Come Down In Time - Sting

  • From the album "Two Rooms: Celebrating The Songs Of Elton John & Bernie Taupin"
    In the quiet silent seconds I turned off the light switch
    And I came down to meet you in the half light the moon left
    While a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune
    A mantle of bright light shone down from a room
    Come down in time I still hear her say
    So clear in my ear like it was today
    Come down in time was the message she gave
    Come down in time and I'll meet you half way
    Well I don't know if I should have heard her as yet
    But a true love like hers is a hard love to get
    And I've walked most all the way and I ain't heard her call
    And I'm getting to thinking if she's coming at all
    There are women and women and some hold you tight
    While some leave you counting the stars in the night

    From the very start the piano created the imagery when you are seeing a woman in your mind's eye and the man that is so deep in love with her. Sting follows the lilting chords and tells the story so perfectly written. The captivation of being in love to yearn to have your soul lifted.

      +Doug Sullivan Agree. I knew this from Tumbleweed Connection, but never really got it until I heard this version. I think Elton would agree, he' plays keyboards on this track. Also think the double base part brings it to a whole new level.

      @leiter222 8 лет назад +4

      +Doug Sullivan Absolutely. When you listen to Sting sing it, it's as if his voice rolls over the lyrics of the song as water rolls over sand. Part of it is his voice in this song too. It certainly adds to the depth of the song. Awesome!

      @lilythomson881 7 лет назад +1

      +Doug Sullivan True. Elton has said on more than one occasion that he is not the best singer around.

    • @nickr5213
      @nickr5213 7 лет назад +1

      Lily Thomson I think Elton's voice is a matter of taste. Some people love it, some don't. I seem to be in a minority that loves his older, rich and slightly raspy current voice best. A great songwriter for sure, but I think his greatest achievement is as a pianist. Seriously, I know that film composer Hans Zimmer and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, both worked with Elton, were deeply impressed with his playing, calling him "dangerously brilliant" and "genuinely one of the best pianists of this era." He has so much feeling in his playing and is one of the best improvisers outside of the jazz greats. And I've heard him play literally every type of piano music; classical, jazz, pop, old-fashioned rock, blues, and gospel.

      "Live in Australia" was damn near perfect - I could have done without "Take me to the Pilot" as it just didn't mesh with the rest of the album, but... truly an amazing effort. I love to hop in the car and turn it up loud... just freakin amazing!!!!

    I want to echo what some others have said. Sting really hit it out of the park with his rendition of Elton John's song (and Bennie Taupin's exquisite lyrics.) Going to get into trouble . Bernie & Elton wrote some of the best music around, their was a Soundtrack to a film released in 72 where they wrote the Soundtrack, exceptionally beautiful music "Your song" and this classic with beautiful words and music by both Bernie & Elton John. Stings cover was incredible as was Lani Hall's (Herb Alperts wife). But Elton lost the plot in my opinion in the mid to late 70's with his lifestyle. This is some of his very best.

    Sting does do a better job than Elton, but remember, he had 20+ years to think of how to sing this since he already knew the melody. Elton was cranking out melodies of songs in 20 minutes, then doing a quick run through with the band and recording. I think that counts for something.
