Wonderfully informative video Victor, thank you so much for sharing. You have inspired me to make the leap and add gong to my sound meditation repertoire! Now to decide which gong! Blessings and gratitude.
Great vid, thanks, hey , you mentioned a "zero impact mallet" and played with it for a minute, curious I have searched for such under that name and can't find anything, is there a different name for that? Brand/ Manuf. ? Ive recently got a Paiste Mars 32" and exploring.
@@Gongtopia nice. We’ll that explains why I couldn’t “find “ it anywhere. No hits on a “zero impact gong mallet” Can you suggest anything close that one could find to purchase?
Really nice video. Thank you. I'm also a sound enthusiastic. I love gongs for all the frequency combinations that it's possible to make and ear. I have a 30cm gong but now I was looking for a bigger one. Around 30" or 32" gong. I love the sound of flumies and want to ask you what are the main differences between the earth gong and others, like a normal symphonic gong? Thanks in advance
LOL, just saw your other gong video, and said, if you're thinking of spending maybe thousands of dollars DON'T just buy one online without seeing it! I suggested Vic's, because they have every damn thing in the store. and here they all are...hahaha
If by 'Wuhan tan' you mean a Chau or Wind Gong, they can be fine. I have a lot of Wuhan/Chinese Gongs that I use. They have a very different sound than a Paiste, which is good. I like to use different types of sounds in my set ups.
@@Gongtopia they are much cheaper. The paiste/mein are a lot moreexpensive. Are they worth the price they cost? Or a tam-tam gong ( I guess tam-tam and Chau are two names for the same thing) has a good quality too? thanks
@@guidofaria6721 To me, it's all about the sound and whether you like it and can work with it. It’s also about thinking of a Gong as an investment that can last your lifetime. The good thing about Paiste & Meinl is that they are very consistent. You can listen to 10 different 28” Symphonic Gongs and they will all sound almost identical, so you can just order one and know what it will sound like. With Chinese Gongs, if you have 10 different Gongs of the same size, you will have 10 very different sounding Gongs. It’s best if you can try out and hand pick Chinese Gongs, so you can find one that speaks to you.
mark lewis - An important question. I usually don’t wear ear protection with the gongs, as I don’t play that loudly. If I am in a rare situation where I have to play loudly I will use ear protection. I also do almost anytime I play drums or am in an amplified music situation.
Nice clinic! Only wish your voice was louder . . . I was trying to listen early in the morning and with the volume up to hear your voice . . . suddenly the sound of the title inserts or your performance would come booming/crashing in and I was worried I would wake someone up! ;-)
Yes, the voice could be louder. But if you look, this video is over 10 years old. It was a clinic where I thought they would have a mic and a sound system-but they didn't. I recorded it anyway and at least there is this. Today's technology may allow me to actually remix the audio and bring the voice level up, but I don't have the time, as I'm too busy making new videos. Maybe someday. It would be nice…
This video is so classic and essential. You are a great teacher!
Thank you so very much for such an informative and excellent clinic. You've changed the way I compose.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and got some useful information. Thanks for watching!
Thank you. Really informative. Always learning.

Those are mallets that I made myself. I often make or modify mallets to get specific sounds I hear in my head, or in this case, to not hear sounds.

I love your creativity, could watch you muffling for hours
Gongtopia. The utopia where all gongs live in harmony.
I’m interested with your Zero Impact mallet. May I know how to get it?
I only made a few pair for myself and never produced them commercially.

What would you recommend to mic gongs
Been struggling a little
I just finished shooting a video addressing your question. Watch for it next week.

Nice
Incredibly informative video, thanks for posting. What size is that largest Chau gong (upper left inside the rack)? Thank you.
Upper left inside is a 32" Paiste Symphonic Gong. It's my main gong.
I am legally deaf and like music like anyone else. This video is totally awesome 👍👍👍😎
Why i love gongs?

Thank you for such nice class. So clarifying. One question: what are your thoughts on the wuhan tan gongs? the seem to be a lot more affordable.

when,if ever,do you use hearing protection?..or do you,..just let it vibrate 'through' you?

Get yourself a nice head mic......... you need it! You can't compete with the gong. : )
