    I love this. Like many of your videos, a great example of elements that set OSR style play apart, particularly B/X and its descendants.
    I have found the procedural nature of dungeon exploration on OSE, as much as its brutal danger, to be a great help in transitioning players from heroic TTRPGs to OSR as well as make game play more efficient at the table. Diligent time keeping, clear goals, tasks to reach those goals, risks associated, and well defined methods for mitigating or enduring consequences help make decision making simple, if not always easy, as shown in this video.
    Some claim the procedural rules reduce the game to a board game, but the critical element is player skill and environmental description- the dialog between player and DM. There is no such flexibility in a board game, and therefore less emotional investment from the player.
    Thank you for your time, work, and generosity. Your content is far more helpful and educational than your contemporaries, in my experience.

      This is a perfect description of what makes OSR such a great experience. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I love doing this, but comments like yours absolutely make it worth the time and I humbly thank you for the kind words.

      @@PlayinRPGs When we were young, things like comic books and RPGs and computers were niche, secret, special things. Sometimes I miss that, but the internet/Pandora's Box, while it has made those things more mainstream, also allows us to discover that we are not alone. That is a good feeling, too. And arguably more potent.

    Loving this style of video man, I don't usually see videos on X,Y,Z topic and then ALSO cite examples of how they did X,Y,Z with actual footage for a session. Keep em comin, definitely interesting!

    Really enjoying your videos and the behind-the-scenes commentary. If you haven't already you should read the original B/X rules that OSE is cloned from, it explains a lot of little details of the old school way of play. Keep it up, great job!

      Yes, I havent looked at it super closely but I do like the samples of play they have. Not sure why they did not include those in OSE because those details are very helpful.

    As gm I like to roll searching, listening etc. rolls for players as it tends to focus players on the description of what their characters are doing. Too often when players roll these they tend to focus on the mechanics.

      That's a good point! I've been thinking about making that adjustment in my games.

    You can of course rule whatever you want (as one does), but the x in 6 roll is defined as x or less on a d6. In the Classic Fanatsy Characters book page 6 for example.

      That's right. The players like the roulette vibe tho, oftentimes to their detriment. I always say they can "roll low" but almost invariably they call the numbers. Hubris?

    1 in 6 chance to detect a trap seems wildly low odds!!??

    • @PlayinRPGs
      @PlayinRPGs  Месяц назад

      @@Ozblock1 very low odds, that I think can be mitigated by being somewhat of specific in the way they approach the possible trap. If they are "looking" in their roleplay descriptions at specific things, I tend to give them more info, n maybe increase the roll odds. If they just approach a door and roll for search traps its 1 in 6 (and a turn spent!)

      Ahhh I see that makes more sense! Thanks for clarifying!
