I’ve always lived by the phrase “it’s not the tool that makes the artist, it’s what the artist makes with the tool.”
Yeah but when ur starting off it helps to have the right tools
@@Rdeschain19 exactly, you are already limited by your lack of skill you don't need to have limiting tools as well
@@somethingcreativeprobably5160or get over ur fear of failure
@@somethingcreativeprobably5160 if youre already limited by skill you probably shouldnt spend hundreds on expensive tools that you cant use or feel bad about using because of its price :p dont sprint before you can walk, keep to cheap tools
@@Rdeschain19you do need to have some sense of what you’re doing though before investing in some high quality tools though.
I thought this channel is for drawing only, I was wrong and delighted!
Proko, Institute of Arts, can you imagine.
We've got drawing, painting, sculpting and more!
Thanks for checking out the videos
If they fr make an actual university, I would work so hard to get into that college 😭 not even joking
I think there’s more on Proko 3D
As kids me and a friend wanted to make people but didn't know how to mix skin tones. So instead we made aligator people. The packs we used always had tons of green so it worked out great. We would sit in front of the tv with a lunch tray and just go to town making alligator families.
Aww that's super wholesome, I love hearing about that 💖
sooo cute. i did a similar thing with little ducks!
growing up my best friend and I did the same thing- making little clay people on a lunch tray! I haven’t thought about that in ages, thanks for the reminder 🥰
Sounds like the friends I wish I had
@@mixedmediaartgirl300 Same buddy, I feel that sentence so hard
I would never have thought to see "pâte à modeler" used seriously for sculpting! But that's such a great idea.
this is legit, i've found it at dollar tree before :)))
Same!!
They used to give them out as a prize at my elementry school 😂 I was wondering why I was hit with a wave of nostalgia when he whipped them out
I’ve been buying these since I was four atleast, I have 3 packs in my room right now.
yes!!!! and its actually some of the best clay ive purchased of the modeling/colorful kinds! 🎉🎉🎉
I used to use clay like that all the time as a kid! Sculpting hundreds of tiny colourful ponies built my muscle memory lol. Thanks for showing it can be used for advanced things, I'd never thought of that!
I remember as a kid me and my brothers would always make the power rangers first when we got this clay, i want to do it again since we are teenagers now :]
Keep up the good work
Thanks for the tip!
now i really wanna see you sculpt with some of those super vibrant and strong colors!
YES! I have no idea why dont many people do this too!
Thank you very much for this, it helped me a lot and I hope it helps everyone else too
Andrew Joseph Keith is the goat of sculpting tips 100%
I've been missing working with clay. Good to know I can do so for a lot cheaper than what I was using
Absolutely beautiful sculptures 😊
I personally like different colored clays, idk, it just helps my brain organize and place things I guess?
Same! Especially the scented ones! I used to have this fruit/candy scented clay set when I was a kid. It took every bit of self control I had not to eat it!
Reminder that they used to regularly paint the roman statues back when rome was still roman owned
Beautiful
Remove green, dark blue, purple, and black 👍
Awesome! 😍
I get this at dollar tree and i love them! I paint with clay, because I have arthritis in my hands, i can no longer sculpt but i can paint and i use backs of plates as my canvas.
THAT IS LITERALLY THE CLAY I USE IN MY VIDS
fr. i use crayola air dray clay. yk that clay that’s more foam like? that. i love working w clay but i have a lot of problems w it. i hate the drying on my hands and getting under my nails so that ruled out regular ceramic sculpting clay. polymer clays were my go to. but it’s hard to find a good one. the price is either ungodly, it’s hard to work with, it’s oven bake, non drying, or i just don’t like it for whatever reason. i found one clay i loved that was perfect. but i couldn’t use it because it was non drying. so now i use the crayola foamy stuff. the only problem being that it’s. well. foam like. it behaves very differently.
Is there a way to keep the sculpture from being distorted when you’re done? If it’s non-drying, will it be easily damaged or can you cure it somehow? Thank you so much 😊
This won't be a long term option for sculptures. You can make a mold and cast of it to keep it long-term, though.
@@ProkoTV what do you make the mold out of? Plaster or do you use anything else? Thanks
@@philipferreira422 Perhaps alginate?
It's mostly for practice or for stop motion films, so it's not supposed to hold its shape. It kinda hardens in cold weather so you CAN put it in the freezer to hold its shape, but obviously it'll soften again once it warms up.
@@philipferreira422 There's a whole video about it over on Proko3D. We can't share clickable links in Shorts comments or descriptions.
But you can find it at proko.com/762 or search "molds" on Proko3D
I got that exact same stuff and mixed all the colors. Too dark so I mixed it with white to make a light gray color
Literally, dollar store clay, i used to stock it lol
But how do you keep your sculptures?? It's modeling clay, so it doesn't solidify or bake
You're not intended to keep these. This is for practicing or prototyping something.
But if you really like something you sculpt with it, you can make a mold of it to cast a permanent version from.
We have videos about this on the Proko3D channel
Art has no rules
Was there something in this video that laid out "rules"?
Is that a rule?
@@AndrewJosephKeith 😂
What version of zbrush is this?
😂
Could you teach us forshortening
We can't link videos in Shorts comments or descriptions but we have several lessons on foreshortening in the channel!
Come on over!
Damn I wish I know this when I was mucking around with Chavant NSP... 😅
Both are good options!
French clay spotted‼️
How do you find so many amazing artists????
I want a deep muted purple goddess statue omg
Ahhhh I can smell the petroleum-scented nostalgia coming from this video!
nice
But what is that professional muted clay you used?
He uses a bunch of different clays but Chavant NSP medium is Andrew's most commonly used in videos.
I dont ubderstand, will it actually last after its baked? Or is this for exercise purposes only?
So you then make a mold of the non-drying clay?
If you want to make something more permanent, yep!
But not all sculpting is done to make something permanent.
Do pro sculptors really use non-drying clay?
Absolutely. There are tons of different applications of sculpting. Some of those are done in non-drying clays.
Not every sculpture is meant to be made to last forever.
ahhh good to know was just curious @@ProkoTV
Yes absolutely. They usually mold and cast their work in bronze or other materials and a non drying clay is ideal for that. It also allows for working on projects over longer periods of time than water based clays.
can we get a link to where we can buy it for $1? I've been wanting to get into sculpting but I'm poor, so this would be much appreciated.
This one is from Dollar Tree. Links don't work in Shorts comments.
sorry i meant in the description @@ProkoTV 🤘
@@Donnie_Oculus Also can't link there. Same thing.
RUclips rolled that change out to stop fraudulent activities on Shorts a while back.
ahhhh darn thats a pain, i didnt know that. appreciate the info!@@ProkoTV
@@Donnie_Oculus Yeah, it really makes pointing people to the longer videos a lot harder :[ Hope you're able to find that on a dollar tree website or something!
What if u use varying colors to project more depth or angles almost like shadows, or would that look bad since it’s already a 3d art piece
You nailed it. Imagine chiseling into an Gobstopper. Those in er later colors don't mean as much for describing complex form and depth and just having that complex form and depth that light can play off of.
Nice
Why not wear shades that mute the color of the sculpture so YOU as the sculpture can focus on the form but have a product with vibrant colors too?
The form of the sculpture is what needs to be muted. It's about how the light and shadow play against those colors.
Think of how you see body builders get that spray tan kind of look for competition. It reveals the plane changes very nicely.
@@ProkoTV sorry. My capitalist brain couldn't fathom wanting to focus on the art and went to "what would make this way more sellable no matter how gimmicky?"
I just have a question. Do you bake this clay?
Definitely not. This is clay meant to be reused.
If you want to create a permanent copy of what you sculpted with it, you can make a mold and cast from it.
@@ProkoTV true but don't you hate that what you make isn't permanent, or do you always cast?
@@JessieNihilist That's not a limitation of this clay. It being constantly malleable is its strength.
If we want something that will hold its shape, we just use a different clay!
This is for practice or for someone who's working on a piece over a very long period.
You just use the right tool for the right job.
But can you make a Sonichu Medallion out of it???
Oh gosh, I thought for a second that the voice was a Ranboo AI QwQ
Ranboo ai 😂
@@nightmareHS Literally, I thought it was one of those AI voices- XD There are some people who use Jschlatts voice for example and let them voice these kinds of videos. It's horrible to hear qwq
@@luan3431 mhm
Plasticine also stays in good condition for decades! you can keep using the same piece for your whole life
Exactly!
Can you sculpt with the bright colors as a demonstration? Having trouble visualizing it since I don't typically work eith clay.
You can see more of the experiments in different clays, including the wax from Babybel cheese, over on the @Proko3D channel
What's the brand
It's the generic modelling clay sold at Dollar Tree
@@ProkoTV thanks
What about consistency? Is there a way to obtain a similar one with cheap clay?
That's what this is about. The clay would be worthless if it were an awful consistency.
This is a great value option for reusable clay.
@@ProkoTV which brands would you recommend for a similar consistency?
@@jameswolf1811 The one Andrew's working with here comes from Dollar Tree. We don't have a comprehensive test of the different brands of less expensive clays.
@@ProkoTV ok, I understand. Gonna try that brand. Thanks
I just watched a vid about how m1 abrams works but why is this in my recomended-
❤❤❤❤❤
If it doesn't dry, then how do you preserve it?
You can make molds to cast from. But the purpose of this is for study and practice.
If you're looking to make something that will last forever, you use materials that are made for the quality and purpose of that use.
where do I get the brown clay?
You'll have to get the more expensive clay from an art supply store, in person or online. The brand Andrew uses is Chavant NSP.
Aa for the rest of the clay shown, that's from Dollar Tree.
Just so yall know you dont have to be boring(or use boring colors) just because youre an adult.
It's described on this video that there's an actual use for the muted colors.
This isn't doing it just because.
Idk how is it in the us, but where i live sculpture clay is way more cheap than the colourful ones
How much cheaper? You can get the colorful clay for a dollar so I would be surprised if it can get cheaper
Is it available in India with consent price
Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of whether Dollar Tree is present in India. I'd imagine not, though.
Wow
I saw it at the dollar store but thought it was gonna be bad clay
It's better than it seems!
modeling clay never really dries or hardens so it isnt the best choice if you want pieces to last. polymer clay is the way to go.
Yep! This isn't for making something that's intended to last.
If someone were looking to make something that last a long time, we hope they'd go for something a little more archival than dollar store clays.
thats the point
Did you watch the video? Or just rush to the comments to act like a know it all
@@guhrizzlybaire youre a lil bit slow i see
That ear though...I hear ya.
I got that for Christmas( I do pottery in school and wanted to mess around at home) and thought it was cheap rubbish. Glad to know it's not
Hey man where can I buy bulk clay? I’m sorry but I see those little kits for like twenty bucks and I just can’t help but think they’re too small for what I’m trying to study. Judging by the sizes of some of your pieces it looks like you definitely don’t just use those little packs so where do you get your clay?
That is absolutely just a bunch of those little packs, mixed together. That's the point of this video.
These came from Dollar Tree, in case that helps you to try to find them online somewhere you can purchase from.
@@ProkoTV I stand corrected. I’ll go see if they have those packs, thank you.
@@captainquakespeare75 Hope you're able to get what you're looking for!
Wait was that a Lenin buste??
Definitely not.
@@ProkoTV aw too bad! Amazing skill though!
❤
There are legends who always end up mixing all colors of clay and they get big black color.
Edit : omg 😮 i wish my channel was also as famous as this comment 😅
You cant mix black with clay
They're not far off, though. Comparatively, the result does look pretty close to black for most purposes. Andrew calls it a "charcoal" color.
You can see that in the full video
ruclips.net/video/UsVSwnTsNNs/видео.htmlsi=REexuPqe-ABHMKAn
It does get pretty dang dark when it's all mixed together!
@@ProkoTV the purple looks really good
you got 30 likes there’s normally more people in a room than that relax
Was that Pep?
?
@@ProkoTV the sculpture with the goatee looked like Pep Guardiola 😂
Yeah but just because it's the same colour doesn't make it better. I'd argue if you have less quality why sacrifice the colour? If I paint my Weiner black it's not going to get bigger
Andrew tested several types of inexpensive materials, even some waxes. When testing this particular clay, he felt that the cost to quality was great, even compared to his expensive clays.
With sculpting quality there, the next step was to make it viable in the other ways that the expensive clays are. That includes getting it to a neutral color that best shows the form of the sculpture. That's the process outlined here.
This type of color does actually show the plane changes of a sculpture more readily. It's the same reason you'll see fair skinned bodybuilders get that spray tan look at competitions. That being said, we also agree that painting your junk won't impact its performance.
appreciate the straight up answer@@ProkoTV
Im not a fan of dull colors because all my traditional art of people have weird colors that make no sense as theire skin or eyes and stuff
What's your motivation for sculpting?
Me: oh nothing 😏 im not planning to create weird something buehehehe
Hot take, sculpting is subtractive process, not additive. Needs different name!
Depends on what types of sculpture you're making! There's sculpting like this when you're building things up by definition and then there's sculpting where you're carving an image out of stone.
Yess daddy
I like colors. I will continue to paint my sculptures no matter what you say.
Meanwhile that same clay i used to have: *Breaks*
Nah, nah, no. You see, this is how they get ya. It’s actually just chocolate that they got from Walmart.
Make a waifu maybe rias gremory
interesting :)
I bet your whole house is muted colours. What a bland and boring life, I’d be so depressed without colours
Dang, dude. He says why the colors being muted is a good thing. It shows the form in a greater way, the thing he's working hard to pull out of the sculpture.
That doesn't have to extend to what color his couch is or anything lol
I think it's stolen
Andre didn't steal the clay and the video links to our other channel, Proko3D.
Nothing stolen here!
