How Madonna didn’t win - or even get nominated for - an Oscar for Evita is just… I have no words. All these major awards organizations have truly done her dirty. The Grammys! The fact that they flat out refused to acknowledge aaany of her work for the first 17 years of her career is outrageous. I understand she was controversial and they didn’t want to seem to legitimize her but she was outselling and out-performing all of her peers and they just… snubbed her. It’s awful. True Blue was the top-selling album of 1986. She should have started winning Grammys then. In the end, tho, she hasn’t needed them. She’s still THE best-selling female recording artist of all time AND the top-grossing female touring act in history. Madonna may not have the Grammys and the Oscars but she has something rarer - she has records that belong to her and her alone.
Madonna has won 7 Grammy awards, that's more than most artists. More than Elton John, Billy Joel, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Britney, Christina, Cher etc.
She got Grammy nominations in the 80s and 90s, she just didn't win until 1999 (except for Long Form Video a few years previously). So she WAS recognized. I think her first Grammy nom was in 1986 for the 1985 single Crazy for You. I don't think awards are important. I think it's the work itself and the impact and legacy that matter.
Evita is currently my favorite Madonna era. She looked so beautiful in the movie and in all the interviews. She even looks younger than in previous years (Erotica, Blond Ambition, etc.). Wearing classy yet sexy outfits really suits her. I would have loved a 1997 tour focused on Evita and Bedtime Stories songs sung with her new voice.
Please, react to Jann - "Promise" (Chillizet Live Session) He is a talented polish artist with a rare voice - countertenor. Jann writes all his songs and lyrics. Thank you!
Not sure what Oprah was talking about because Madonna did many longer interviews - with Kurt Loder on MTV, with Jane Pauley in the 80s, etc. Maybe she meant with a live audience? But she did Letterman and refused to leave haha. Anyway, I don't mind Oprah but you'll probably like the Ray of Light era interview better. And she performs! Glad we're back to the ROL era. You're going to get the full impact now, since it followed the STR/Evita era, which was rather tame. Many of us thought she would continue in this vein, with ballads and movies - the next Barbra Streisand. But as always, she shocked everyone by coming back with one of her best, most daring albums/eras. Can't wait for you to watch all the videos and interviews!
Ohhh yeah she has! Not Oprah gaslighting us haha! Yesss so keen to go back into ROL now knowing what I know, so insane that we've come full circle to this point!
19:26 In Madonna's "Evita diaries" she wrote for Vanity Fair during the release of the film, she said the first time she felt the baby kicked was when she was filming this scene. As she was marching.
I am so happy that you're Ma-journey is back again! Oh it's so good enjoying your M journey. It makes me remember the time and feeling the same emotions. Such great times musically coming very soon. ❤❤
I swear. The HYSTERIA at the time and the media coverage about Madonna being pregnant and giving birth, you would think she was the first woman to have ever had a child. It was crazy.
I enjoyed Oprah's interview when it came out and thought Madonna revealed what most people wanted to hear -- her new experience as a mother, her child, her current relationship, and what was next in her career. Oprah had 20 million viewers at the time of the interview, so it was great exposure for Madonna. Oprah is a legend as is Madonna, in their respective fields.
The thing you have to realize about media in that day is that everyone often asked the same or similar questions because not every interview was accessible to everyone like it is now with the internet and RUclips. If she is asked a question by an interviewer from a local news station in Buffalo, NY, that answer will ONLY be heard by people watching in the town of Buffalo, NY. Fans in Miami, FL or Mexico or Australia will never see that interview because that interviewer doesn't have an audience that is beyond their local station. Oprah, on the other hand, was a program that was watched by nearly half the population of the US every day and furthermore by an international audience. It's one of the reasons why Oprah is Oprah and her interviews are so renowned... she's not particularly good at interviewing people but you cannot understate the impact of an Oprah interview because everyone will watch it.
hello, there are these videos that are prettier and more interesting Madonna - Making of Evita (MTV The Big Picture) Madonna press conference after Evita screening at Directors Guild in Los Angeles, Dec 10, 1996
I have to say interviews were really different in the 80's and 90's. Like this interviewer asking if she thought of having a abortion. As a viewer, we did not even think this was odd. I think there was a shift when Diana died in 1997 or a shift started. I have been a Madonna fan my whole life. I have seen her in concert 4 times starting back to 1987. I own all her music but strange thing is I never saw Evita. I just was not interested and still not. I watched Madonna's 80's movies as a teen but really wasn't interested in her acting. I see Madonna and all I see is Madonna. I just can't get out of that head space and see her as any character. The thing about this period of time is she took voice lessons for Evita and it changed her voice. A lot of fans break up her career pre evita and post evita. She was never again as she was with her projects. She was really pushing buttons and really did calm down. MAybe it's having children or getting older. Now she's gotten back to being a bit out there. He's getting to Ray Of Light. That really was a incredible album. Frozen and The Power Of Godd-bye are amazing.
Ugh that Oprah interview. 🤮 But I enjoyed that Rosie interview! Hadn't seen either of these. Definitely not my favourite era (i dont like the film, and the soundtrack is bottom place in my Madonna rankings) but i enjoyed some of the other clips and interviews i hadn't seen. Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor were the ONLY 2 celebrities speaking out publicly during the AIDS crisis in support and raising awareness and money. They were champions and ringleaders for the cause. No one else DARED touch it for fear of cancellation. For this, they will always be recognised by the LGBTQ community and held dearly in our hearts. Whenever I mention Madonna in that capacity, I never fail to mention Liz at the same time. All those that came after, when it was safe to get on the bandwagon... Gaga, etc were so far after the fact as to be inconsequential.
I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not a big fan of her Rosie appearances. They're so rehearsed and silly. I get that that was Rosie's brand at the time, but they have a long, meaningful friendship and I would have loved a more serious conversation between them. The 1998 appearance with the "trivia" audience game and yoga was kind of insufferable to me. 😬
So wild that Liz's history just isn't really known now, or maybe it is and I"m just ignorant haha, but I really just haven't heard anything about her growing up which is sad!
@FindingMadonna yes this is definitely better than that other Rosie appearance you mentioned. I like goofy relaxed madonna whom we so rarely see, and loved her singing the 3 little duckies song!
@bennshouts I think unlike Marilyn Monroe, once Liz died her image and legacy sort of faded. The last time I remember hearing about her was 2012 with the abominable Lindsay Lohan film "Liz and Dick". There's also a 2013 film "Burton and Taylor" starring Helena Bonham Carter (I just discovered on google). Elizabeth Taylor was the most famous woman in the world, with stunning violet eyes. As big a child star as Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. And as big an adult star as Marilyn Monroe. She was married 8 times! Won Best Actress oscar twice. In 1987 she was the first celebrity ever to release their own fragrance - Passion, and then White Diamonds, which are still big sellers. She was beloved as a child star, and classy as an adult star. She famously starred as Cleopatra in 1963, a film so famously expensive and over budget it nearly bankrupted the studio, caused production to shut down on all other films (including Marilyn's final unfinished film which possibly contributed to her death). Liz was paid one million dollars for that role, making her the highest paid actress in Hollywood at that time. I think Liz's final film was in 1994's The Flinstones as Fred's mother-in-law. This film also had Rosie O'Donnell as Betty! Liz agreed to be in the film if the NYC and DC premieres would be AIDS benefits and she/they raised $330,000. She died in 2011. Nutshell: so while Madonna was affected by the death of her friends in New York in the music and arts scene, due to AIDS, Liz was experiencing the same in Hollywood with her closeted actor friends.
She’s an annoying twat, that constantly sounds like she’s reading quotes, and banging her tambourine, while sounding so righteous. Plus she talks over people. Some of the reasons I don’t like her.
I was thinking the same thing. She has been a big supporter of the gay community since day one. She is Honest, caring & loving person. Madonna herself loves Oprah. This guy has no clue who Oprah is, & to say she has a corrupt history, he should check his facts!!
Madonna saying Elizabeth Taylor is the most golden of stars but she didn’t shout her out in the Vogue rap. Lol. Yah, her speech about Diana was brilliant. It turned the narrative onto the public who absolutely was partly responsible for what happened, as was Diana for courting that fame and manipulating the media. If I remember, she was the first person who really said that, which of course was uncomfortable for many to her, but I 100% agree with her. It’s all related… fame is so dangerous. I don’t understand why anyone would want that life. Okay, the money would be nice, but the lack of privacy, people saying anything they want about you, the constant scrutiny and judgement, both positive and negative. It must do terrible things to your psyche.

More Majourney soon purrrleeease!! 🙏🙏🙏
just a fun fact, Madonna holds the world record for the most costume changes in a single film.
Iconic!
Yeeesssss for revisiting Ray of light album ❤
Madonna & Rosie are the best together
I absolutely love this era. She slayed! and she was robbed of an Oscar nomination

Omg yes!

why do you hate oprah? What did she do to you?
Nothing personally, but she has a pretty corrupt history haha
I dont vibe with things she’s done
