Theda Bara ~Authentic Makeup Tutorial

To start off my October tutorials, I decided to go with a look inspired by the original Vamp, Theda Bara. To get the look as accurate as possible I used a 1917 magazine cover as my inspiration. I always prefer to use magazine illustrations, since they give a much better insight into what makeup shades were actually being used. I know it doesn't look "quite right" in colour, hence why I've added some black and white clips at the end to show how much that changes the look. (I feel I should also note that Theda Bara would have worn a lot more makeup in films than I applied here, especially when it came to "foundation". Early stars had to apply a heavy grease-paint all over their faces to make it look "normal" to the blue-sensitive early film types. It's always fun to play "spot the naked hands" when watching silent films. When someone has very tanned or dirty looking hands compared to their face, its because they applied greasepaint to their face but not to their hands!)

Great tutorial! If I may offer some advice- try not too apply to much pressure with the brush to the eyelids. The friction from the pressure over time will lead to ‘crepe-y’ eyelids, and eye shadow will blend much easier and more effortlessly! To help establish this habit, try holding the brush lower down on the handle with a soft grip, and flick with your wrist, allowing the ends of the brush hairs to do the work. Good job! Keep it up!!

Back in the day like the 1910s and 1920s makeup was in its rawest form and the powder and pan foundation would have looked more cakey

Yes, it was certainly an age of extremes when it came to makeup. You had either the simple barely-there powders or the super thick, heavy stage/film makeup. Foundation has certainly come a long way!
