    An advantage of having a smaller lens/sensor on the iphone is that you can use cheap plastic aspherical lenses that allow great image quality without adding too much complexity, something not really possible with the big lenses of the sony as plastic is lossy and won't work so well for thick lenses. You're then restricted to spherical glass lenses and optical aberrations are then compensated by adding more individual lenses, each also causing 8% loss of light. The iphone image processing is probably better too. Of course the Sony will really shine when you add up specialized lenses for portrait, telephoto or macro shots.

  • @MaximoJoshua
    @MaximoJoshua Месяц назад +28

    it's called Apple Log, not ProRes Log
    This is important, because using Black Magic Camera App, you can record in h.265 (codec) in Apple Log (color profile), which means you get smaller file sizes.
    Using Black Magic Camera App, you also have the ability to use preview LUT's with the option of burning them in right away, meaning you may not even need to grade in post (but you also lose the ability to adjust the look).
    You could also choose any of the different flavors of ProRes, HQ, LT, Proxy or regular.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  Месяц назад +3

      Well said and thanks for that explanation. I’ll make sure to update my vernacular in the future. With that said, will you be preordering the ZV-E10II ?

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua Месяц назад +4

      @@thefilmalliance no, I agree with a lot of what you said, but I feel like if you are going to upgrade from iPhone, why not go to full frame with the ZV-E1 or the LUMIX S5II? I agree that the zv-e10 II probably has a higher ceiling than the iPhone, I think that is obvious, but if the point of upgrading, and spending money on a dedicated camera is to get a bigger sensor, why not get the better sensor? The other thing, which really skews the value, is that like 80% of American youth already are gonna get an iPhone, so its not really that they would spend the money on this phone OR a camera, but rather, its the phone they are already gonna get, so would they get an iPhone AND the zv-e10 II? Probably not, save up a bit more, learn more about photography and videography, and then when you really want to dive into the hobby or maybe make it your profession, I would then just dive into full frame. I just wouldn’t start with aps-c in 2024, if you really wanna buy a professional, dedicated camera.

    • @shinoMusic
      @shinoMusic 7 дней назад

      @@MaximoJoshua thats just such an ignorant take of someone corrupted by all the youtuber non-sense. Aps-C is 100% fine for 90% of work, even professional. Not to mention most people can not afford equivalent the kind of glass that makes FF worth it. Not to mention all the added bulk and weight.

    • @MaximoJoshua
      @MaximoJoshua 7 дней назад

      @@shinoMusic So, let me get this straight, if someone said "hey man, you want a camera for free? choose between the ZV-E10 II or the ZV-E1, you are going to choose the ZV-E10II?
      get out of here. if you like aps-c, good for you, don't say it's better than FF, especially for vloggers, where you will need like a 16mm lens to get an arms length shot.
      All things being equal, the FF sensor is better than the APS-C sensor.

    • @mathewluke5081
      @mathewluke5081 5 дней назад +1

      @@MaximoJoshua I would take apsc over fullframe any day . jk 😂
      But each sensor has got its own value.
      Some cine cameras are crop sensored but still offer a good performance than fullframe sensor
      Even Bmpcc 4k for example ,
      That camera with Mft sensor is still far better choice for a filmaker
      It hasn't got allthe bells and whistles of modern mirrorless camera , but if a user knows how to operate it and grade that footage
      Remember at the end of the day it's not the camera but the person behind it. I won't say specs don't matter but specs never made a film or content by itself.😅

    The best review videos hands down. A few thoughts:
    1. Most consumers will never need interchangeable lens bodies. They’re large and bulky and will minimize incentive to use
    2. Using BM in iPhone with Apple log, h265 files, and a good NLE or dehancer will look nearly as good as a mirrorless body.
    3. Most people watch content on their phones, some TV, less projectors. Hobbyists and prosumer candidates viewers will almost never know the difference.
    People need to consider this and stop spending $1000s maybe get a pocket 3 if wanted in addition to phone.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  Месяц назад +5

      Brilliant analysis.
      1. I do think some people would prefer to have an actual camera in their hands rather than a smartphone. When I have an actual camera in my hands, I want to create, whereas my phone could distract me.
      2. I love the idea of the BM app and have used it extensively, and I agree with everything you said. The BM app seems to crash on me constantly. With a few more upgrades, it will be a lot more stable, but it's not stable enough for me to go out and actually use it in a real use-case scenario.
      3. I like the point about most people watching on their phones, and this is especially important for people who are so fixed on resolution and frame rate.
      Thanks for your thoughtful comment and feedback.

    A few details gave the iPhone away. Some grainy footage on low light and the lens flares when pointing at the sun or other light sources. Not saying it was super easy to identify but those details did stand out which helped me identify the devices correctly. The iPhone 15 has impressive video quality and if the budget is limited and you need both a great phone and a great camera, the iPhone 15 Pro is a no brainer.

    As I debate getting a mirrorless camera, I currently use a DSLR, iPhone 14 Pro and GoPro 11 for my vids and pics. As you outline, the phone has so many advantages from a handiness perspective. Size, weight, cost, screen size, multiple built-in lenses etc. And yet larger camera sensors are supposed to provide much better quality imagery.
    The comparisons shown in this video seem to show darker, blurrier images from the Sony. The iPhone as I understand it, uses software to produce imagery that provides overall greater dynamic range than many cameras. This is why video from iPhones seems to be brighter and more ‘well lit’ from shadow to highlight areas. Cameras are better for making blurry bokeh, high speed shooting for sports and wildlife, long telephoto work and low light footage but not certain there are that many more advantages.
    Anyhow this was a great video. Really enjoyed your analysis.

    Great video. One advice I would like to offer is that while shooting with iPhone, so many times I wanted to look something up or google something, only to realize my phone is preoccupied with a shot! I cannot interrupt its shot or cannot just take it off its mount! Need to ask someone else to google or message someone! I realize how often I needed to use my phone as a resource while shooting. Another reason to have a dedicated shooter and phone as a secondary shooter.

  • @fotosvond_

    I'll share some thoughts in this department as well.
    Many people criticize the E-10 Mk II for the lack of IBIS, however on my A7R III there is 5,5 stop IBIS and the outcome in handheld video as soon as you move isn't great too. When walking, it is very difficult to get it usable for post-stabilization. What you said - using a gimbal - is for sure the best option in terms of maintaining IQ.
    I'll throw in something else, nevertheless. If it is for private pursoses (more or less documentary "vlog style"), I would consider getting the Xperia 1 VI and using S-Cinetone in combination with an E-10 II. Gives you great stability, nearly no postprocessing and you get footage that looks million times more natural than any iPhone can give you. ZV-E10 II can be used for photos and stationary video where you won't move around a lot. Or you can use the kit lens for walking shots in combination with a strap around your neck to minimize movements. Let's be real, the kit isn't optical gold, but it's good enough to beat a smartphone. And for the artistic shots, you can get one of these fancy 1.4 or 1.2 lenses (Sigma 23, Viltrox 27). That will be night and day in comparison with any of these ugly computational smartphone cameras. In fact, the 27/1.2 by Viltrox is a lens that makes APS-C very attractive because optically good lenses for full frame are quite expensive.

    I would pay $5,000 for apple to slam their 15 promax tech into a G7x body, flip up screen, fit in pocket and not awkward to hold / vlog like an iphone while having the canon onboard mic and retaining the apple stabilization tech.
    That build would legit takeover the vlogging space and there would never need to be another camera made.
    I bought an A6700 today with a 16-35 and it sucks because the stabilization when walking around and vlogging is no where NEAR as good as the 15 pro max. Even with stabilization on “max” on the sony. Have to return it because its just so hard to go back to that awful stabilization when the iphone is legit flawless while producing that kind of image in 4k 60
    iPhone for vlogging 100% which is sad to admit but if you have ANY recommendations shoot me a comment back!

    Why not use the Blackmagic Camera App instead of the Final Cut app? It makes the iPhone much more powerful as a video camera and is used by Apple themselves. I understand wanting to be as stock as possible, but to me it's one of the great benefits of having a phone (access to the App Store), but the Final Cut app was designed more for its Multicam functionality anyways. Really, if you are doing real video work you need a proper camera that is only for being a camera, it can't be interrupted by anything etc etc.
    The iPhone 15 Pro is a great backup camera to have and you need a phone so make it a flag ship that does good video and you have a camera you always have with you that will do.
    If you are planning out shoot and scenes then you'll of course plan to bring a proper camera.
    It is however how we have goon to being able to use a phone for professional video at all.
    Real cameras will always be a step ahead, considering a full frame out does a APC camera, a phone will always be a step down again... but that it's even able to bat it outstanding.
    If you are making content then a iPhone is more than enough to hone your skills before it's worth adding to your gear.
    Your ability will always outweigh the quality you can get over what a camera will offer so it's actually beneficial to limit yourself to a iPhone to begin with.
    Get things coming out good on that and you'll be good enough to warrant starting to get up grades.
    You will get much better video with a iPhone VS a Full-Frame high spec camera if a long practicing professional uses a iPhone and a amateur uses the Full-Frame high spec camera.
    Then again, if you have the money and the time to invest because you are that passionate have had many ideas with different lens and can get that entire setup, go for it, just remember it will take a while until you hone your skills.
    If you can afford that then you can also afford to also have a iPhone Pro as a camera you always have on you.

If I started to make money on that channel to where I could comfortably buy a camera, then I would consider it. But it’s absolutely not necessary to buy one. I subscribe to a lot of good, successful channels (Dankpods for instance) who choose to use a smartphone because it’s easier to use, saves money, and you don’t have to use up all your time and energy trying to learn how to properly use a camera. Great review! I watched the a6700 vs the 15 pro a few days ago. It’s seems the zv e10ii is a better competitor then a6700 in this kind of test.

      Great analysis, it’s been a while since I’ve watched that video. I’ll have to go back and watch again thanks for that. Which camera did you end up liking more? the ZV-E10II or the iPhone 15 Pro ?
