How I Do Water Changes | A Better Method

  • Today's video is all about water changes. I walkthrough my full process for water changes on my five basement aquariums, highlighting a new part of the process - using the Sicce Ultra Zero Pump. I've used the Python Water Change system for a long time, and I've tried a variety of pumps, but the Ultra Zero is the best I've used in terms of ease of use and efficiency.
I highly recommend the Sicce Ultra Zero Pump if you're looking to speed up your process and avoid wasting water. The Python is maybe my most recommended tool for any aquarist. It makes everything a whole lot easier.

Awesome video and thank you for the link to the pump. I was using a different pump attached to another hose. I think I'll get the pump so I only need to lug around one hose to make it that much quicker. Just a helpful tip, I would switch the Seachem Prime for Seachem Safe. It's a concentrated powder that will last you forever. The prime you'll go through much quicker and it can get expensive. I like to keep a bottle of Prime in case of emergency as it will help with ammonia spikes, but if you have a healthy aquarium Safe is a money-saving awesome product.

This is close to what I do. I have a few high-power water pumps that I attach to airline tubing (I have pump bits that range from 1/2 inch to a full inch diameter & bought both 1/2 inch and full inch airline tubing) that I run to my sink. Then to fill, I have an aged water system in my basement made up of six 55 gallon food-grade rainwater barrels with a high-power air pump and heaters keeping the water at 76 degrees Fahrenheit and circulating. I keep one of the high-powered water pumps down there & run the full inch airline tubing from it to my tanks upstairs to fill. I have two 125 gallon tanks (one for goldfish & the other for cichlids with catfish), two 75 gallons (one is an empty quarantine & the other has a single adult blood parrot I had to separate because of bullying - thinking of keeping him in there and picking up ~12 tiger barbs and some bronze corydoras - if it doesn't work out, I can put them in the 125 I pulled the parrot from), and two 10 gallons (one has a single pea puffer and the other is his snail food breeding tank).
I've definitely had a lot of success using this method verses using the python method. For one, it's a helluva lot faster than the python method and doesn't waste any water as you mentioned in the video. Second, I don't have to worry about any not-so-bright fish getting sucked up into the python (I lost a beautiful young goldfish this way, was incredibly upset cuz I'd just gotten her that weekend). Third, with this method it's easier for my fiancé to help me since one of us doesn't have to be watching the sink to make sure the python doesn't fall off the nozzle.
Overall, definitely recommend this method to other fish keepers. Huge game changer :)

Hello Troy, Just wanted to see if you had any advice on getting a clear acrylic aquarium. I got a customized 65 gallon that I started cycling 2 weeks ago. I have 2 Tidal 110 filters, 2 large sponge filters, 2 nice size wave makers and I still have a little cloudiness to it. Not real cloudy but not as clear as it should be. In both filters I have the course sponge, poly fill, purigen, chemi blue, clear X, and matrix w/a few ceramic stones. Please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong. My 55 gallon is crystal clear and i'm just running 1 Tidal 75 with the same filtration as the two 110's, 2 large sponge filters, and 2 smaller wave makers. And I have about 40 fish in there. Almost all Glo Tetras with 2 algae eaters and a super red bristle nose. But that tank stays crystal clear. I do water changes in both at the same time. Water parameters are on point. I don't want to put the Mbunas in the 65 gallon until I get it right. Any advice is truly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Means I dont have to think about pumps running dry and break. Its more adding the water thats so slow. I get around 11 liter per min. And i do around 1500 - 2000 liter change a week, so u can do the math 😐

So in Australia we can’t buy pythons and apparently the US tap screw size doesn’t fit Australian taps. People have tried adaptors and apparently it doesn’t work and the Python leaks badly.
If you didn’t have a Python how would you change water as simply as possible? I’m thinking of buy just the Sicce on Amazon?
