I think I've made a decision as I don't get many boards and what I get would be of low quality and there's nowhere really to take/send boards to here in England. So, when I get my butt into gear and start scrapping, I will depop everything and sort into the component parts and by the time I have enough maybe there will be somewhere to send them. It can be tedious at times Karen. I'm a "cherry picker" when it comes to depopulating, so that can take time. Hopefully it will be worth it in the long run.

23:00 Don't EVER throw away the black platic on top of the IC's That is where most of your gold is! All the bonding wires are located in the plastic. The gold left behind on the pcb is insignificant and most times you can just throw that away. ( I cut off the gold corner.) Some of the gold pads will stick to the plastic too. If you're really lucky, all the gold pads will remain on the pcb after you pop off the plastic .You can then determine if it's worth processing them. I just cut around the gold parts and save the centers to avoid getting the tin and lead in my chemicals. E-waste Ben made this mistake, and then quickly corrected himself after I left him a comment.

Hello shark. When I do my boards, I have an old rug on the work bench, you might have seen it. The rug helps the boards Stay still when I pick off things with a screwdriver, when using a hammer and chisel I put the board against the benchvise, that way it stays in place. Learned something from you as well,, I did not know about the Niobium stuff, will keep them separate from tantalum.
I must admit, I'm torn between using a chuck of rug and the cutting board. I've done both and like both. Usually holding the board steady when I'm not recording is not an issue. I can just bang through them. I'll continue researching the Niobium and post updates I come across.
@@sharkscrapper no problem holding boards when not filmning of course. I need to get a camera and stand for the garage. Not much fun scrapping with one hand and holding the phone with the other hand. With a bit of luck I might have found a buyer for tantalum and mlcc palladium, don't know price of tantalum but I think €53/gram for palladium is rather good.
One thing I discovered is, certain boards I can totally flex or bend and the BGAs and gold corner ones and some flat packs will detach a little, then they pry off much easier. We’ll explained techniques. Thanks 👍
That's a great tip - thanks for sharing it. I'm moving away from depopulating these days. I've secured some corporate accounts and I need to keep things moving pretty fast. That and good sale prices from BOARDSORT.COM make it more cost effective for me to reduce my depopulating activity.
@@sharkscrapper what have you found to be the most economical way to ship to them? I haven’t shipped anything yet. Just stock piling till it’s worth shipping certain things. Luckily I have a yard 30 mins from me (Utah Metal Works) that buys boards for a decent price, but the smaller, more valuable cherry pick items I’ll either process or send to Boardsort someday. I have an IT guy that hooks me up with a dozen or so computers and eWaste every month or two to keep me busy. Thanks
@@dr.a006 I have a biz account with FEDEX that gives me a good discount on the larger boxes. I also use Pirate Ship for either UPS or USPS. They have very good discounts.
The gold finger strip boards from monitors don't produce much gold. If you just toss the finger strips in with your ram fingers, you'll find that most of it will not come off.. You need to treat the finger strips in a hot bath of Lye to remove the "glue" that is adhering to the fingers, otherwise the gold will just sit there.. You can cut off the gold circles from the boards, it won't produce large foils, but will still make small "sparkles" in your acid. You'll eventually figure this out when you start processing your own scrap. Eventually you'll have to get your feet wet and go out to Home Depot or Lowes and buy your first gallon of acid. Walmart has the best source of Peroxide..

You're smart, you can figure it out. Just take it a little at a time. It took me years of watching and learning then many more of hands on experience before I recorded my first video. You have the advantage of Bob and I hear to help.
Ic's are also any chip with 6 legs or more. Razor knife works well on fkat pack's also. To many containers Lol. That board you are working on i would just rtemove the tantulams & gold bga and sell the rest for perphilal. Great video.
Thanks Mike. Good point on the 6 legs I forgot to mention that, thank you. If I lived within driving distance of Boardsort, or similar buyer, I would absolutely do the same thing. Unfortunately for me, I have to factor in shipping which means I lose money shipping peripheral boards unless I'm filling space in a box with a lot of high paying boards. Fortunately for me, my yard is kind of flexible in what they call "high grade" vs "mid-grade" to my advantage. The value of a good long standing relationship - something you know and do extremely well.

I've seen a few i960 processors on boards, but don't know their value. Also they are not pocketed. Is this a separate category of processer or does it go as ceramic or fiber?
As you know some i960's are ceramic and some are plastic. Not being socket mounted further adds to the complication of the grouping. I treat the plastic ones as flat packs if I remove them. I avoid removing the ceramic ones seeking upgraded board value instead. However, on the rare occasion I do remove them I put them in with those ceramic CPU's the most closely resemble depending on their condition after removal.

A very important question Jonathan. If you are going to sell to BOARDSORT.COM I recommend you NOT depopulate the boards. Depopulating risks lowering the grading of the board for sale. You can remove socket mounted IC's and jumpers if you want to but otherwise, just leave the boards as is for maximum sale value.
Check out Boardsort's forum. I have spent a lot of time going through the old posts and discussions on how to grade/identify boards. Lots of very useful information there. If you have a question about how a board should be classified, email a picture to Chris. He's very good at getting back to you.
I appreciate the eagerness to learn. Unfortunately, my insurance company is very particular about me having people in the Shark Cage. But I'm always available via email and in the comments.

Strong the gold force is... Unless you're serious about committing to gold recovery, and that means a lot research and investment in safety equipment, gear and chemicals, I wouldn't go down the depopulation that path.

@@poosmate hey Poo, I've seen other channels associated with recovery of precious metal, gold and silver say the transistors may contain small or trace amounts of gold. When I first got started in microscrapping I was doing what most others do, go after the obvious precious and non ferrous. I've seen and heard stories that the display screens may have rare earth metals. I no longer take "chances" I remove everything I can. Everything has its own container, with the exception of tin shred, I hoard everything. It's like Ewaste Ben said "scrap for today money, hoard for tomorrow money"
seems time consuming my thoughts either an interesting hobby or you like doing it dont see a lot of return value in this or maybe I am wrong *its a like👍Au👍and a full watch too*
Billy - for me this is a hobby with passion that helps to pay for itself. It can be time consuming, especially if one does a lot of board picking. ROI is very dependent on each scrapper's situation. I like it as a hobby because it pays for itself and is good for the planet.

Jay, where are you? If you don't have any place to sell your boards your options include recovering what you can (gold, silver, copper, etc) from components or NOT do ewaste. Copper and aluminum are easy to get from the boards. Gold, silver, platinum, etc require much more work and dangerous acids. Plus you need to collect a lot of feed stock material.
@@sharkscrapper I'm in Ontario canada, yeah I take off all that good stuff but I'm not sure what to do with what's left. I've been throwing it into shred after I take off the aluminum, copper, gold stuff, crystals... but could never find a place to sell the boards to after that
24:46. You are corrrect. you should leave this chip on your board. It has NO gold in it. it's called a flip-chip and has no bonding wires in it. Technically it has no value. I don't understand why anyone would put value on it. Just for curiosity I dismantled a few a while back and even dissolved all the metals out of it. There was absolutely no gold in it. so-- don't waste your time people!

i watched all video an i was suprised how easily you cut that board with scissors like tools..
thank you - those scissors were designed to cut sheet tin and aluminum siding, so they are pretty tough.

Hi Donnie I'd be interested to know what yours is too. I watched a video last night about 3 legged transistors and about how they can generate a small amount of electricity. I get very excited when I find one small thing can do something, makes me wonder, what can lots of small things do? Take care, Poo
@@poosmate hey Poo, I've seen other channels associated with recovery of precious metal, gold and silver say the transistors may contain small or trace amounts of gold. When I first got started in microscrapping I was doing what most others do, go after the obvious precious and non ferrous. I've seen and heard stories that the display screens may have rare earth metals. I no longer take "chances" I remove everything I can. Everything has its own container, with the exception of tin shred, I hoard everything. It's like Ewaste Ben said "scrap for today money, hoard for tomorrow money"

Billy - for me this is a hobby with passion that helps to pay for itself. It can be time consuming, especially if one does a lot of board picking. ROI is very dependent on each scrapper's situation. I like it as a hobby because it pays for itself and is good for the planet.
how long have you been doing this? you have a lot of material.. I have no where close to that... Also, i don't have a place to sell boards, Can i just take everything off of them? or is that a waste of time?
Jay, where are you? If you don't have any place to sell your boards your options include recovering what you can (gold, silver, copper, etc) from components or NOT do ewaste. Copper and aluminum are easy to get from the boards. Gold, silver, platinum, etc require much more work and dangerous acids. Plus you need to collect a lot of feed stock material.
@@sharkscrapper I'm in Ontario canada, yeah I take off all that good stuff but I'm not sure what to do with what's left. I've been throwing it into shred after I take off the aluminum, copper, gold stuff, crystals... but could never find a place to sell the boards to after that
24:46. You are corrrect. you should leave this chip on your board. It has NO gold in it. it's called a flip-chip and has no bonding wires in it. Technically it has no value. I don't understand why anyone would put value on it. Just for curiosity I dismantled a few a while back and even dissolved all the metals out of it. There was absolutely no gold in it. so-- don't waste your time people!
