  • A dive into the remote bighorn crags of idaho. A long 50 mile forest service road drive where the last 10 miles were a steep uphill and even caused my coolant gauge to move a bit on my truck. Despite it being 4th of July weekend it was very lonely and we had both nights/lakes all to ourselves.

    Awesome geology...thanks for sharing.So funny ..whatever the background noise is on the video it sounds like the invasion of the periodic cicadas we just experienced here in NC.

    23:20! Gorgeous. If I won the Facebook/Pfizer lottery, I'd annex and then buy a place right there.

    I had first in at the Crags this year! Made it to the CG June 14th had to clear 9 trees on the road to get there. Didn't make it to ship island lake because of the snow. Only as far as wilson Lake was accessible.

      I honestly loved the higher lakes (birdbill / wilson ) better than ship island. Ship Island was cool, but very brushy and limits sunset / evening views with all the trees. Still a phenomenal place

    Nice video, I've hiked this same trail and one lake further. Best Fishing trip I've ever been on
    I was 8 years old on my first time hiking in 1965. I was with some explorer scouts. Three of us slid down that Glacier slide, I almost couldn't stop before hitting the rocks, I was able to stomp my heels into the snow and stop a few feet from the bottom rocks.

    Last hike in I had a large plastic Tube Tent. Basically a huge trash sack with open ends. Put your sleeping bag in, throw a rope down the center, lift up the rope approximately 3 feet and tie between two trees. Cheap and adequate, it did snow on us one night in early August.

    Excellent! I've been wondering what the Bighorn Crags look like. Its been on my list for years. Keep hesitanting because of how far and on Google Earth the trailhead looks extremely busy. Best video I've seen of the area. Thanks for sharing. Hike on!

    Everyone looks at the maps and thinks that they can daytrip it quickly to Ship Island Lake. Just the drive to the trailhead and the hike itself to Birdbill Lake, usually changes your mind.

      Yes, the dirt road from Salmon to the Trailhead even in a Colorado with ATs took almost 2 hours one way

    • @MtHockey
      @MtHockey Год назад

      @@NorthwestWanderer If you did it in 2 hours you made good time. I have done this hike 2 times, and it took us every bit of 3 hours from Salmon to the trailhead. The last trip I made to the Crags was last September, and there was a big windstorm while we were in the backcountry. I forgot to bring a chainsaw, and the road was full of downed timber when we came out. Luckily it was elk season and there were road hunters in there with saws to clear the way for us. I would like to go next time via the Salmon River Rd out of North Fork ID and go up the Panther Crk Rd (if you are coming from Missoula). They say that is a lot longer than over the Williams Lake Rd out of Salmon, but I would like to try it. Parking your rig at the bottom and packing your gear up to the trailhead on a 4-wheeler would also be a fun way to get there, and a lot easier on your truck! Nice video!

    This one has been on my list for a while. Would almost be the same route, though I assume it is the main way to Ship Island Lake. Crazy Beautiful! On the gear problems, I can tell you what is the best tent right now... it's not a tent at all, it's a hammock!

    Andrew, I've got the Nemo Losi 3p tent from a few years ago that has been fantastic. My wife and I split the weight. Seems the newer Nemo tents have all the issues from what I've see online from users. I have the exact same Platypus filter system and it works like a champ. I can offer a bit of advice when you start to filter your water. If it starts to filter super slow, take your clean water bag with the hose in it, and lift it up higher than your filter and your dirty water bag. Hold it like that until you see bubbles entering back into your dirty water bag. If you don't see any bubbles, make sure the inline filter and the clean water bag is higher than where the hose goes back into the dirty water bag. I initially had slower filtering when I tested my system here at home. That's when I looked back at the instructions that came with the system, and it suggested doing just what I explained. Never had the problem again. But, I do perform that technique anyways every time I use the system.

    I've been wanting to explore the Big Horn Crags for years now. New maps out by Trails Illustrated 1:126,000 and the National Forest map 1:100,000. Other than those two there are literally no maps of the area. Mitchell Geography and MyTopo might have some as well. One day I will get up there considering we live in SW Idaho. When the kids get older I plan on making this a long backpack trip.

    Surprised to hear you say that about REI. I've had nothing but good things to say about them over 3 decades (and I use my stuff). Not surprised about the NEMO tent situation. As you, I forget what model it was, maybe Hornet or Dragonfly, but it was sewn incorrectly or something. I took it back to REI, we tried again to set it up to no avail. Took two more brand new ones of the same model out of inventory....same issue.
    Still have a Sierra Design Meteor Lite that that is approaching 30 years old and still solid. Funny how things have changed. It was marketed then as one of the lightest 2 person backpacking tents back then and has legit 2 person demensions. I weighted it the other day...6.5 lbs.
    I have no personal experience but I here good things about Half Moon Design as far as reasonably price lite tents.
    Glad to hear your thoughts about Osprey. I have my eye the Ariel 65 when they have a sale.
    Thanks for your efforts and enjoy your channel. Also had my eye on that REI tent that Aaron has..the blue one.

      yeah not impressed with the NEMO. Unfortunatley with how pricey things are these days I can't go and grab anything else, I gotta make this last and work. Yeah older tents were heavy but absolute tanks. Used to backpack with a Eureka A Frame that weighed close to 10 lbs, that thing was bomb proof.

    Gear welcome to hell. Trying to find something that works for you as an individual is tough. You and Joey eat gear alive. My Nemo Dragonfly had something like 75 days of backpacking in a couple years no problems. My Big Agnes Rattlesnake (discontinued) been there and back and it didn't even put a tear in it. Platypus lasted me one season years ago and after that it never worked right. Sometimes it would flow sometimes it wouldn't. Go figure that gravity was that fickle. My old Pur water filter (Katadyn now) is over 20 years old and will still pump a liter a minute. The only answer to what is best is a lot of money spent and hopefully very little frustration on discovering what works for you.

    • @NorthwestWanderer
      @NorthwestWanderer  Год назад

      Yeah its a shame how pricey everything is these days. Backflushing on the platypus filters help a lot, just a shame that a brand new one is a lemon. Never had good luck with hand pump filters, I'd always somehow blow gaskets or get mugged by bugs while trying to filter haha

    Being from Sandpoint ID, I've only heard of this area. I've been through Challis on my way to Stanley. It is a trek in itself just to get to Crags camp. So remote. Thanks for the indepth input and nice video. It must be a small window of time in the year to visit because of elevation and lingering snow cover.

    • @NorthwestWanderer
      @NorthwestWanderer  Год назад

      It is quite a trek indeed. The road wasn't as "rocky/rough" as people said it was but it is STEEP; 13-15%, maybe even steeper, grades and long which probably contributed to my coolant Temp gauge moving.
