  • Downtime is the secret fourth pillar of DND but it is an understudied, overlooked, and often-avoided part of the game. This video explores why downtime is essential to a long-running campaign of DND - particularly old school DND like OSE (B/X) - and presents gameplay with GM commentary to demonstrate what happens during this mysterious, amorphous, flim-flammy part of a game.

I play in a pretty huge AD&D 1e sandbox style campaign where we make frequent use of downtime. We also use 1:1 time.
Downtime is super important for doing things like training for leveling, investigating rumors or leads, recovering from battle, looking for henchmen, and even building stuff like a guild hall and an aviary for hippogriffs.
The main issue I see with it is that it makes the DM quite busy! They have to not only deal with all the world building and dungeons, etc, but also follow up on everything we are doing as we send messages throughout the week.

Yep. That hippogriff aviary isn't going to build itself!

For us old timers, downtime (or between time) is good for healing, training, experimentation, and research. Down some hit points? Need to rest and recuperate. Want to bump a level? Gotta train, assuming you have someone local to train you. Want that new armor? Sorry don't have your size on the rack, I gotta make it. Researching new spells? Time and Materials required. I have never done 1:1 time as it just doesn't work for me since I have always played just once a week and the 6 days of elapsed time just does not work with the time scales of my in game world. Easier to hand wave time passed during downtime after canvasing the players as to what they want to accomplish while back in town.
