Not music that is easily classified, but it is altogether a great sound. And, as always, Mary is a virtuoso both as singer and instrumentalist. There is so much here to hear. And to like.

Mary is a really talented banjo picker and singer. She should be better known than she is
I like this 3 piece band format. There's the bass to hold the house down. Then somebody else holds the fort while the bass gets to do its business. It's a perpetual motion device. But not without Percussion.

Mary, I love the video!!! And I really like the idea of an extended ballad connected over multiple songs where each song is like the next chapter in the continuing story - I think this is the third chapter, right? I'm not aware of any other artist who's even thought of that, but then you are an original! I love it! 🥰
Penelope Rose, Rose Tattoo, Penny La Rue, and Captain La Rue from Death and the maiden... Whats the deep lore here?!
@@raywharton9425 I think Capt LaRue is just another use of the name, no relation to the lady with the Rose Tattoo. Penny LaRue was the first chapter, introducing the "Louisiana bad girl". In the second chapter, Mary sings from the perspective of a woman who's boyfriend is taken in by the lady with the Rose Tattoo, who takes him to the bad part of town. Mary's character then tries to find him and finds him in some seedy joint just in time to see him murdered by stabbing. Of course, the song ends with Mary "standing on a curb with a cop named Herb" (don't you just love how she finds the lyrics to rhyme?) Trying to explain what happened. The third chapter (Penelope Rose) finds an investigator who's never lost a case trying to crack down the criminal. As a Mean Mary fan who loves her music, in case you didn't know, Mary and her mom Jean have written several murder mystery novels (available in the store link on her website). So, our multi-talented Mary is also a published book author, so extended story-telling is her thing. I love her ballads because they are complex and the furthest thing from simple-minded that you will ever find. Her Rose Tattoo songs have been years apart, but I suspect there will be future installments as the current one is clearly not the last. Penny LaRue has much to worry about because our detective has never lost a case yet. Also, being a Christian, Mary never lets her bad guy characters get away with their crimes.
Marty Robbins sort of does it with El Paso and Feleena, and Mary has the same lyrical genius 😀

Your previous video with this song had a definite country (dare I say bluegrass?) feel to it. I wasn't expecting this more rockin' imagining, with the strong percussion, funky back-beat and mixed-in vocals - but I'm really digging it!
