    The Atari RCA out is not the composite video (typically, yellow) that you'd think it is. It's actually an RF modulated signal. I have a 4k TV that, with the "F" coax to RCA adapter, will show the Atari when it's on analog TV channel 3. The key is to make sure it's on analog and not digital TV.

      Thanks Joe and TheRazZPlay - The analog setting is the key! I didn't need a VCR or the converter box, just the Coax adapter plugged directly into the back of my TV, which was $6 shipped on Amazon Prime. Now if I can just figure out how to get the console into 2 Player mode. :D Thanks again.

      Hello there. I just unpacked an Atari 2600 but don't have the upscaler. Tried to talk to Radio Shack and a Pawn shop... but we are talking about kids who aren't into the old gaming systems. One guy said he could try to get it to work... even though I tried to explain it will not work, he said he could do it. He said the resolution wouldn't be the same. So... asked him to watch your video, and he said.. and I quote ... "Yeaaahhhh, I don't know what that is. But if you bring it in, I can try to get it to hook up or else look on Amazon." LOL So, where can I find that upscaler? I can't read the name upside down.

    This was way more complicated than mine. Also, it looks different. Mine has 6 switches on the front. All I had was the old RF cable connection. I have a 1080p screen, but with an RF in for terrestrial analogue aerial. This is the same cable that we get HD Freeview here in the UK. All I had to do was do an auto channel scan on the TV but deselect digital TV channels in the scan options so it would only look for an analogue signal. Failing that, i was going to connect to an old VHS VCR, again using the old RF connection and then VCR to TV via scart. Still, on the TV's we have here, RCA inputs are still usable connections. You can do the yellow, red/white (video, audio L/R) but you can get a valid video HD signal but using 3 for just the video, RGB/3xColour difference cables. It was great to get it working again.

  • @lemonherb1
    @lemonherb1 4 года назад +3

    Dispite the fact that the fact the Atari 2600 uses and RCA cable for it’s output, it’s an RF signal, not Composite.
    Using the RCA to Coax adapter, you should be able to plug it into any TV that has an analog tuner and turn to channel 3 and it will work.
    That being said, I doubt 4K TV’s will have an analog tuner, as analog broadcasts were discontinued several years ago.
    A VCR does not upscale the RF signal, but it does convert it to a Composite signal so you can connect it to any TV that has Composite inputs

    I need help! I hooked everything up through a Zenith VCR/DVD combo per your video. Here's the issue - I can't find a channel 2/3 switch or designation on this VCR. The VCR can also take the Atari's coaxial cable without a converter...but I'm not sure if the female coax on the vcr is input or output. That area is marked "DVD Exclusive Out". Any thoughts? If that's an output coax then I'm not sure this VCR will work. Maybe it's too new? Thank you

    • @TheRazZPlay
      @TheRazZPlay  2 года назад

      The VCR/DVD combo may not work unfortunately. If you have a remote for it and it can set it to channel 3 then you might be good to go. The coax should most likely be an input...it should indicate whether it is or not right around the port :D The Atari doesn't have a coax male at the end of it's cable. It's an RCA male. You'll need an RCA female to coax male adapter.

    Why are you using the VCR with the upscaler?..is it because your hdtv doesn't have the coax connection?? I tried hooking up my 4 switch Atari to my lcd hdtv directly into my tv's coax and I can see it powers on but no picture..just scrambled. I am just curious on when you need the VCR and when you need the upscaler??? or if both are nedded.

    • @TheRazZPlay
      @TheRazZPlay  Год назад +1

      Alright so here's how it works. We need to go from the single rca, all the way to the hdmi upscaler. I've yet to find anything that can go from coax to rca, or coax to hdmi. Best I've found so far is a vcr, which gives the rca out. That makes it possible to go from the single rca, to the coax (female rca to male coax adapter), to the three rca and then to the hdmi through the upscaler. So yes, everything in the video is needed until someone invents a better (and less bulky) solution that also won't break the bank 😀😀

      In the last decade someone gave me a 4 switch Atari2600. So I am kinda new to this hookup coompat thing. (My og heavy six is long gone). But I've seen people go directly into the hdtv coax port from the Atari with just the femal rca to male coax adapter and have success. That threw me off. I guese maybe some certain lcd's can do it..I don't know. Mine could not.
      Anyway I have everything except the upscaler. I'll get one and mess with it again at some point. Funny because I own many devices with Atari emulators that play every game very well...but there is no better way imo than popping in carts and grabbing that classic Atari controller. The adapter on the Atari to convert to coax and connected to "RF IN" on the back of the DVD/VCR, Channel set to 3, RCA - Red/White/Yellow coming out of the "DVD/VCR Common Out" and into the video converter (I could not find an exact match to yours - I got this: www.ebay.com/itm/HDMI-to-3RCA-AV-CVBS-Composite-S-Video-R-L-Audio-Converter-Adapter-US-Stock/383759216655?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 I hope this version operates the same.) Settings on the video converter are "CVBS (that's the R/W/Y connection name) and "NTSC' (as opposed to PAL) and then connected through the HDMI cable to the 4K TV.
    Nothing happens. :( The TV does not "see" HDMI connected (it's greyed out when there is no connection). I am a technician, so I know there are a dozen possibilities to troubleshoot (broken cable - whatnot), but since you have way more background than me figuring this out, can you offer some suggestions, please? Did I do something wrong?
