She gave him the cold hard truth. Once he wound up in Japan, what he thought was his now became theirs. Or territory wise, Toranaga owned his ship, weapons, crew, and to a degree. Even John himself.

Did the book portray Mariko as a total b*tch, or are they just going for historical realism?
Mariko comes off as friendly, warm, nice, kind, gentle, considerate, understanding, graceful in both the novel and original series.
She did have negative feelings and thoughts about Blackthorne, but she mostly kept them hidden from him.
In the novel, she's even conflicted. She had positive thoughts and feelings along with negative thoughts and feelings which did include a sexual feelings for him.
She saw both very good and very bad qualities.
She started viewing him mainly positive after his attempted suicide when he was displeased with Yabu's decree of killing the villagers if he didn't learn a good amount of Japanese in 6 months.
She mentioned of his having a rebirth in both novel and original series.
Mariko had a tear coming from her left eye when he was about to commit suicide in the original series.
Mariko was depicted as being a bit worried about his decision to commit suicide in the novel.
The hint of a romance was planted early.
They had a full blown love affair in both the novel and original series and that included even declarations of their love for one another.
I very recently watched the original series and then watched the new series. I read the novel afterwards.
I enjoyed the original series a lot more than the new series.
