The border between Somalia and Ogaden was created by the military expansion of Abyssinia during the reign of emperor Menelik II. Meanwhile Italian Somaliland was forming primarily out of the voluntary protectorate treaties signed by various local sultans. Just to illustrate that the border wasn’t formed as an agreement between European states (like other borders in parts of sub Saharan Africa and the Middle East). 3. Uniting an ethnolinguistic group under a single government comes from the European concept of the nation state. This was both foreign and destructive to the region. 4. Foreign allies are leveraged in every conflict but there is an optionality to their investment. In the somewhat related Abyssinian-Adal war, Adal had many volunteer troops from the Yemen while Abyssinia had the support of a Portuguese contingent. That war took place in the context of the Portuguese-Ottoman wars of that era. In the Ogaden conflict, Cuban troops fought bravely for Ethiopia and Egypt’s government put a considerable effort into arming and supplying the Somali military. Without that support, the Somali military would never have had attempted an invasion. 5. If anything, foreigners actually saved Somalia because the only reason that Ethiopia didn’t continue onward to annex Somalia after expelling them from Ogaden, was the pressure to maintain status quo borders insisted on by the US and USSR. 6. General Siad Barre of Somalia was born in the Shilavo woreda in Ethiopia. He participated in the Italian invasion of Ethiopia as a zaptié or colonial police officer (in Ogaden) during WW2. After that war, he joined the British colonial police forces in British Somaliland, where he rose to the status of major general. It would be reasonable to conclude that he invaded Ogaden because it was his homeland and because he believed he could retrace the steps of fascist Italy. Somali unification was only an excuse judging from his treatment of Isaaq clan.

This was my dad's only war, he was there as a 27 y.o. MiG-21 mechanic. He was sent to Ethiopia without any insignia as a 'cattle veterinarian'. A typical Soviet style 'green men' policy of deniable intervention. Their airbase (Dire Dawa?) in the desert survived a few attacks by the Somalian tanks. A few of his Cuban pilots friends were killed there. A weird forgotten war.
