I used to work with a guy whose brother-in-law got his own sister pregnant and she ended up killing herself. People never think about what their actions might do to others.
This happens a lot still but was very common years ago. Family members didn't talk about these things and would act as if it didn't happen and this could be a part of it. Cost is probably a large part of it. A lot of families have plots like this where everyone gets buried regardless of how or why they died. I know it sounds and feels wrong to us in a lot of ways, but regardless of what he did, he was still someone's dad, their brother, son, friend, whatever...memorials are for the living, not the dead. This is a place where their loved ones are supposed to be able to go to pay respects and mourn their loss. A son lost his entire family all at once, dad included...he deserves to be able to mourn. Plus, he had to be put somewhere I guess. I really do get it though.

My father was in law enforcement for years.He told me one time..It never fails to amaze me what man will do to his fellow man.This story is testimony to that.Just shocking.
Read the book The Meaning of Our Tears. I have the book. It goes in depth with this family with interviews of other family members who are all now gone. Immediate family members I mean. During the autopsy, it was said that Marie wasn't pregnant but family members think otherwise. Charlie told the family on Christmas Eve that they were going into town and he had a surprise for them. When they got to town, he told them to go pick out a nice outfit for Christmas and he wanted to get a picture of everyone in their new clothes. Everyone was so excited. This is why this is the only know picture of the family together. The next day, Christmas, Charlie set out with his plan. It is assumed the reason Charlie sent Arthur off is because Arthur was bigger than Charlie and he would have stopped Charlie from doing this to the family. So as soon as Arthur was gone, Charlie started the killing. When the two girls walked past the tobacco barn, Charlie stepped out and shot both of them. He then dragged them into the tobacco barn and laid both girls out with their hands crossed and a rock under their head for a pillow. He then walked up to the house where his wife was on the porch. He shot and killed her. Marie was putting the finishing touches on a raisin cake she had made. When she heard the shot, she ran outside and saw her Mother laying dead on the porch with Charlie standing over her. Charlie then raised his gun and shot Marie. The two little boys had only heard the shots but with Marie screaming, both boys tried to find a place to hide. One hid under the bed and Charlie found him right away. The other little boy hid behind the stove. Charlie had a little difficulty getting him out but he finally was successful. The last one was the baby which he beat in the head with the butt of his rifle. After Charlie had laid everyone out with their hands crossing their body and a pillow under their head, Charlie headed for the woods next to his house. He sat down next to a tree along with his dog, and stayed like that for hours. Then he would get up and walk around the tree. It is said he left a trail where he went around and around the tree. The family was supposed to be going to visit Charlie's brother who lived next door. Keep in mind this is the country so the next door neighbor was miles apart. When no one showed up, the brother came over to see what was keeping them. This is when he found the wife and daughter on the porch. He walked inside and saw the rest of the family dead. His first thought was an intruder did this. Then in the distance, he heard gunfire. Marion then walked down to the woods in the direction of the sound of the gunfire. There he found Charlie dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Charlie had two notes in his pocket for his parents. What you saw on the headstone under the parents names is what Charlie wrote in one of his notes. Arthur came up on the scene by now and he was inconsolable. After a few weeks went by, Marion decided to open the home up for paid tours of the house for 25 cents each. The blood was still there along with Marie's raisin cake. As people passed by, they would take a raisin off of the cake for a keepsake. Marion eventually had to put a glass container over the cake to stop people. It is said that a little neighborhood boy was visiting and he actually witnessed Charlie killing everyone. He was hiding but as quick as he could he ran from the house as fast as he could go. Charlie saw him but just let him go as Charlie wanted to finish killing off his family. No one really knows the reason Charlie did this but the family members said Charlie was barely making it. He decided instead of everyone suffering with no food to eat, he would just kill himself and take the family with him. However this is just a guess. Another said it was because Marie was pregnant with Charlie's baby. Again, just a rumor that no one knew for sure. Marie's best friend came out years later and said that Marie had shared with her that she was pregnant with her Dad's child and she was so ashamed and didn't know what she was going to do. Just such a tragic story.
The rumor is that his son, Arthur was the only one that could stop him so he waited for him to leave. It's really so very sad. Marie also baked a Christmas dinner cake with her Mama that day & after the murders locals took bits for souvenirs when they toured the house. Hundreds of people went to the funeral.
I live 10 minutes from this area and it’s still remembered how gruesome, inhumane, and disgusting it was. Lamont, thank you so much for sharing this story so close to my hometown!

A while back, I was on another board where we were talking about a sexual-abuse case involving an Amish community. Another poster said, "I am just sick! I didn't know the Amish were even capable of knowing that people do things like this to each other!" and the rest of us said things like, "Think about how our ancestors lived 100 years ago; this kind of thing happened back then, too, and the Amish aren't really as different from 'us' as most people may think."
You know I have a family member who killed his sister and he's buried next to the sister he killed. This happened in 60s before I was even born. You gotta realize that some families can't afford to bury their people in separate cemeteries. That's the price of being poor i guess.

It was just someone's unsubstantiated belief that Marie was pregnant at all, let alone by her father! He might have just, as the newspaper said, "gone crazy", believed his whole family was possessed by demons and had to be destroyed. Who really knows now?
Yeah, it sucks but it's actually pretty common, especially for that time. Sometimes families buy a plot ahead of time for everyone to be buried in. To save money and space I'm sure. It's hard to think about tho, I know. I also think this was done because his brother probably arranged the funerals and resting spot or whatever and he sounds like a money hungry opportunist, so I'm sure he did whatever was going to save him money. My grandfather was 19 at the time and lived only a few miles as the crow flies from where this happened. My mother was only a couple of weeks old. He had heard about what happened and was afraid “ crazy Charlie” might be coming his way. Of course, Lawson was probably already dead by the time he got the news. My grandfather was such a gentle soul . Secondarily, there’s a lot of denial but incest is the only thing that logically makes sense of all this tragedy. Occam’s razor.
After we die, we evaporate or rot and go into the air around us, which is heaven. His brain was underdeveloped. Some people don't know how to love. Such as the red-head teen who beat the four year old to death.He probably felt love for him as charlie did for his family. Maybe if they come back to life again they will have a good life or stay happy in heaven forever.I told someone that might have hurt me that after I died and went to heaven, I might come back and punish him for what he did and he didn't bother me.
I can't image what the surviving family member went through in life having to not only go on living without his family but I'm sure his ears burned for the remainder of his life over the rumors and speculation about his late family. The surviving son’s widow told in an interview that he didn’t believe his father killed the family, which is probably why the father is buried with them. Also, the pregnancy was never confirmed as they didn’t do an autopsy. On that daughter. The 1929 version of an assessment of this man’s brain probably wasn’t the best since we are still learning about the impacts of physical and emotional trauma on the brain. The extended family still lives in the area and still talk about the impact this has on their lives. What happened is unimaginable, but it is important to remember we have no idea why this man snapped like this. And if it gave that 16 yr old boy some solace to have his father buried with the family, then what I think doesn’t matter.
The photo is interesting. Marie and her mother especially look miserable as hell and everyone else looks unhappy. Meanwhile,Charlie is the only one who looks happy in the shot. Almost the same story happened to a family named Simmons in Dover, Arkansas in the 1980's. Ronald Gene Simmons killed 17 people total most of whom were his family members. One of the victims was the child of his daughter and himself.

Few years back in the South of Ireland, a teacher murdered his wife and 3 kids before taking his own life. He too was buried with the family. The wife's mother and sister were both grief stricken, in a terrible place and in no fit state to plan the funerals. Family members did so and they were all buried together. Once the mum & sister were able to, they had him exhumed.
This story is eerily similar to mass murderer, John List from Forensic Files. He also killed his wife, sons, daughter and mother. After killing them said a prayer, turned on the AC and some music and walked right out the door. That monster moved to another state, got a job, remarried and went about his life like nothing. He was captured many years later and imprisoned. That story haunted me for years.
I’ve read a lot on psychopathy and the consensus is that psychopaths and narcissists have a part of their brains that is underdeveloped. Childhood trauma can also cause it. It can also be caused by injury in some cases. This is truly horrific. RIP to the sweet babies.

Lamont , please do a story on Judge Potter of Marion, Illinois. He killed his whole family. They all lived in a big old Victorian house. There is a book in our public library titled The Potters House. They say , The Judge was going through financially difficult times , freaked out and killed all of them. Also The Judge was a planter and at one time owned a big nut farm.
I've heard about that story. I'm originally from Vienna, IL and my uncle, aunt and cousins are from Marion, IL. Spent lots of time in Marion growing up. My grandfather was a Methodist preacher in Marion too. Also, my grandparents are buried there as well. Do you happen to remember any Tolleys from Marion? Small world!
I lived briefly in Marion a while back. That's where John Wayne Gacy was incarcerated, and executed. Lamont, if you're ever in southern Illinois, you should check out the Cavaness family murders. He was a physician and serial killer, and two of his victims included his own sons; he took out large life insurances policies on them and then killed them. There's a book about it called "Murder In Little Egypt."

I use to live in one of the apartments. That judge threw himself in a deep well in the back yard . It killed him. I've lived here since I was 13. I'm now age 64 . Sorry I do not recall the last name that you mentioned. Marion is no longer a small town like it use to be , We are a small city now. Marion now reaches all the way to Carbondale. All the Potter graves are facing the street . You can see them driving by that cemetery on North Court Street that your grandfather was buried in . I do know alot of people here , but the name you mentioned doesn't ring a bell in my head . About 20 years ago they finally tore down the old mansion . It's a empty lot now. If you use to come to Marion , there is no doubt in my mind that you had to of drove past the old Potter Mansion. We use to go to Vienna alot when I was a kid , to the school basketball games. Great video Lamont, it reminds me of the Bigham family in Florence county here in South Carolina. The Bigham family had a long history of murdering dating back to the 1800s. One of the sons went crazy and murdered the whole Bigham family in the 20s. They are buried at a local Baptist church close to Florence in the Pamplico area. I believe the son who did the killing was named Edmund Bigham. They were a notoriously and cunningly mean family that no one wanted to cross or get on their bad side. If so you would disappear for good. Thought you might like to know about them because the Lawson's remind me of them. There are books you can look up on the Bighams like A Piece of the Fox's Hide and The Last of The Bighams. The Florence Morning Newspaper has a lot of historical information on them as well. Thanks.

Thank you for showing a spotlight on this story, i have heard this story before growing up near the area. We so often act as though the world is just now becoming evil, when the sad fact is it has always been here. I understand family photos were such a rare treat for anyone during this era esp for a family such as the Lawson's, I always wondered if it foreshadowed anything for the poor mother who already knew the sadistic truth of her husband. I pray it was a treat for her, getting her and her babies dressed up and showed instead of an alarm bell.

Mortality rates were higher because of lack of medical care, before vaccines for childhood diseases etc. People used to lay out loved ones in coffins in their houses, even take photos of them. After Charles Lindberghs infant son was kidnapped and murdered, during the trial, hawkers we're outside the courthouse selling pieces of wood that allegedly came from the stepladder that the kidnapper used to climb into the house ( this was in the 20s too) Just hard to wrap your mind around someone exploiting their own relatives, really sounds like greed😠

The fact that the alleged incest/rape came out 71 years after the murders raises a red flag for me on it's validity. This person (or people) had this info for over a 7 decades and never let it slip out? Sounds fishy too me. None the less horrible tragedy. May they all rest in peace.

Look at the thumbnail pic and then compare them, especially the guys, to examples of badly inbred people. There's your answer. The whole lot of them were inbreeders. It's why several of the weirder Christian and other groups emigrated to the Americas - so they could shag their family members in peace. If they were neurologically damaged (and you can't tell that by physical brain tissue exams often) the father might just have been insane/retarded his whole life, and the rumours or even something completely unrelated triggered him off. And I'm a bit suspicious how he manages to knock off so many people without them realising sooner. That's special forces grade killing. I suspect he had help and it was covered up or not noticed at the time.

Mrs. Lawson had a 4 month old infant AND other children to raise -- Lord knows she had her hands full. Too bad her extended family couldn't help. This was during the Great Depression. Few options for a woman with many children. Poor babies, their last moments must have been beyond terrifying. In those days, a woman's role in the family was to honor and obey...and bear children. Mrs. Lawson was trapped in a marriage with a sick man. We will probably never know about the times a wife has successfully 'removed' a sick, predatory, husband.

Not uncommon in earlier times. Some were even buried in specially widened caskets together.

He then dragged them into the tobacco barn and laid both girls out with their hands crossed and a rock under their head for a pillow. He then walked up to the house where his wife was on the porch. He shot and killed her. Marie was putting the finishing touches on a raisin cake she had made. When she heard the shot, she ran outside and saw her Mother laying dead on the porch with Charlie standing over her. Charlie then raised his gun and shot Marie. The two little boys had only heard the shots but with Marie screaming, both boys tried to find a place to hide. One hid under the bed and Charlie found him right away. The other little boy hid behind the stove. Charlie had a little difficulty getting him out but he finally was successful. The last one was the baby which he beat in the head with the butt of his rifle. After Charlie had laid everyone out with their hands crossing their body and a pillow under their head, Charlie headed for the woods next to his house. He sat down next to a tree along with his dog, and stayed like that for hours. Then he would get up and walk around the tree. It is said he left a trail where he went around and around the tree. The family was supposed to be going to visit Charlie's brother who lived next door. Keep in mind this is the country so the next door neighbor was miles apart. When no one showed up, the brother came over to see what was keeping them. This is when he found the wife and daughter on the porch. He walked inside and saw the rest of the family dead. His first thought was an intruder did this. Then in the distance, he heard gunfire. Marion then walked down to the woods in the direction of the sound of the gunfire. There he found Charlie dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Charlie had two notes in his pocket for his parents. What you saw on the headstone under the parents names is what Charlie wrote in one of his notes. Arthur came up on the scene by now and he was inconsolable.
After a few weeks went by, Marion decided to open the home up for paid tours of the house for 25 cents each. The blood was still there along with Marie's raisin cake. As people passed by, they would take a raisin off of the cake for a keepsake. Marion eventually had to put a glass container over the cake to stop people.
It is said that a little neighborhood boy was visiting and he actually witnessed Charlie killing everyone. He was hiding but as quick as he could he ran from the house as fast as he could go. Charlie saw him but just let him go as Charlie wanted to finish killing off his family.
No one really knows the reason Charlie did this but the family members said Charlie was barely making it. He decided instead of everyone suffering with no food to eat, he would just kill himself and take the family with him. However this is just a guess. Another said it was because Marie was pregnant with Charlie's baby. Again, just a rumor that no one knew for sure. Marie's best friend came out years later and said that Marie had shared with her that she was pregnant with her Dad's child and she was so ashamed and didn't know what she was going to do.
Just such a tragic story.

Marie also baked a Christmas dinner cake with her Mama that day & after the murders locals took bits for souvenirs when they toured the house. Hundreds of people went to the funeral.

It was just someone's unsubstantiated belief that Marie was pregnant at all, let alone by her father! He might have just, as the newspaper said, "gone crazy", believed his whole family was possessed by demons and had to be destroyed. Who really knows now?
Yeah, it sucks but it's actually pretty common, especially for that time. Sometimes families buy a plot ahead of time for everyone to be buried in. To save money and space I'm sure. It's hard to think about tho, I know. I also think this was done because his brother probably arranged the funerals and resting spot or whatever and he sounds like a money hungry opportunist, so I'm sure he did whatever was going to save him money. I don't think it's a far stretch to think maybe that was the case, when you take into account that he opened their murder house to the public and profited off the deaths of multiple family members. He sounds like an awesome piece of work too. The living son Arthur died at a young age in a car accident. He had a you f wife and 4 young children. I just learned that minutes ago. 💔

My grandfather was 19 at the time and lived only a few miles as the crow flies from where this happened. My mother was only a couple of weeks old. He had heard about what happened and was afraid “ crazy Charlie” might be coming his way. Of course, Lawson was probably already dead by the time he got the news. My grandfather was such a gentle soul .
Secondarily, there’s a lot of denial but incest is the only thing that logically makes sense of all this tragedy. Occam’s razor.
After we die, we evaporate or rot and go into the air around us, which is heaven.
His brain was underdeveloped. Some people don't know how to love. Such as the red-head teen who beat the four year old to death.He probably felt love for him as charlie did for his family. Maybe if they come back to life again they will have a good life or stay happy in heaven forever.I told someone that might have hurt me that after I died and went to heaven, I might come back and punish him for what he did and he didn't bother me.

The surviving son’s widow told in an interview that he didn’t believe his father killed the family, which is probably why the father is buried with them. Also, the pregnancy was never confirmed as they didn’t do an autopsy. On that daughter. The 1929 version of an assessment of this man’s brain probably wasn’t the best since we are still learning about the impacts of physical and emotional trauma on the brain. The extended family still lives in the area and still talk about the impact this has on their lives. What happened is unimaginable, but it is important to remember we have no idea why this man snapped like this. And if it gave that 16 yr old boy some solace to have his father buried with the family, then what I think doesn’t matter.
The photo is interesting. Marie and her mother especially look miserable as hell and everyone else looks unhappy. Meanwhile,Charlie is the only one who looks happy in the shot. He had probably made up his mind what to do and was at ease with his choice. How screwed-up must someone be that they do this to their family?

Almost the same story happened to a family named Simmons in Dover, Arkansas in the 1980's. Ronald Gene Simmons killed 17 people total most of whom were his family members. One of the victims was the child of his daughter and himself.

Few years back in the South of Ireland, a teacher murdered his wife and 3 kids before taking his own life. He too was buried with the family. The wife's mother and sister were both grief stricken, in a terrible place and in no fit state to plan the funerals. Family members did so and they were all buried together. Once the mum & sister were able to, they had him exhumed.
These murders were brutal, hard & cruel. The killer had no pity or mercy for his family. RIP Lawson family🙏

This story is eerily similar to mass murderer, John List from Forensic Files. He also killed his wife, sons, daughter and mother. After killing them said a prayer, turned on the AC and some music and walked right out the door. That monster moved to another state, got a job, remarried and went about his life like nothing. He was captured many years later and imprisoned. That story haunted me for years.

I’ve read a lot on psychopathy and the consensus is that psychopaths and narcissists have a part of their brains that is underdeveloped. Childhood trauma can also cause it. It can also be caused by injury in some cases. This is truly horrific. RIP to the sweet babies.

Lamont , please do a story on Judge Potter of Marion, Illinois. He killed his whole family. They all lived in a big old Victorian house. There is a book in our public library titled The Potters House. They say , The Judge was going through financially difficult times , freaked out and killed all of them. Also The Judge was a planter and at one time owned a big nut farm.

I lived briefly in Marion a while back. That's where John Wayne Gacy was incarcerated, and executed.

He was a physician and serial killer, and two of his victims included his own sons; he took out large life insurances policies on them and then killed them. There's a book about it called "Murder In Little Egypt."

Great video Lamont, it reminds me of the Bigham family in Florence county here in South Carolina. The Bigham family had a long history of murdering dating back to the 1800s. One of the sons went crazy and murdered the whole Bigham family in the 20s. They are buried at a local Baptist church close to Florence in the Pamplico area. I believe the son who did the killing was named Edmund Bigham. They were a notoriously and cunningly mean family that no one wanted to cross or get on their bad side. If so you would disappear for good. Thought you might like to know about them because the Lawson's remind me of them. There are books you can look up on the Bighams like A Piece of the Fox's Hide and The Last of The Bighams. The Florence Morning Newspaper has a lot of historical information on them as well. Thanks.

We so often act as though the world is just now becoming evil, when the sad fact is it has always been here. I understand family photos were such a rare treat for anyone during this era esp for a family such as the Lawson's, I always wondered if it foreshadowed anything for the poor mother who already knew the sadistic truth of her husband. I pray it was a treat for her, getting her and her babies dressed up and showed instead of an alarm bell.

Mortality rates were higher because of lack of medical care, before vaccines for childhood diseases etc. People used to lay out loved ones in coffins in their houses, even take photos of them. After Charles Lindberghs infant son was kidnapped and murdered, during the trial, hawkers we're outside the courthouse selling pieces of wood that allegedly came from the stepladder that the kidnapper used to climb into the house ( this was in the 20s too) Just hard to wrap your mind around someone exploiting their own relatives, really sounds like greed😠

Look at the thumbnail pic and then compare them, especially the guys, to examples of badly inbred people. There's your answer. The whole lot of them were inbreeders. It's why several of the weirder Christian and other groups emigrated to the Americas - so they could shag their family members in peace. If they were neurologically damaged (and you can't tell that by physical brain tissue exams often) the father might just have been insane/retarded his whole life, and the rumours or even something completely unrelated triggered him off.
And I'm a bit suspicious how he manages to knock off so many people without them realising sooner. That's special forces grade killing. I suspect he had help and it was covered up or not noticed at the time.
Too bad the mother didn’t shoot him first , call it an accident, she had plenty of witnesses to corroborate her story. Men don’t carry the child and give it life , nurture it and love it like a mother does…The evil that men do , dogs are better companions.

One could imagine that it was very hard for loved ones to visit and tend the grave, knowing that the evil bastard who abused and murdered them so horribly in buried in the same plot. Should have been dumped on the edge of town for stray dogs to carry off.
