We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Check out our website to know more about it www.oddlifecra...
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
SUBSCRIBE to our channel and join us every SUNDAY for a new episode of our journey!!

A Fortress is a good second anchor. It works in soft stuff, even loose mud like we have in the Chesapeake. It’s a Dansford type anchor that is lightweight and comes apart for easy storage. I think this would have been good with this type of bottom.
As a 17 year sailing cruiser, I agree. It is always good to have 2 or 3 different types of anchors so you have the best anchor for the type of bottom. In this case with shallow sand, a Danforth type would be better.
Yep, Danforth or Bruce style, work in that ground. Roll bar just plugs up as we saw on their video.
Thanks for the anchor explanations
You need a Danforth anchor, in Sweden we have a lot of seaweed and this sits like a rock! 👌
You have to be sure that you put enough chain in the water. It is not just the anker, it is the weight of the chain that keeps you in place.
That is true, and the rule of thumb is 1 and 1/3rd chain of the boat
It is a combination of digging/holding capability of the anchor, helped by the weight of the rode. They know about anchoring, just that this bottom condition is NOT fun to deal with.
@@southerneruk Minimum 5:1 better 7:1 length deck to bottom, so 20 feet deck to bottom 100 feet of chain out at 5:1.
Yep, scope conversation would have been interesting
Well, it depends on 1) the type of anchor for the sea bed and 2) the type of chain. If it's a mix of chain and rope you need to increase that ratio@@southerneruk
Danfourth Anchor. Good to have 2 different anchors ⚓️ to swich out as needed.
Hi guys, i've been living on boats since 1997, I never looked back from it. This life is great but it does have its ups and downs. One must enjoy this type of life to have. Your honesty about this life style is fantastic. Not many sailors will admit this. thankyou both..
Great episode 😊
Fascinating video. I had no idea that anchoring could be so difficult. You learn something new everyday. Keep well and safe. James.
You're a great diver and great crew. When you are a reduced crew, it is always good having an electric windlass that you command at the helm and at least 2 sets of anchors (Fortress is a good 2nd easily stowed anchor). In some moorings you may need two sets of anchors (bahamian mooring or in line mooring in tight spots). Still, the boat restauration and your adventures are a treat every time. Thank you
Just like their is no perfect boat for all conditions there isn't a perfect anchor for all types of anchorages. I've sailed the coast of Alaska for 20+ years and carry 3 oversized anchors of different types. A large Danforth, a Bruce , and an old school "Rock Pick" fisherman's anchor. The Danforth and Bruce are 50% oversized and the fisherman is a 50 pound break down anchor. My ground tackle is just as heavy. If the wind is strong I take a 10 pound mushroom anchor and shackle it to the anchor line. I have a light line attached to it and lower it down the anchor line to the chain shackle to take some of the shock of the anchor line tugging on the anchor. It also improves the scope to help prevent dragging. This gives me options anchoring in mud, sand. rocks and gravel. I don't like dragging.. Thanks for the video!
Unbelievable episode, anchoring tips are awesome, I learned so much on the proper way to anchor in Saint Martin. The recipes from this channel are out of this world. Thank you so much for sharing this truly epic episode.
I love them , Happy birthday Roberta, many blessings for both of you , I can wait to see the project🎉🎂🎊
It is just amazing to see how you're tackling ever day troubles, you have come a long way from those kiddos playing on this boat in the boatyard.. The life on a sailboat is as romantic as life can be, solving everday puzzles and living on to see tomorrow..
Enjoy people 🎉
You need an Lone Star Marine Anchor ⚓ they dig in deep.
It's not fun when you you drag. Happy days 😊
A little tip I learned even though I don't have the equipment on my boat. It is hanging a weight of about five kilos on the anchor chain. The weight can be fitted with a wheel and thin rope. After anchoring, the weight is brought down to about ten to fifteen meters from the anchor. Thus, the pull direction becomes more parallel to the bottom. It can significantly increase the grip of the anchor. The downside is more parts to take care of, especially if there is a rush to re-anchor anyway. Otherwise, I wish you a good trip, but you don't have to sail across the Atlantic, which I think can be both restless and quite boring. There are flights as you know.
That is a kettle.
Sounds like a good setup
Thanks!
Thank you! 💕
Amo esses vídeos de vcs
🥰😘 que bom. Beijão, tia!
You two are the nicest couple ever, even when things are going wrong you're awesome.
St. Maarten's does have a reputation with its anchorage!
At least you guys got the job done eventually.
Have fun you guys!
We didn't knot about its reputation... now we know, hehe.
This was a very good experience to have. It gives you good information to be prepared for and knowledgeable about anchoring in different bottoms. Use of different anchor types and anchoring methods in different conditions is a must for cruising. It's critical for safety and peace if mind. Add 30 knots of wind to this situation and it would have been a dreadful time. Love you guys and fair winds.
One thing that you can do to reduce your scope but still have a horizontal pull on an anchor in shallow water is use an anchor weight - it's a weight that you attach over your chain and lower down so the "pull" on the anchor is more horizontal. Tom Cunliff'e's channel has a video on using one. Unfortunatley the roll bar on Rocnas and similar will get clogged up with grass etc. other anchor types.
Victory is born in the struggle!!!!Super!!!!
👍👍😊😊
Boa noite Roberts e Duka.😄😄😄
Amazing.
Olá, sempre em viagem, continuem assim que eu quero ver mais,

Welcome to the independent country Sint Maarten within the Kingdom of the Netherlands..and thanks so much for this interesting, realistic, yummie🍝 and at times so funny😁 video again..following seas or as we say in Dutch "behouden vaart!!" Greetings from my home "'t Boegskip"⛵️ in Den Helder, the Netherlands.
Hey guys! New subscriber here! Sorry to see you had so much trouble with your anchorage. Years ago we had a "fluke" type anchor and that held ok in sand and mud, but it was a smaller boat. You could get one (sized for your boat) as a spare for this bottom condition. Just a suggestion. Also I think maybe because you have a steel hull boat you may need a larger anchor than someone with same length, but lighter hull. And if you ask around I think you'll find that some brands of anchors are better than others because of slightly different design and construction. I'm sure you have lots of friends and resources to help you out but just wanted to send you my thoughts, and my wishes for smooth sailing. Cheers :)
Yep, Bruce style, fluke anchor, does work well in mud/weed ground, really anything without a roll bar, as it plugs as shown. No bar, and it can bury itself.
Odd sent me. love to watch your posts. Ron
Olá amigos.Que sufoco.Um fundo com muito lodo.Coitado do Duca.Mas depois puderam desemparcar.Um abraço e beijo.⚓⛵⚓⛵🌺🌺
😬😁🥰
Well, looking at the last few seconds you "finally" have some fun ashore. 😊
We did 🥰
Maho beach the best hanging spot !!
When you said you want to meet your fans, you take it literally. LOL
I couldn't comment anywhere on their channel but I subscribed to krickets creations
You need a second anchor of a different type or design and probably a heavier weight. For example, if you have a Bruce anchor, get a Danforth heavier than the one you have and only use it in emergencies like this one. You can also try to let go lots of chain to add drag in the bottom.
Hello. You should have said hello and grabbed a mooring. Nettle Bay is my home. Further back is better holding for anchor too. 😊
#kitkatthesailingdog
Gente para com isso , so de ver a Roberta preparando a comida fiquei com agua na boca.😋😋😋😋
What you need is a secondary anchor and I know Duca loves his manual windlass so for a compromise a manual / electric windlass so in emergency you can operate the anchor from the helm , that way if the weather gets too bad and only the 2 of you onboard you don’t have to take unnecessary risks to haul the anchor plus even with a safety lanyard on getting back on the boat is extremely difficult, we have an Australian yachtswoman ( Kay Cottee ) who has sailed around the world but also swept overboard and dragged by her yacht for 21 hours in the southern ocean , her book is worth reading , love your journey all the best from Australia
Greatest RUclips sailors alive!
🥰
Oi lindos! Live and learn, that’s life. A vida é assim. I hope you were able to enjoy SM a little, it’s my favorite place. Can’t wait to see the next video. Bjss ❤
it's amazing how bacon changes everything
dear, your anchor is perfect it need only more chain, chain holds the boat not the anchor best regards R
Thx
I just love y'all! Even in times where I'd be a little mad/a lot mad, y'all smile 😊 and 😊and 😊! Y'all really make my day watching y'all! It's probably why, after a few episodes of watching, I went back to the very beginning of your vlog/channel. Saw all the videos on your trip! Then the container build (Marvelous), then ODD!!! All that before I met You Two!! That was a great day!! Ok, now, watching this video I did remember seeing your friend and I stopped the video after hearing the competition to Subscribe to your friend. Now the video is through, I'm going back to tell him you sent me. And since I noticed you were not in bathing suits but were wearing clothes like your cold, yes, Yall got the best of me, I can't wait, Aanticipation is awful, I'm a new PATREON!! It's about time!! Well, I've paid off a few things, and so, why not!!! I'll see you on Patreon!!
PS, I'M still waiting on my Tatoo from last year!!!🎉 🙏❤️🇺🇸🇧🇷⛵️👣🥳🎊👍
I have to admit, I'm lost. I've been watching ever since you bought Odd and started fixing her up. However, between the delay in the time between you shoot your episode and when it finally airs on RUclips and watching also on Instagram I am confused.
You were selling Odd but seem to still be aboard her? You were moving to France, but you appear to still be floating around the Caribbean during hurricane season. Would you be so kind to bring me up to date on your current whereabouts? Thanks.
Nossa!
I understand the soft bottom. Generally when backing down on the anchor use reverse in idle. 1500 to 2000 rpm is a lot especially on a soft bottom. Have you thought about getting an anchor alarm? All the best, “You gotta do what you gotta do”. 👍⛵️🏝️⚓️
Margot Bay is an excellent place to stay.
Let me say, You guys are great!!! I've been watching since you fir got the boat. Love your channel.
Avete distrutto il fondale! 😮
Just now subscribed to.Krikets
hecho!
Look into different types of Anchors for your situation, ask some of your neighbors what they are using to Anchor maybe you can get a sponsor! 🌴🌴🌴🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
You guys need a bigger heavier anchor, & an electric windless wench, & maybe a second anchor might help also.
What is the weight of Odd?
You need a different type of anchor ⚓️ for that type of bottom and should have a secondary anchor for this situations.
Na próxima sugiro tentarem a técnica com 2 âncoras, fácil de fazer, chama-se "Tandem Anchoring" e consiste em colocar uma outra âncora "em série". Para poder passear mais despreocupados...
Hi guys., what we did on similar circumstances was to put out a lot more chain, and bury the chain for several meters on the seabed. That way there is a lot more friction to prevent the dragging.
This worked up 30-35 knots of wind on a Bavaria 42, on a sandy seabed. Agreed that we were with 3 persons burying the chain..
Also to note that the wind direction was steady, this probably won't work with unsteady wind directions..
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Like you CRASHED into you r friends a few episodes ago..................(rolling eyes - caugh-caugh) LOL
Good dancer both of you
Rocna rollbar its the problem, thats why i have a Spade anchor, its top ♠️👍 a simple danford Will take a Better job on That bothom...you did a great job, and good energy👍
Boa noite Duca e Roberta. Difícil esse solo solto em a âncora não prende. Mais vcs vão mudar de lugar deve ficar melhor um grande abraço ao CASAL bons ventos.veleiro CATARINA Cabo frio RJ.
Is all your anchor chain out? If not try letting all of it and check drag after that.
If you are trying to anchor in an area where a modern anchor will not hold, try a fisherman anchor. They will penetrate seaweed, and a hard bottom better than one of the new modern anchors.
Will you be renaming the channel to Odd Life Crashing? Get a backup anchor and electric windlass! Keep Roberta happy! Good work!
Next time try a double anchor on the same chain. One ten meters ahead of the second. Use the smaller anchor in the lead.
With our Manson Supreme we would reverse hard as soon as we anchored. But when we had a Rochna with the new boat, we found that we had to wait up to 5 minutes for it to settle, then reverse harder. And usually about 10:1 chain to depth with minimum of 20m chain, no matter how shallow. Both held well when we used that method.
Olá, continuem, continuem, mas hoje tirando os aviões, foi só compras.
Domingo que vem há mais

👍👍👍👍👍👍🍀
You have hooked me on several my fav is yaba. But this one I can't give you because I have been following kiki's better half for sooooo much longer😂
Aloha, on your B&G you can set an anchor alarm ! could help to monitoring your position.
We actually learned that after this episode while talking to a friend about it 😁 thanks for the information ☺️
Bruce ;)
You need more scope on your rode. Oh I see your problem, silty bottom. I think the only cure for that is an oversized anchor or relocate until you find a good spot.
the video seemed to drag on.. and on❤😂😂😂
Ha!
Time for a new anchor.
Wow, in the beginning of the video, you guys got the history channel editing software I guess where you play the clip two or three times in a row in order to get more time
When one IS NOT SURE, it is best to leave the place
teneis que venir a Europa
Looks like you have a Rocna and they are excellent anchors , I'm assuming you have 100% chain Rode ? Another good anchor is a Sarka Excell they are supposedly the best anchor for resetting and have a very sharp downward curving nose to ensure they bury deep. Is what we are using in coral sand at the moment in Fiji and with all chain and the usual scope to depth ratio ( min 4 to 1 or even 5 to 1) it has been 100% dependable.
Soft silt bottoms with sea grass are perhaps the
Most challenging. ( our boat is a Hood 38 LOA 11. 6 M and 12. 5 tons
Guys, get a SCUBA TANK. Just one, then doing stuff under the boat will be so easy! Or didn't you have an air system? Tanks would be much easier.
Guys, i love you both a lot but...please make a plan to get an electric windlass for the anchor, it's becoming increasingly unavoidable, you can even find good used one in the hardware stores close to the coast. Good luck!
Hmm…Ya Folks have an Anchoring Problem…Ya gotta correct or become a Navigational Threat☹️ Different Anchor, Procedure, or Location, or Whatever…Hoping ya resolve before someone gets Hurt…Please Stay Safe😎
hello Friends, the chain with 5 times the bottom should be more than enough in that wind. but if you go back 2000 rpm the normal thing is that you drag the anchor, unless you break something before 😃👍👍
Perhaps adding an anchor kedge would help?
Hay you Guys put a second Anchor at the back of the Sailboat!!!!That should Help.
Oh no, not another crash!
The last one 😁
Damn y’all are sexy lil dancers once you finally got off the boat. Glad y’all kept trying to find a solid spot to anchor. Looks like you had a great time after all that work.
if you think thats bad, you need to try the Norfolk broads, the bottom can be 2 foot deep mud, so we use what we call a mud weight, a 12kg lump of steel, that sinks in the mud and the suction holds it in place. normal anchors just drag.
In that sea grass you may want to try a tandem anchor set up. It helps set your main anchor. Also dont back down so hard with the engine 2000 rpm seems excessive to me in sea grass it will always tear the roots.
Just too windy, you can probably work out what wind speed, the certain length of chain, what ground your boat is over you will always drag.
A spare second anchor to add on ?
Have a oversized anchor or two for backup.
Put out a second anchor 45 degrees from the boat. A Danforth type anchor holds better in the mud.
I assume you have an anchor alarm.
It's time to buy a different anchor.
Get a giant fold up box anchor with 300' of chain. That's what we did with no problems. Only 1' change when the anchor flips.
Bon dia. When are you jumping to Curaçao?
LOL, variety, you can eat whatever you want as long as it is Tuna or Chicken
Well done, a meal is always tops with bacon
in the med you aren't allowed to anchor in the sea grass, I'm thinking that is the reason why
all the talk about anchors and technique. What you need is a nice windlass so as not to be exhausting yourself so much! In an emergency you very well may need that extra muscle energy. A good strong windlass would have cut this hard work in half! 5 times you lifted the anchor I am tired just thinking about it.
