What I noticed with the authentic vase with the kids on it, was that their attire was saturated vibrant color. Thank u for showing the real stuff. I'm a newbee... so just learning this whole new world. But I do have a good eye for quality, design, and artistry...I think that's the key.
Hi Peter, I,m a new collector, I,ve watched several of your videos and enjoyed them very much. A lot of us new collectors will never be in able to own a early piece of chinese porcelain and may have to settle for a later copy. My question is , when you say in your videos that such and such a piece is a copy of an earlier piece are you saying it is without value, thank you for the free education . Robert in Canada
Hello Peter there was a rock glass vase or jar you stated was purchased by a rich collector who paid $50,000 at auction to realize it was not old as stated buy the auction house i think he resold it for less money it was beautiful can you please direct me to that episode i like to view it again thanks

This is one of my favorite PC videos! i learned a lot watching this one. Probably because i've been picking up a few good republican pieces, as well as a fake or two from the timeframe of 19th and 20th c pieces. Thanks!
We went to visit a former co-worker who floated aimlessly around the all-white house that his wife and her designer insisted on. If she ever decides to go wild and add a note of color, she will buy the "ugly" vase at 12:07. It's grayed down, muted, self-effacing. If she brought a real Chinese vase with its intense colors, all her friends would laugh at her.
Just an observation, but it looks to me like the vases at 24:56 were not even painted by people but mass produced transfer ware by machine. There is not the slightest deviation in color, design, or artistic ability. They are exactly the same and no two hand painted pieces are ever exactly alike, regardless of the time and place in the world where they were made. Great video!
Help me clarify -- if something I'm investigating is not something (usually) made during the republican period but its _very_ good quality, (rendering, form, glaze) does that mean it's a very good, very new copy/fake, or that it is more likely sporting an archaic mark but pre-dates the Republic? Thanks, and I realize it's 5yrs later, but you never know...

I frequently see Republican style pieces with the Buddhist pendants pattern scrolling. Nearly all the ones I've encountered are transferware. Does transferware automatically disqualify a piece as being Republican or earlier ? What is the oldest piece with some transferware you've encounter. I would love to see a video discussing transferware and if any such pieces are old, as well as how to differentiate between painted pieces and transferware. thank you!
Where does the appreciation for Chinese folk pottery dovetail without the idea of finicky perfection of porcelain rank with Chinese experts? Or even in Chinese ink painting for example? Quick energetic designs without care for fussy detail are often attractive. Serious question. Apart from Zen paintings on the art side, quick execution means lower quality all across the board (?)
Skipping the Emperor's new clothes superlatives, I think the Jie Rui Tang artwork looks more like children's comic strip stuff - but doubtless that is part of its appeal?
Understanding Chinese ceramic art or any cultural art and appreciating it, requires the same levels of understanding needed to appreciate European, Middle Eastern or the arts of Africa. It also requires an understanding of the technical difficulties of the mere making of the the objects themselves. Without all of it, the viewers appreciation and comprehension is inevitably limited to the same reactions one might have when an uninformed viewer gazes upon the ceramic art (or any art form) created through the European, Native American, Middle eastern, African or South American perspectives. Chinese ceramic art, like any other takes time, imagination and knowledge to comprehend. Best Peter

I kind of feel like the Sothebys Qianlong vase doesn't seem quite right. Something about that celadon glaze. It looks a lot like the glaze on my piece from the mid 20c. I'm wondering if the most masterful fake of all time. The two seem wrong too. They have a whole video on it. I'd be curious to know your opinion. Thanks.
Regrettably, you cannot always reply of the color balance of their photos. Hard to believe but I've seen many case where the pictures are considerably different than how they look in person. It's one reason why so many who cannot attend the auctions, hire folks to go and do a physical inspection. Best Peter

Could you recommend any comprehensive bools on Chinese and Japanese porcelain? Also I was thinking about something else in the video. I noticed there is more depth to the detail on the newer one at auction. Almost like someone was trying to hard to make it good. This could also be a difference in the photos.

What he doesn't mention is that they make new fakes that are nearly indistinguishable from the old ones. Not these cheap knock offs. Almost impossible to tell the difference. They can take years to make and even though if determined fake are valuable. There are many varieties and qualities of reproductions and some are so exquisite even experts can't tell
After handling and seeing enough pieces you can actually tell the difference, but it takes years...in my case I've been at it since the late 1970's...around 40 years. Best Peter
if a clever thief could remake the quality of old masterpieces they'd have to be masters themselves and be earning enough on their own skill without having to scam others. :p I genuinely hope they focus on improving their own skill instead of scamming unsuspecting people

Du you have any reference., by any chance:? let me know please because there must be more than explanations that you give. You just say as if you were living at that time. Hello, Determining that something is a fake or reproduction made recently is arrived at by several factors. The first and most obvious is, was the style of the piece made during the period represented at all?, Second is the art on the piece appropriate or used during a particular period. Are the colors correct, is the glaze correct? Then you have to ask, are the little things like the foot rim, shape, paste color correct for the period being claimed? Much of it comes from experience in handling tens of thousands of things for decades. It takes a long time to know the difference immediately, which is why so many have been sold into collections. It's the same process by which you examine for example a19th C. blue and white example trying to be a Kangxi (circa 1700) piece, At the time they were being made at the end of the Qing dynasty they were copies too. However, they are usually quite easy to differentiate today, but weren't at the time they were made. A lot of collections around 1890 to 1930 's were formed with very erroneously dated items. There are books on true Republic pieces, however, most of them are only in Chinese. They have been of very little interest in the west until the last 20 years, but still have a far broader audience in China. I hope this helps, Best Peter
But very often, Chinese people say your fake is good and your genuine is a fake one. you have to get a good one which is validated also by Chinese people
Reality is, Chinese collectors as a group buy more modern fakes from western auction houses than any group on earth...most have very little knowledge. They often buy based solely on pictures..In Shanghai a few years ago it got so bad the Government closed three "Museums" which had nothing but fakes in them. Kind embarrassing. Best Peter
How can you do a video on identifying Republic porcelain but only really show the best of the best which is out of reach of most people, but also not show any of these items in more detail, as in the bases and marks? I think when you do these videos Peter you really need to show and focus on more average stuff, that is in the hundreds and thousands $ range, not tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. I think this happened in another video where you are talking about fakes and mostly show imperial fakes and real imperial pieces which is pretty pointless for the average viewer.
Combs does the best he can do, like a general fighting a losing battle. Bad fakes are the straw man. What about the good fakes? They form a huge gray area than make dating and authentication hopeless, in my opinion. Particularly early 19th century--probably great fakes, not to mention the superb fakes of the modern period. Rolexes are now almost perfect, including the polishing, except for one or two parts--the copies are very expensive also. Chinese are by nature copiests--that's the problem. Look for beautiful pieces, delicate brush strokes, not too mechanical, painterly, with beautiful colors. Rugs have less of a problem with fakes, but it's still a problem--every year a famous expert buys a late piece--the talk of the market.
Some of these modern pieces are great....this guy is judging some really nice innovative pieces and his critical comments are based on his aesthetic limitations...Chinese potters are still experimenting.
Actually, I have no problem with potters making new things, that are unique and creative. But that's not what this is about, this is about blatantly making new pieces and pushing them onto the market as authentic antiques for financial gain. i.e. theft by deception. Best Peter
@@PeterCombs putting fake marks on chinese pottery is almost a tradition and could be looked at as a reference to the past....but you showed a few pieces that were obviously modern and very attractive..." but the wrong colour" ...." too stiff" ( formal)......admittedly some pieces were crap but much of it is still very attractive and finely wrought...in one hundred years it will probably be called the jiping period and sought after by collectors.

Is the option to purchase identification on your site the same as an appraisal on an item?
It's technically not a legal appraisal as we haven't seen the piece in person. If it were, it could be abused for insurance purposes. Best Peter

These fakes will be collectible in over 100 years from now. These are slightly evolved from the original pieces.
