Its a shame he didnt leave 7 yrs ago.
@jellybeanfreek44 Tubbys looking at his 4th year and still nothing has changed. 12 losses a year and the slowest, most boring offense in the country. Minn just hopes to make the tourny and if they make it to the 2nd round, he'll throw a party.
u say give gillispie time to build a program but then u say shit about minnesota why dont u give tubby a couple years then lets see wut happens?

Yeah but they were stinking and leaving for NBA. I liked Tubby but I wish he recruited better.
