To see a little bit about how their brains work, watch the "100 songs in 10 minutes" challenge that they did for the REACT channel. It's amazing how they can just instantly harmonize with each other, even on songs that aren't necessarily in their repertoire.
To hear them all together in 5 part harmonies try Run to You, or My Heart with You
Next try PTX. “. My Heart with you”. It’s a five part harmony that is out of this world. Watch them close their eyes to really listen to one another. It’s live and it’s hauntingly beautiful

They did have prompts while they recorded this on the road. They can do it live without the prompt. Check out the Popspring performance. To hear them all singing at once, check out Dreams.
This one wasn't as produced as the 90's Dance Medly.
As others have suggested, the Popspring performance is great.
The behind the scenes video of the recording of the "Evergreen" album gives some insight to their process. Also, how quickly they come together. They are true professionals at their craft.

I so sorry you were sick. Glad you are feeling better. Stomach flu is NASTY! I hope PTX helps you to feel better. They also have done this on tour. If you like 5 part harmony check out their cover of "My Heart With You". They did this on tour during Christmas last year. Beautiful. Then after that check out their original "Run to You", which was inspired by "My Heart With You".
I’ve heard them saying that the Evolution of Music took a long time to arrange, because it was one of the first one they did. After a while they became more efficient at it.
Somewhere in your PTX journey, you will want to watch and react to their performances on the Sing Off (season 3). They show little glimpses of the group working on/arranging songs. There are 12 performances during the competition and a few more afterwards. They formed right before auditioning for the show. While this gives an early glimpse, you can also watch the behind the scenes of recording Evergreen, their 2021 Christmas album. This gives more of a glimpse of their current recording process.
I vote for POPSPRING 2016 too! Just under 15 minutes.. all originals except this same Michael Jackson medley.. Its incredible! 😃

I highly recommend their POPSPRING 2016 show. they did four songs from their collection including a live rendition of their Micheal Jackson medley. it's very impressive.
Glad you are feeling better. Ok, information. Pentatonix uses an "organic style" to produce their music. Since they are so involved it, by the time they finish making it, they are ready. I am sure they practice it some. They are known for a 3 take method. They do the song, and someone says "what if I did this here" and they do it again. Then they take the best of the 3. I don't think they have a prompt for the song, but their more active videos they have a guy showing what the next movements are. Thanks for a great reaction! Oh, I am down for Love Again next! 😁😁😎
So glad you're feeling better! I don't know if they had prompts for this, but they perform it live at least as well, or better, than they performed it here, so they aren't using them anymore. I think Scott once said that by the time they figure out all the transitions for these evolutions together, they pretty much know it cold. The sheer amount of time they have sung together certainly pays off in how they balance their voices. They know how to complement one another and also how to make room for one another to cut through at the right moments. It's such a lovely synergy.

For most of the Evolutions and Medleys i believe they do 4 takes and then choose the best one out of that. If you want to hear more of their 5 part harmonies, Run To You, Cant Help Falling in Love, Dreams, Mad World, My Heart With You, are all good options
You look great! No apology needed! I would think that it is just pure practice. I have watched this video a number of times and know exactly what is coming next. This is the case with all of their evolution videos, so I think they arrange it and then practice the crap out of it. It's amazing how they know just the right lead singer to pick in any song! This was a great tribute to M.J. and so glad they were the ones to do it. You should check out "Run to You" and anything from their newest album which has a lot of original stuff by PTX. It is awesome. Also, I know it's not Christmas time BUT, they really have some AMAZING songs on their Christmas albums that aren't necessarily Christmas songs like " My favorite Things" , "Thank You", "Joyful, Joyful", my fave, "Carol of the Bells" was so EPIC. I could just go on and on.

You've watched enough PTX at this point to go back and watch where it all started, on the 3rd season of Sing Off in 2011. Their first performance on the show was only the second time they had sung together in front of an audience (the first was their audition for the show). Avi and Kevin had just joined the trio of Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch, who sang together in high school after meeting in musical theater performances as youngsters. You won't regret it, and we pentaholics will come along for the ride. Avi had planned a career in opera, Kevin was heading to med school, Kirstie and Scott were freshmen in college, just starting out, and Mitch skipped high school graduation to try-out for the show. Everyone's plans changed, and the rest, well, just watch! Find the videos of their performances with the judges comments and enjoy!
And to add to this, after they won the Sing Off, Sony promptly dropped their promised record contract because acapella was not marketable. So PTX just started taking to RUclips, mostly sitting on a couch and recording their music. The rest, as they say, is history!
Glad, you're feeling better 😊 I love all medleys of them incl. the Superfruit ones. As already written, My Heart With You with Matt and Run To You with Avi, are great suggestions for their five part harmonies.
This is my favorite evolution medley from them.
They kind of memorize the evolutions as one song so its not like they have to remember what song is next as opposed to the next line in the song. They did one of those 100 songs in 100 minutes things and at least one or two of them you can tell they are ready to go to the next line in the evolution.
As a singer, it's memory. By the time you perfect it, you just know it. It's second nature. To get it to this level of arrangement, they are very well-rehearsed and just know it. It's hard to describe it. But once you know it, you know it..
Glad you are on the mend! Hope you are to 100% soon. I always find, with their videos, that I want to watch them 5 times in a row - trying to pay attention to each person separately just so I can appreciate everything that's going on. I enjoy watching you discover music.
Nice reaction and good song to choose after your illness. They do 3-5 takes of these videos then choose the best. They do this in concert...you can search Popspring 2016 concert to see it.
I would choose Love Again as your next it's an original and very techno.
Glad you’re feeling betterish! Obviously they practice the parts before recording, but what I’ve reading is they do 3-4 takes of a medley and then pick the best one to publish.
I read an interview with an early video production company. They said PTX came in ready to perform, and usually only needed 2 or 3 video takes to get everything right. An extra take may capture a "how about this instead" to see which worked better for the song and video.
I would say no prompt. I've heard them say numerous times that medleys are the hardest to arrange, and takes months. This one in particular.
Think just lots and lots of practice. They do this live in tye popspring show.

Glad you are feeling better. I've heard it takes them several sessions to work out these "Evolution of..." arrangements so I would think by the time they get it done they have it mostly memorized. Most performing musicians develop an advanced ability to memorize music.
Their sound technician says they run through it 2 or 3 times then do the final take

I squeaked when you paused it just before Mitch first sang then you said "I am not ready for what he is about to do"...LOL...and that was just the start.....but are we ever really ready for what Mitch is about to do? You have a treat in store as you have about 195 more songs to cover! All five of them blew this one out of the park....individually and collectively……of course...we don't expect anything less of PTX. They also did this live at Popspring 2016 - you should react to each song from that performance. I already sent you a long list of recommendations yesterday so now adding also "Cheerleader" "Evolution of Rhianna" Evolution of Ariana Grande" "Run to You" "Dreams". More PTX please!

I think everyone is correct that they aren't using prompts for these... BUT it's not a bad question. Mitch and Scott had a sideproject they did as a duo and they *did* use prompts for Superfruit medleys. PTX also have teleprompters on tour (Scott is especially notorious for forgetting lyrics) so saying they do it live isn't proof of anything. Scott told Matt a story on an episode of PTXperience of a concert where the prompter he and Mitch were using went down for 3 songs and he was freaking out because he didn't have the words to the next song memorized. On the flipside, there's a phone video of them doing the Evolution of Beyoncé in the hall of a radio or TV station and that was obviously completely memorized... I think they probably have the medleys down better than most songs just because of the time and effort involved in the arrangement.
Everyone's saying Run To You and My Heart With You for five part harmony, but they do have a handful more beyond those two. Elvis' Can't Help Falling In Love is another. The Cranberries' Dreams is one that has no beatboxing but there are parts with harmony and parts with more vocal stacking... I love Matt's bass in that one.
One with each other is a good way to put it. Check their origins on the sing off. You are looking good. You can see their process on the Evergreen set. They do four takes and pick the best one. That's how good they are. Their individual music knowledge is phenomenal.

This particular vid they recorded whilst touring in Japan!! They had been working on the arrangement for about six months and grabbed a few hours on one of their few days off, ran it 3 or 4 times and picked the best one...they are astonishing

There are some behind the scenes videos (the Prayer and New Rules x Are You That Somebody) and The Making of Evergreen (most recent Christmas album) BUT only if you don’t mind skipping around between old and new stuff. Sing Off videos are great too.
I don't know about prompts but if you look at Kirstie she frequently checks her right hand as if she has cues there
Beat It was one of my absolute favorites! I wish they had included "Rockin Robin" from the Jackson 5 in this. If you ever react to "Beat It," definitely do the music video.

You'd probably enjoy them doing the 100 songs in 10 minutes challenge. It's much more informal and funny, and shows off their dynamics a bit more, how they play off each other...

Obviously they learn their parts on their own, but then I’ve read that they do 3-4 takes and pick their favorite. However, that information is based on what I’ve read in other people’s comments, so big disclaimer there…
The video I believe they're speaking of is a Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix. There is also a video of the Making of the Evergreen album that gives you a look into what goes on in making that album. Take care of yourself, you still don't look a 100%. Take care of yourself first, we'll be here.

I don't have a link for it, but there is a YT video with an interview of a couple of their recording engineers. Basically they come in and do about 4 takes for this type of video, and pick out the one that they think is the best. According to the engineers, any of the takes could probably be used, since they are all prepared when they come in - it's just a matter of some usually small details that make them choose one take over another.
For a sample of their 5 part harmony, I suggest Mad World. There's no vocal percussion in that one at all, so Kevin is able to join in the singing for the whole song. He doesn't do any of the solo work, so it's a little hard to pick his voice out, but everyone else does some solo work, and it's a beautiful version of the song.

They always know when to "get out of each other's way." I have heard they do about 3 takes on these Evolution videos. About how they do things: there's an excellent mini-documentary, Recording of Evergreen, which shows them doing intensive studio work for their most recent album. You will get an idea of how they create their arrangements (and you will see them working with long-time collaborator, arranger, and recording engineer Ben Bram), how they change things on the fly when they get a moment of inspiration, and how they work with each other. ruclips.net/video/M60SKKkQLqo/видео.html -- HOWEVER, you might want to wait until you've reacted to some of the videos from the album: The Prayer, I Saw Three Ships (various live recordings from the 2021 holiday season), and I Just Called To Say I Love You.

No apologies needed, just glad you're better😃. You should check out their performances on the Sing Off, with the judges comments. Just to see how much they've grown. The fact that all five didn't meet up until the day before the audition will really make you appreciate their talents even more than you already do. Lol they were babies back then😅. The three were 19 and Avi and Kevin were like 22 or 23. They were obviously meant to be😉 Maybe not for reactions videos just enjoyment and observing their determination esp when most of the other groups/choirs had several more people in them. They do 4 takes and then pick the best when they've done the Evolution videos. Looking forward to more PTX reactions. Don't know if you've already done reaction to their original songs Love Me When I Don't, Be My Eyes, or their cover of Shallow. Kevin has Beyonce(his cello😂) in it.
