Volvo introduces the XC40 Recharge, the company’s first ever fully electric SUV and the first model to appear in its brand new Recharge car line concept.
The Volvo XC40 Recharge, based on the multi-award-winning and best-selling XC40 small SUV, is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. It represents a true milestone for Volvo Cars: the company’s first electric car and the first Volvo with a brand new infotainment system powered by Google’s Android operating system.
Over the next five years, Volvo Cars will launch a fully electric car every year, as it seeks to make all-electric cars 50% of global sales by 2025, with the rest hybrids. Recharge will be the overarching name for all chargeable Volvos with a fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain.
From early 2020 customers entering the Volvo Cars website will first be asked whether they want a Volvo Recharge car or not. To further encourage electric driving, every Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid model will come with free electricity for a year, provided through a refund for the average electricity cost during that period.
“We have said this several times before: for Volvo Cars, the future is electric,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive. “Today we take a major new step in that direction with the launch of our fully electric XC40 and the Recharge car line.”
The XC40 Recharge is everything customers expect from a Volvo, with the addition of a state-of-the-art, fully electric all-wheel drive powertrain that offers a range of over 400 km (WLTP) on a single charge and output of 408hp. The battery charges to 80 % of its capacity in 40 mins on a fast-charger system.
The Android-powered infotainment system is fully integrated with Volvo On Call, the company’s digital connected services platform. Via Volvo On Call plug-in hybrid drivers can track how much time they spend driving on electric power.
To meet the anticipated growth in demand for its Recharge cars, Volvo Cars will triple production capacity for electrified cars and will as of next year prepare a Designer’s Choice selection of popular Recharge models, offering the potential for radically reduced delivery times. Volvo Cars aims for plug-in hybrid cars to make up 20 per cent of total sales in 2020.
Every Volvo model in the range includes a Recharge option, from the small XC40 SUV via the 60 Series cars to the company’s flagship, the large XC90 SUV. Volvo Cars is the only car maker to offer a plug-in variant on every model in its line-up.
The XC40 Recharge and the Recharge car line are also tangible proof points of the company’s ambitious new action plan, also launched today, which represents concrete actions in line with the Paris climate agreement and supports Volvo Cars’ ambition to become a climate-neutral company by 2040. Sorry but I am not in the mood to buy a Chinese car these days no matter where it is made. A tesla will be just fine.
They talk like its Funeral Speach
Volvo needs to focus on Range.
You definitely beat Tesla on looks, quality, comfort , luxury and safety. I love the fact that Volvo’s are one of less than handful cars in the world that don’t rust.
I you can raise the range by additional 80 miles, you get my $$$.
It’s good to have a variety of electric cars to choose from
More inovation More money invested in research
@@CHMichael This is a real suv, not a cross over like the rest.
This isn't a review, it's an ad🤣
It’s a launch video...made by the OEM...what were you expecting? (Scratching head emoji)
Frank Partida what were you expecting?? NOT a misleading title
Its hard to make rewiew of a car wish isnt out yet.
I’m interested in purchasing this once I see the price tag and this was exactly the information I needed. So it serves the purpose
@@ub4079 Fair enough 👌
Google assistant is a major selling point it works better than a lot of other assistants. This looks like a promising EV.
Yeah, seamless integration of all smarthome features in your car. Soon I can tell my microwave to preheat my car. Awesome future
this car looks sooo beautiful even with the closed grill..perfect suv
I can’t even afford it but I can’t wait for it to come out 😂
😅🤣😅... Don't worry about it. You can at least rent it & enjoy it for about 3 or 4 days. I literally do it all the time on my birthday. I'm 43 years old and I've been driving new rental cars all my life 😅
This vehicle is on my short list! Thank you.
Beautiful car 😍 Volvo is killing it
shut up and take my money

Honestly, the Google assistant in the car speaks more natural than these presenters
This is like my brand new washer machine... But with wheels xD Love it!!!
3:12 excuse me?! Are we just gonna gloss over this neat little innovation?! I want that!!!!
What an infomercial. As an owner of a 2018 XC90 AWD (D5 engine), I have been hoping that Volvo would come out with something to take my eye off the Tesla Model Y I am considering. This car doesn't cut it, and who knows when they'll have an EV version of say, the XC60 at a decent price and good range. Right now, the XC40 EV comes with a range at least 100km LESS than the Model Y, at probably the same price category. Why on earth would anyone buy the XC40 then? I ask this as a current Volvo owner looking to stay within the brand, not as a troll.
Depends on what is important to you. Tesla’s build quality is still not up to the rest of existing suppliers and a lot of the features are beta, service centres are sparse and it’s difficult to speak to anyone. Volvo is known to you. If you want to be on the edge of technology then Tesla is for you but don’t think you will be without issues.
@@scottwills4698 I agree and disagree, You are right about Tesla after sale service, but You are wrong about Volvo, they not the best and sometimes challenging to, this is my personal experience with Volvo as an owner, in the UK at least
Low mileage range & not nearly enough charging stations.
Let’s get real, there are very few reasons to pick XC40 over Model Y. You are more likely to get more consistent quality of paint job and body gaps with a Volvo, but beyond that XC40 Recharge is a smaller, heavier, slower, clumsier, lower range vehicle riding on modified ICE platform.
@@migueloliva4953 There are enough CA where I live and the amount of stations is increasing with a bit of planning even right now it will be fine. Look into Rivian if you have the $$$ they have a pick up truck and an SUV arriving end of 2020 plus a little corona slow down that has batteries that range to 400 miles on a charge.
"Sure, turning off 243 lights."
"Sure, turning off $3,000 worth of light bulbs."
6:50 "Much improved experience." Oh my god that laggy scrolling. Lol
Beautiful design! I will definitely look into this electric SUV later this year.
Huge Volvo fan!!!!! ♥️
She's like the car, very sophisticated. Volvo designer must be from the future.
Great! Thanks for asking my Google assistance to turned off my home lights.
Presenter - “How’s traffic to work?”
Me - What work?
An Electric Volvo!!!!! oh yes !!!!
Impressed. Watching from Bangladesh 🇧🇩.
not my definition of a "detailed review" ... more like a commercial/infomercial. I want to see it driven. I want to see cons as well as pros. I want to see tests done of its range in cold and warm weather, at various speeds. I'm also not sold on this heavy emphasis on using voice commands; many people don't like using voice commands at all (me included), for various reasons (interrupts conversations in car or on phone; interrupts music; voice recognition is never perfect, and often really poor; and it's just plain easier to reach for an easy button or dial). And, this move by Volvo away from buttons and dials to putting way too much in the computer screen is just horrible from a safety perspective, undermining Volvo's long mantra about their making safe cars; voice control should never be a substitute for knobs, dials, buttons for important things that the driver uses a lot (climate, audio). Volvo, please explain why you're insisting on going down this unsafe road -- to somebody who's owned Volvos continuously since 1985 but is re-thinking Volvo because of these horrendous buttons-to-infotainment screen safety lapses.
They are copying all the other EV (especially Tesla) out there. New for Volvo, not for the market.
When the car is watching out for itself, you have the time and attention to use the highly intuitive Android infotainment system. Knob and button address entry into the Nav takes too long. I personally hate button and knob festooned interiors.
They eliminated the start button by simply requiring you sit in the seat and press the brake pedal. They've made a simple procedure even simpler. Brilliant.
But what about self-driving capabilities?
You can be electric, have high performance, look aesthetic, safe etc, but if you don’t have self driving capabilities, Tesla will still be the superior car.
It has self driving capability, more advanced than the standard gas powered XC40 but that’s all that I’ve seen officially stated.
2022 all Volvos will have Lidar or autonomous driving.
Tesla self-driving? yeah, after they solve the computer vision quest, which will be 20..58?
Tesla superior because it drives itself? FFS save your money and call a cab! Some people enjoy driving. I have zero interest in a car that drives itself.
I live in a place that the temperature will drop to -20C in the winter. Will the coldness reduce the battery power?
I am in love with you volvo
Thats a brilliant ride you guys have created.
More power to you guys
Why can't my country talk English without talking like we're on stilts.

Yeah !!! I made my deposit to be sure to have one....
Great SUV for Boston... Go Volvo Electric go... Go XC40 Recharge... cool video ... Go Volvo go.
I like it , Volvo is my dream car
I see a lot of my '19 Volvo XC-90 T6 Inscription with the tech package in that XC-40, and that's a good thing. Way to go Volvo !!!
Nice car, and going with Google was a smart choice. I'm glad Volvo is getting serious about EVs, but much shorter range, no supercharging infrastructure, and no autopilot, still keeps it far behind the Model Y.
Volvo's autonomous features are near identical to "autopilot" as far as I can tell, except it won't change lanes for you. But I agree on the charging infrastructure, that's a big downside.
@@digitalmop I have to disagree. I would call Volvo's driver assist semi-autonomous at best as it still feels like a reactive system instead of a proactive system when comparing how smooth it's detection is compared to a Tesla. And it's easy to understand why when comparing the sheer computing power of their respective onboard computers and the fact that Tesla has a substantial lead in terms of the amount of data it has gathered and can gather via it's neural network (autopilot data gathered from the full fleet of Tesla vehicles in real time), to feed into the autopilot's machine learning, and push incremental improvements at a much faster rate as a result.
Beyond that, Tesla can do things Volvo simply can't because of the aforementioned reasons. Such as changing lanes on it's own like you mentioned, but also taking on-ramps and off-ramps, and very soon stopping for lights and signs (it can already detect them).
I also have a big problem with the way Volvo cancels it's driver assist if the driver ignores it's input warnings where it will simply cancel the driver assist outright. This is not only bad design but it can be dangerous under the wrong circumstances. Tesla on the other hand will turn on hazard lights and slow down to a stop.
It really comes down to the fact that Teslas are built with future full-autonomy in mind, Volvos are not.
Wow, they integrated the starting key in the bottom of the driver 😂
So, this is an add the talks about "experience" with all monotone speakers...LMAO
And I thought I am the only one - they are zombies
A pure beauty. Love it 😍
Presentation is too good with clearly. Thanks for both.
This is a fantastic Tesla Model Y competitor like the Mustang Mach-E and Nissan Ariya (When it’s sold outside of Japan). The only thing missing is an actually fast and convenient charging experience like Tesla’s V3 Superchargers. Volvo, I’m impressed.
Beautiful and nicer interior than Y. But no chance this suv will come even close to Y. Tesla has gone far with technology and performance and reliability. Glad we have a variety now
Tesla safety features are no whr close to a volvo.
Jack Ryder yes. Definitely Volvo can’t be as bad as Tesla build quality. Because, it’s Volvo ;)
@David Moore well, I was referring to build in soft platform and engineering behind that. Which every ev manufacturer is struggling including Jaguar and recently vw put their production on hold due to major software glitches.
reliability?!
The Volvo steering wheel won’t come off in your hands, for one thing.
My dream car. Can’t wait to own it.
I liked the presentation by everyone nice and calm .
You set my Google Home Assistant off not once but thrice! Love the car, cannot wait for the XC60 to be electrified and as a Polestar edition, would be too cool...
Was pretty cool of Robyn's aunt to give us a tour of the XC40 Recharge
Only a matter of time, people loose confidence on Volvo cars. Once an epitome of Swedish craftsmanship, Safety and comfort, now in the hands of Chinese. God knows what’s inside!!
Wow great all rounder! Desirable!
Volvo expenses: Car development - 300M USD, video presentation - 5k USD, presenters for the video - FREE (go and force the more depressive employees we already have transmit their deep sadness to our customers and by the way let them make the speech)
Very nice Volvo! Android eco system, OTA, etc.etc.. a step in the right direction.
Exciting car I love it, Sorry to add that it is super unprofessional to "Hey Google" in a video, everyone else knows that triggers the google home setup for those who are watching :-(
Excellent video review of the Volvo XC40 Recharge. All of the English Speaking was very clear and understandable. The details and features of the Volvo XC40 are excellent. This vehicle motivates you to strive for the future.
How did she bend down in those Heels 🤯
"Ready to fight the Model Y?" Still don't get it, I see. What they're "fighting" are gas powered SUV's; not other electrics.
Tesla safety features are no whr close to a volvo.
@@HSQ-International That's just not true... Tesla is keeping up, and the Model X is the first SUV to get a perfect crash test score. Not a Tesla fan, just stating the facts
@@HSQ-International That would be real ten years ago, but now if it comes to safety Tesla is the leader.
And I drive Volvo daily
HSQ International this car specifically, would be just as reliable as Tesla, and maybe only slightly more. Tesla scores high on safety not because of the innovation type stuff that Volvo does, but because of the basic principle that the electric motors can do significantly less damage to the frame of the vehicle in the event of an impact when compared to a traditional engine block.
@@HSQ-International Tesla is safer than Volvo. In last 10 years many car makers have surpassed Volvo. Plus, Volvo has no soul.
This woman speaks like she also gets plugged in to recharge every day. Robot city.
INTRODUCING LUXURY CAR - WEARING SILK SHIRT IS THE HIGHEST LEVEL!
It's definitely better than tesla model Y
Top speed. Racing vs batlles, off Road test. Crash test, tow Challenger. Show car make hard work.
Great to see many Tesla standard features arrive in competitor vehicles.
I wouldn't buy Tesla stocks anymore ;-). The competition will beat Tesla within two years on two points: price and build quality (probably not combined in one car though). Still, you have to hand it to them: they were the first.
@@nirodha35 That's like telling people they shouldn't had bought Apple stocks after Samsung released its first Galaxy smartphone in 2009. For the year 2019, Apple had only ~13.2% of the global smartphone market, but Apple's market cap is still higher than market caps of other top four smartphone manufacturers combined.
nirodha35 You Realise VW admitted to being a full decade behind Tesla Tech right?
@@nirodha35 yea that was a pretty stupid statement I'm sorry lol....especially the stock comment what planet are you currently on.
You're just jelly because you know this will is the Tesla Killer.
It looks so amazing. But how reliable/durable/versatile/capable will it be? Also, I know weight is an issue but, if it had a spare tire instead of the fix a flat kit then it'd be close to perfect for what I'm looking for.
Please advise Volvo to install a more modern 12" screen....Paul
Built without compromise. Xc40 towing 2100kg down to 1500kg.....
How is that not a compromise.
If you insist on lying to us. Do a better job of it.
Beautiful looking car. Definitely on the list for a test drive.
Probarbly the best mass market EV in the world!
2 months and this car is on my driveway. My father offered him
What did he offer him?!
@@David-zx8fc silver, and some extra options
Excellent narration
I love my XC40! I wish this Recharge wasn't $10k over a loaded gas XC40. Plus, when are the new S40 and V40 cars coming out?
In Norway you can get one for $10k less than a fully loaded gas XC40. Electric cars are subsidized by the government. No VAT, almost no road tax, cheap parking..the list of exemptoins and benifits is long!
New electric veichle comes out!
Everyone: tESla kILeR
They should really get real people to promote this car instead of bots, I know lots of friendly Swedes.
Fantastic car I’ll wait for the xc90 recharge
Bravo Volvo 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I am sold, happily!
Welcome in the world electirc Volvo car
Si que es ...futurista. aunque por dentro le falta algo!!! En sus comandos ( tecnologia ).
I love volvo the boxy cars from before and there new vehicules , i have a v60 cross country 2017 and it is an amazing car ! Volvo is elegant and not arogant like some brands its differtent its part of your life ...
Haha this has ex machina vibes.
Красивые самодостаточные автомобили Вольво . С любовью из солнечной россии fox
Volvo is great but seeing these commentators made me think that this company has no future. It is a great technology she is speaking about but I felt really sorry about the car somehow...
The best safety car,
Screen is too short but the overall look is great
It’s a pity it won’t include Apple CarPlay!
Love Google UI but wish the screen was bigger
I think the screen is large, but just like android auto, everything is just too big. My dad has android auto and I have Ford Sync with similar screen sizes and on his android auto, when we use maps, everything is just jumbo sized. It's quite annoying. This version of Android is called Android Automotive.
the biggest test for this XC40 will be battery efficiency , 78 kWh pack. Does it actually deliver claims for 400km, how efficient is it compared to Model Y LR which has a slightly smaller pack.
Any real tests this can actually do 260 miles in good conditions and not heavy right food?
We know polestar 2 does not meet it's stated range and it is pretty weak on efficiency (it is thirsty on electricity)
Well thanks. My google assistant went mad
I will have this
Everything looks good, now, let's see the price!!!!
InfinityOrchid on the road price is £53155.
It's going to be about $55,000 in the US.
@@dc656 There are also rebates still available in some states.

What is the space beside the frunk used for?
it's my favourite car
I LOVE VOLVO BECAUSE IT'S SAFE. MY DREAM WILL BE REAL ONE DAY
I was watching this on my Android phone! When the guy said... "Hey Google"! My Google assistant suddenly appeared. Hahahaha!
Yeah I know how you feel. I have the same issue with Alexa.
After Elon Musk came out as a crazy man, I'd rather give Volvo my money for what seems like a far superior product.
Looks great. But need more options than google. CarPlay?
Volvo should increase the range by 30% and it can compete with Tesla Model Y
@@effbeeaye was pricing for XC40 recharge released?
my questions are when will it be out in the United States, how much will it cost, will they be able to improve the battery performance and is it maintenance-free like a Tesla? I'm in the market for a Tesla model Y in about 4 months. I would rather this if it has the same benefits as the Model Y.
The Waze in this Car is yes?
Volo has built some of the best engines the world has ever seen. With that being said that dosen't translate to building the best EV. If they even come close they are benefiting from the shortfalls of Tesla in the past...lol no thanks I'm happy with my superior Model Y. First time EV buyer.
It’s cute. I like it. But the range isn’t enough. Range anxiety is real.
Broderick Adams 400km is anxiety inducing?
Where The heck are you planning on driving?
Who has 15 lights on WHILE AWAY FROM HOME 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And dont forget high quality of the materials and craftsmanship included. It is not like crappy materials and lousy build of Teslas.
Elon Musk : Nice try Volvo :))
Looks good.
Do the said unit have sunroof?
Sunroof is a optional feature
