Growing up listening to mainly HK music (the 70's and 80's was a lot of borrowing Japanese pop songs), after returning from some time in Canada, the first mainland China singer that really got me into modern Chinese music is 朴树 (Pu Shu) 的 生如夏花.
HK has a lot adapt from Japan, korea even Thai song(失戀陣線聯盟 from The Grasshopper, the original song is Ku Gad)....They have originals, but not that much and HK singers a lot also just singers and not write their own songs. Mainland singer actually has quite some original singer even the old ones, but they are not as famous because they are more of singing in pub/bar or stage and lack of media exposure unlike HK which being package into a star. Older singer there are Dou Wei, Liang Long(from 二手玫瑰 band) , Tang Dynasty band, Zhang Chu, Cui Jian, Wang Feng, Zheng Jun, Li Jian, Han Hong and more... Edit: Rock is quite huge in China back in the day..hahaha
I adore Wang Feng's music in particular. A bit more mainstream rock, but he conveys all the experiences in life fantastically. Some of my favorites from him are 《北京，北京》(Beijing Beijing), 《怒放的生命》(Blooming Life), and 《笑着哭》(Laughing while Crying).
I'm from Arunachal Pradesh NE india and i have many fav chinese songs ex song from journey to the west movie, songs from singers like yihuik, tong li, lei ting, mikkaan( don't really no if she is from Mongolia or inner Mongolia), Lexie liu, i have seen song by su xingjie and so on.♥️♥️♥️
I think...I just found the names of a few songs I like through this video. Their singing and pronunciation is amazing too! Many thanks to this video for helping me find songs and a new channel to watch lol :p

Old Chinese songs: any song from Terasa Teng. She was a legend. For newer songs, I like Jay Chou's songs.

不染, Mao Buyi's version; any of Huang Xiaoyun's OST covers; and lately I've been really enjoying Su Yunying's 時候.

My favorite Chinese singer now is 唐艺 TangYi because she sings so many memorable Chinese songs.
