As expected this is really well done, transparent, and super interesting. Obviously overlanding can be done on a budget but it’s amazing how quickly builds adds up when you invest in quality gear. I think everyone has to recognise this is Robs job (as well as obvs a huge passion). A lot of ppl spend the same and it’s just a toy. Super cool rig and great video as always. ☺️
Thanks! It’s still hard to justify all that spending though 😂
Very helpful, appreciate the transparency. It’s what keeps me coming back for more - you believe in what you do and are totally committed.
Love the transparency!
Great job! Your transparency on the costs and your insightful ideas are what motivated me to subscribe.
Great video as always! Really liked the break down and transparency, especially when it you were talking about your old vehicle and what you spent there. It really puts into perspective that you don’t need everything to overland. Keep up the great work!
The 4Runner was definitely much better value and far more relatable!
Rob, I love seeing your videos and love seeing your build. As another new generation tundra overland build in progress, I really appreciate hearing this breakdown. It kind of makes me feel just a little less crazy about how much I’ve already spent.
Would LOVE to hit a trail or camp with you if you’re in the Vegas area sometime. 🤙🏼
Great breakdown and transparency in cost structure - helpful in understanding the 'bang for the buck' trade-off most people have to consider
Great breakdown, Rob. Love your rig and thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I love your channel, your truck, and content, and... with that financial output, I think I will just live vicariously through you when it comes to modding my 22' Tundra lol! Thanks Brother - Stay Safe!
That’s a much cheaper way to do it! You’ve got a great truck, even without doing a fraction of what I’ve done.
Nice to see a channel so open, honest and transparent. That's a lot of dang money but ya got yourself a hell a truck too also helps grow your channel. Like the old saying goes gotta spent money to make money.
The Tundra videos have definitely been popular, but I’m not sure it’ll ever pay for itself. We’ll have to see.
appreciate you sharing the info. great build. you've helped me understand a lot.
Yo Bro! Just want to say, thx you for sharing the Overland Tundra Build cost breakdown. Also thx for sharing the actual reality cost of your previous 4Runner build cost also.….Jeeez, that was a Major big difference.
WOW!!!! I hope your channel is successful and can support that expensive vehicle. Your videos are well done and interesting. As a subscriber I look forward to each new video. I dream of traveling like you, a member of the rich and famous overlanding family, but then I come back to ground level and hop back into my 2003 Jeep TJ (with over 250,000 miles on it) towing my $1700 DIY offroad trailer. I travel with a smile on my face and the wish that you will keep making my dream videos for me. Thanks for what you do.😀
A lot of comments seem shocked by the costs, but i see trucks like yours all over the place. At least you have a more professional reason to justify it. It seems pretty common for people to pay so much for 'overland' rigs like yours, let alone the RVs, quad bikes, etc.
Makes my 2 door JK and a tent look skinny and poor, but still gets out there
This reminds me of professional gamer computer setups. They feature the best of the best parts, along with bells and whistles that average (even gamer) people scoff at. "This is way overbuilt" or "Why would you spend that much?" is frequently heard. They fail to realize that it's their job and 'just enough to have fun' isn't usually the goal. Same can be said for so many other activities, something about men and boys being separated? 👍
I like the comparison!
"Most expensive thing should be gas" - Well Done
oh man. an eye opener for sure. Thank you!
It adds up quick! I personally try not to keep track of the fuel side of the expenses to limit the amount of puking I do, lol.
Lol! I have to track it all for taxes!
Oh my. Good news: I was laying down when you gave the price of the Habitat. Bad news: I sh-t the bed when you gave the price of the Habitat.
Great video with all the details and prices included. You’ve come a long way since the old 4Runner!
God bless you that you have the income to build this overland truck. While I really enjoy your videos I cannot imagine being wealthy enough to afford this type of a rig. Please keep videos coming in case I win the lottery.
Thanks for doing this. I'm more curious on your thoughts on the AT habitat. Not from a build quality perspective, but more about how you don't know if the expense was justified based on your use case. For me as a viewer, it looks like the ultimate solution for both family and work use, so it would be awesome to hear more about your perspective having owned it for a while vs what you had with the ikamper.
Check out an FWC project M as well, I think the habitat bed is only about 40"
I’ll be making a video on it in September. The quick story is that I love it, and it’s definitely the best for what I do, but Im not sure I can justify it financially from a personal or business perspective.
@@RevereOverland The habitat has doubled in price since it came out. It was originally around $7k starting IIRC.
@@SasukeUchiha-zu6dw The habitat is 48in wide.
It seems that you spend most of your time overlanding out West, but live in Kentucky. Ever thought of moving out west to avoid all the cross country interstate driving?
Every single day.
House prices are far higher than in Kentucky, unfortunately, so it’s still cheaper to commute! We’ve considered renting a storage unit in Denver or Salt Lake City and flying out, because that’s cheaper than moving or driving every time.
$117,702 not including labor and other costs. Why not include them to give a more accurate amount? Considering all you've done and all you've got for free, that would probably bring it over $130,000 easily. Do you think spending all that money has increased viewership in your channel and thus increased your revenue?
I mean post 100k I don't know if many would really care at that point lol. It's interesting to show transparency in cost of what it takes to get this truck to where it is at, but it is very niche for someone to be spending that kind of money on a rig. I think just the parts alone is enough to give folks the perspective of what the costs are.
Two reasons. The first is that for someone trying to replicate this, the tax, delivery, and install costs are going to vary by a lot. The second is that I didn’t want to have to dig through all my receipts to find exact amounts, since mine also varied wildly depending on state or purchase, whether I installed it, or had someone install it for me!
The truck has definitely helped with views, affiliate sales, my own website sales, and a lower tax bill, but it’s still a long way from paying for itself!
@@RevereOverland mostly the 2nd reason I'm guessing 😜😋 That's a lot of record keeping.
@@NigelNaughton yes, mostly the second reason!
Really cool build and it’s awesome some of the companies valued your channel and content enough to “give” you some of the gear - although, the time you put in to develop the content is probably worth a lot. With that said, for “normal” people who aren’t RUclipsrs, I hope folks arent spending this much on rigs to get out there. Man, there’s a whole world out there to explore. Spend money on that, folks! I have a ‘19 Rebel loaded to the point I was able to take along the Pony Express no problem and many other adventures and a ‘77 FJ40. All in, for both rigs, I’d say 54k. And that’s a lot, IMO.
I know plenty of people who’ve spent far more, but they have plenty left over to explore too! The average person shouldn’t though - I’m not condoning poor financial decisions!
Got some serious things on there...🙌❗
Great info! I see you use a Icom Ham radio on 2m, great radio. What is your FCC Ham radio license/call sign in case I run across you on the air!?
I don’t share online just because it’s too easy to look up addresses with the callsigns, but just listen out for the British guy!
What do you do for insurance? You've got an entire extra car worth of mods on top of your truck, do you just pray you don't get in a random accident on the way to your trips?
Gas in the state of Ca. was probably more than two trucks lmao
The most I’ve ever paid for gas and the most expensive gas I’ve ever seen (that I didn’t buy) were both in Idaho! It seems Washington is way more expensive than California now too.
@@RevereOverland was in Arkansas for 2.99 a gallon, came home to Ca. 4.99 a gallon in June!!
Yeah it sucks having to pay that, especially when a video doesn’t do very well from it! It was $3.03 when I left Kentucky, and I had to pay $5.39 in Washington! Last year we saw it for $9.00 in Idaho.
@@RevereOverland Oh man, My daughter and I just finished a 6k mile trip in the 2020 tundra with an FWC camper on it, and gas was a huge part of the budget, but it did feel good hitting TN, AR, TX, OK,and KS with the gas prices lol
Are you able to still have the spare tire under your bed with the Cbi rear bumper?
Yes, as long as the tire is 35” or less.
Just about had a heart attack watching this.
How many inches of lift do you have?
My guess is way, way more on mods than gas. I came up with an estimate for fuel cost at around $20k. The Habitat alone starts around $14k so...
You got it! Thankfully fuel is less so far.
It doesn’t even have a V8 😊 nice video Rob!
Lol!
You don't need any of it - all you need is a canteen/jerky and either a mule or camel.......well a water filtration device would be nice. Might as well have a truck, go ahead and get a 4x4, might as well get a full size, and a crew cab, and all terrain tires and thats it. Well, might as well get some off road wheels and upgrade the suspension.....tents suck, so get a roof top tent. You can't have that without a roof rack or bed rack, oh yea a frig. would be nice and some extra lights and light bars, but NO MORE.....oh wait forgot the air compressor and sliders. Heck I'm in it this far, so "might as well" order skid plates, front and rear bumpers.....but NO MORE.....well Toyota paint is known to be thin, so "might as well" wrap it in vinyl.......sheesh wish I'd just stayed with the camel.....but I might as well buy a winch and a RedArc battery mgmt. system. (divorce now inevitable) and possibly jail time because now I can't afford child support......wish I'd just kept the canteen/jerky/mule set up.
This reminds of an episode of Malcolm in the Middle where the military prep school kids are going out camping and each one is boasting about how little they're bringing, one upping each other along the way.
ETA: I had trouble finding the clip on YT so I found it in the show, S01E13 Rollerskates at 10:45
Lol! Modding for overlanding is a definitely a slippery slope.
Also, I haven’t seen Malcolm in the Middle in a very very long time.
Curious if you've had any issues with deducting as a business expense? Were you able to use section 179 to deduct the entire expense for 2021?
No issues, since it’s used 100% for business. I wrote off just enough that I basically had no income for 2021, and can use the rest for the next few years.
Knowing what you know now about the cost, would you do it again? Buying the tundra and modding it?
Probably, but definitely not if I didn’t have the channel. I’d still be in my $15k 4Runner.
@@RevereOverland dang.
30K to 35K for different equipment, tires , lift, and other upgrades that is not included 38 K Nissan Titan XD and still paying off 15K left . So total is 73K after all but still buying small things
So basically- become a RUclips channel so you can get tons of free stuff with enough stuff added. Love your videos either way
That helps, but the key is to be the first person to have a high-demand vehicle.
not bad, considering your ROI has probably been worth it.
That tent price is obscene, I don't care how the company selling it tries to justify it lol.
Good Lord
RUclips is a business so I (kind of) get why channels do it but for a regular guy/gal, spending $117k to go camping is not a viable or even sensible option unless you got all the bases covered in life and got extra cash on hand.
Taking out a loan to buy all this is a horrible idea considering the terrible resale value.
I'm still a solid follower if the channel because I learn of new places to go. As for gear, the new stuff is unobtainium and your older videos are more usable to me.
This is a professional rig for a professional overlander. You should never compare yourself to a professional in any field. Do you spend the same amount as a professional musician? hunter? gamer? In general, those are two different price points, as they should be.
@@Vagitarian01
That was my point.
His channel is a business so showcasing gear is part of it.
Agreed. I definitely enjoyed the relatability with viewers of the 4Runner. I’m also a huge supporter of owning a house before putting money into hobbies like overlanding, and hope that no one lives beyond their means trying to replicate what I do!
$117,702.
Who needs a retirement. 😅
😂
I guess I’ll still be YouTubing at 90 years old 😂
It would look so sick if the habitat was black.
It’s hard to relate to this experience with all that gear
Totally agree. I’ve been really tempted to do a budget build, and almost got a Land Rover for $3k (to also use as a grocery getter). I’m not sure I’d see a ROI on it though.
@@RevereOverland my wife and I have a Subaru Crosstrek and a gazelle T4 and this is the most I’ve ever spent on a vehicle and camping. The idea that this is all throw away money turns my stomach a bit. I’ve decided to hold off for a while and focus on trying to buy my first house now that I’m in my 40s. Crazy economy these days.
@@RevereOverland
I think a $3k Land Rover video series would be a great ROI actually.
dont all of these mods void toyotas warranty anyway? no point in buying it at that rate.
No, because no warranty can be blanket voided by a single modification. My suspension components and sensors won’t be covered due to the modifications, but engine, transmission, and interior electrical components are all still good. Toyota still covered my wing mirror camera falling out, even though I was outside of the mileage for their warranty.
At what point do you say enough is enough? Seems like there’s always a new mod that is next…
I definitely need to stop!
As his wife, I agree. He has serious FOMO 😂
Why in the world would you omit labor & tax? I grant that you may not have paid the labor and so it might be hard to calculate, but for the numbers to be meaningful to someone who’s not getting comped, they’re necessary.
Because your labor rates, delivery, and tax are going to be very different depending on where you live and the shop you go to or if you do it yourself. The electrical system, for example, cost me nothing to install because I did it myself. The next person might spend $1,500 having someone do that same install. Another example is the Habitat: I paid $0 in tax in Oregon, but if I’d bought it in Arizona I’d have paid around $1,500 in tax.
Yeah shipping here in Hawai’i sucks donkey ballz plus shops can charge basically what they want.
