I went to the LA premier of EVITA and I met Madonna. I was 17 at the time. Also the song You Must Love Me won best song at the Oscar’s Don’t Cry For me was not nominated because it’s from the original stage production of the play. The Alan Parker film had a You Must Love Me which was made for the film. Madonna won best actress at the Golden Globes and her winning should have been in this pack of videos.
The backstory on Streisand was that she was also overlooked for an Oscar nomination for the movie “The Mirror has 2 Faces” which she directed and starred in - but she declined to sing the movie’s song “I finally found someone” and instead asked Natalie Cole to sing it. Natalie got sick last minute so Celine Dion stepped in last minute to sing it but Barbara was notoriously in the bathroom during the performance. When Billy Crystal introduced Celine, he thanked her for stepping in last minute. So the introduction to Madonna as a “class act” , followed by the camera panning to Streisand was not about Madonna but Billy throwing some shade at Barbara - who clearly got the point.
thanks so much for this-I've had the audiobook since it came out, but other stuff has gotten more important (like slamming the door in the face of the narc in my life-oversharing, sorry!!!) listening to her now-even just talking she is healing my soul 🤗🤗
Totally agree….“Lament” from the Re-Invention Tour and “You Must Love Me / Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from the Sticky & Sweet Tour are not only essential live performances of songs from Evita, they rank among the best live performances of Madonna’s entire career….
I'm Argentinian, she's our favourite female recording artist of all time! We adore her! She re-recorded the vocals for the Don't cry... remix, even in spanish for the Miami Spanglish Version of the remix.
It’s wild looking back at this era bc it’s a bridge Btwn the first wave of her stardom and the 2nd. 1998s Ray of Light was earth shatteringly epic, critically acclaimed like she had never been before and reinvigorated her pop career in a way she hadn’t been looked at since the Vogue era. It brought the casual fans back.
The balcony scene lasted for three consecutive nights, and during the bus scene, I was there too she sings "Hello Buenos Aires" the old city was recreated in a large park in Buenos Aires Madonna was really nice She wasn’t a bitch at all maybe because she was pregnant lol
You Must Love was actually the only song composed specifically for the movie version of the musical, so it could get an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. It got the nomination and that's why Madonna performed it at the Oscars. Don't Cry was the big hit though.
it also won the Oscar for Best song. this is the second song performed by Madonna from a move that would win the oscar. the other was Sooner or Later from Dick Tracey.
Benny baby getting all emotional and making me emotional cause it’s such a thrill to see how in touch with her you are. Can you imagine what we get like when we see her latest show and here her sing things like Bad Girl and Mother & Father. I think we can say you’re officially a true Madonna fan. Love you man, and your honest reactions. xTx
The story will the Guilty by Association cover is that a stalker called Robert Hoskins broke into her L.A. garden. He was arrested and the case went to court. M was served a summons to appear as a witness. She said that she would not attend court because that would just give him what he wanted. To be in the same room as her. The judge said that if she didn't attend court then she would be arrested. She appeared as a witness and because she was so upset afterwards her sister Melanie said that she was to come to her house. Joe Henry told her the song he was covering just reflected what she had been through. While she was still reeling from her court appearance he put her in the studio and recorded her. ❤❤
Ben, I know you have someone else pulling what you react to for Madonna, but, please react to the Oprah Interview from the Evita release. She is the only hour long guest and Madonna is at her most open, funny and forthcoming. You need to watch the whole interview without edits, maybe in two videos? You absolutely don’t want to skip it.❤😊
The fact that this made you cry warms my heart. I literally bawled when I first saw this on TV, the sheer power of this was incredible. I cried watching you cry.
Her accepting that Billboard award, just wow. It is in my opinion one of the most moving award acceptance speeches she has made. The audience was in tears and so am I, so am I I’m telling you. That recap at the beginning I’m sure brought so much memories, her music has been such a big part of so many people’s lives that no wonder they had tears in their eyes. I consider her and her music as part of my history, part of me growing up. And I guess that is the case with a lot of people who were in that audience that night. So emotional and on point. And, when you had tears in your eyes, that was it. Cried like a baby here.
Cool video. Joe Henry is still her brother in law. He wrote a few songs with her through the years, including Don't Tell Me (from the "Music" album) and Jump (from Confessions on a Dancefloor) - both released as singles.
There are some great montage remixes out there but I guess you need to wait till you're done with the Majourney so no spoilers! BTW I believe Madonna re-recorded the vocals for Don't Cry for Me expecially for the remix and it was a big hit in the clubs.
NO GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS??? RYYYYAAAAN!! Every time! 🤣 The film won three Golden Globes, including Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), Best Actress, and Best Song. As others have already mentioned, Billy was saying that Madonna herself was snubbed for Best Actress at the Oscars. The film itself was nominated for Best Song, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, and Art Direction. Not too shabby, but M definitely deserved a nomination. She probably would have gotten one today, but they were much more conservative back then. The film was a moderate success at the box office, so I think she and the studio were pretty happy. It was a tough sell in 1996, but it revived her acting career... of course, she squandered that with terrible film choices and then quit acting altogether. Chicago was going to happen with M as Roxie but it fell through. Womp, womp.
Every “era” is under an hour for me to fit stuff in when I send it to Benn. Patience is required. Each section of her career has many hours of content. I won’t get everything but just because one mini era does not have something does not mean it is not coming. For me to complete one total era of Madonna in a single month would cost me $400-$500. I can’t afford to do that. Patience please.
You Must Love Me was nominated and won the Oscar for best song. DCFMA couldn’t be nominated as it wasn’t an original piece of music in that only YMLM had been specifically written for the film . Great reaction.
I was born a few months after the musical w Madonna debuted in theaters so my parents named me after it, but I still somehow have never seen it. A bit ago I listened to a few songs from the soundtrack and it was unexpectedly SO emotionally moving, I went from a totally normal mood to bawling my eyes. Ive only met two other people w my name so it feels like a very intimate connection
You must love me won Oscar for best song. The evita soundtrack sold 7 million albums worldwide. Don’t cry for me Argentina peaked at no.8 in the USA and no.9 in Australia mostly due to the Miami mix which was played on the radio. You must love me peaked at no.18 in the USA and no.11 in Australia
1996 and she had already an unique and great career and she was already the queen of pop...and still glorious and wonderful eras had to come!!! ray of light, music, american life, confessions...stunning!
I'm very surprised that Ryan did not include Another Suitcase in Another Hall and Buenos Aires for you in this lineup! BAires I can kinda forgive because they ummed and ahhed for so long that it never got out of promo status, but ASIAHall was a proper single release! Both had music videos (and imo they are the best two tracks from the ST/album!).
You have to listen to the dance remix of Don’t cry for me Argentina. It is fire. I remember dancing like a crazy with all the gays when the dj played it. She re-recorded her vocals for this version and it has a lot of tango influence on it.
Joe Henry is still her brother in law. He’s married to her sister Melanie. They worked together again in the song “Don’t Tell Me” from the Music album and the song “Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You” from the Hard Candy. Joe & Melanie have a some together named Levon. Levon is also a folk musician. You did a reaction video to an interview during the Something to Remember era where she talks about escaping to her sisters house and watching dinosaur movies with her sisters son. Levon Henry is who she was talking about.
Ben love you back on this thanks, I enjoy you discovering through fresh ears & generational difference. So enjoyed Garbage also could not wait for Milk reaction! You may also enjoy The Cranberries & Shakespeare’s Sister - hey even Betty Boo Madonna tried signing her to her label. Thanks
If you think you're copping flack from the naysayers now, you should've heard what 'they' were saying if you were a true fan in 1984-85! Some people are just deaf and blind 😊

"You must love me" did win the Oscar for best original song in 1997 (and a Golden Globe)
And Madonna got the Golden Globe for best actress !!! xx

I own both the dress Madonna wore in Evita and the shirt Heath Ledger wore in Brokeback Mountain.
