This is about the same tempo of the recordings done of Maple Leaf Rag done back during the first decade of the 20th century. Listen to Vess L. Ossman's recording or the Victor Military Band. The "don't play ragtime fast" came from publisher John Stark, not from Joplin himself.
Thanks Todd, I appreciate the info!
Correct me if iam wrong, i thought scot joplin himself said to not play ragtime fast, bc on the book of joplin rags i got, it says " do not play this piece fast it is never write to play ragtime fast, composer" the pianist plays very well in this video, but too fast, no critism of him, just my humble point, when i play this rag, i play it at a march time tempo, on the score it says tempo di marcia, i imagine in my head people marching, if it was too fast, they would all colide into one another, that is the way i strive to keep the right tempo.
Warnings against playing fast are like "no u-turn" signs -- if it wasn't a good place for one, they wouldn't need a sign.
I love Bobby's embellishments here, and the swung beat. Reminds me of Max Morath.
I taught this piece to a few of my advanced piano students and one student performed it for his Certificate of Merit test here in California and the adjudicator did complain that he played it too fast. Just about every male student who played the piece, played it too fast.
@@tonybmusic1166what was the tempo they played it? I might have been too fast for the taste of the adjudicators, however, it might have been the tempo that comparable to the way it was played back in the day. Maple Leaf Rag is one of Joplin's most pianist rags, as opposed to some of his more lyrical later works. It holds up at almost any tempo.
Hands-down best version I've seen on RUclips. Played the way it was MEANT to be played!!
Oh my god, that audience! Brutal, not even a foot tap or head bob.
@Frank if you can't feel this you are probably dead :) :) :)
It sounded good to me.
But every artist/musician interprets the song to their own tempo.
But this song whether fast or slow is good when it has a beat or rhythm.
On day release from their Home.....
Except for that one guy
@1:02 he definitely looked for a whoop or a cheer
S0 fast, clean and crisp. He knows the Master, Scott.
Sloppy
I've never heard or seen it played at this breathtaking tempo! WOW....what a rendition! He is wonderful!!!!!!

My new favourite performance of this epic tune!
I am deeply impressed by the ease of the "hands and fingers" dancing on the piano keyboard. Daang!! Almost a little jealous.
Finally...it’s played at the best tempo and with the right flare! Excellent!!
Thanks for your comment. There seems to be a lot of people who are stuck thinking music should only be played a certain way. This viewpoint seems to miss one of the most important parts of musical self-expression. Sure, a pure reproduction of an original recording is great to hear, but why draw the line there and say that a piece should not be played any other way?
@@CineDevine you right sir, you right, so fun & snappy 💃 Mad Respect 👍
I respectfully prefer the slower tempo.
Probably the fastest Maple Leaf Rag without screwups
Or so well concealed you didn't notice them ;)
Look up Rod Miller’s version from Disneyland.
@@jeremykiahsobyk102 i thought i was the only one hearing those screw yps
I love this tasteful rendition of the Maple Leaf rag. And the improvisation work here is first rate....and made even better when he added in some percussion and a bass line. Well done!!! :)
There's a talented pianist. That was great.
Of the dozens of versions of Maple Leaf Rag on YourTube, this pianist is in my view far and away the best - light touch, impeccable cadence and rhythm, light and shade in volume.
なんて素晴らしく楽しい演奏なんだろう、本当にすごいです!
We are so greatly blessed to have gifted musicians such as this. The magic effortlesly flows out of his fingers, through the keyboard, and into the ears of the beholders. Great stuff. This man is a musical giant.
Thank you!
Wow, so fast and so fun! The speed definitely adds character in a really nice way.
@@stranraerwal i do appreciate this guy adding dynamics to his playing while playing fast but too fast for my liking
Can't sit still when this Rag is played so well. One of the best interpretations. Flawless.
Namaste and care,
mhikl
très juste.....ce type est formidable
@@RolandWartenberg That one's okay, but _too_ slow -- my preference is for something in between.
Freeless?... It's obvious that you don't know the score because this guy here performs the piece with several harmonic errors, impossible to avoid playing at that speed
Really effortless playing by a very talented pianist
This what being a musician is really all about.
Wow! This rendition is absolutely fantastic - the pianist is truly superb and would be a damn good teacher.
Best ragtime number ever.
Brilliant absolutely brilliant. When I hear this song it always wants me to swing my hips and I’m a big ol’ boy and that’s a lot of hip to be swinging.
THAT'S MY KIND OF MUSIC BABY!MORE, PLEASE MORE!!
Yep, sounds invigorating enough to rid your body of its worn out arms and limbs.
Close eyes and you will dance when rag is played with the irresistible joy heard played here.
Thank you sir for a spectacular rendition.
Cheers!
Great control of dynamics! unusual

これはマジですごい! 左手ここまで自在に弾けるのは相当の修練の賜物だと思います。
This song is beautiful, when Scott Joplin was thinking into write it, probably was so happy, like it a lot. Other I likd is Mexican Serenade, it is totally different because so calm music, try to listen it. Thaks and greetings, jc

Joplin said: NO TOO FAST. Now having said that, you guys are masters, so have at it. Sounds amazing.

super
If you want to hear Joplin’s rags played at the tempo they were meant to be played at listen to Joshua Rifkin’s vids on YTube.
"at the tempo they were meant" seems to be in dispute
Great!!!!!!!!
Meraviglioso!
In effetti è troppo veloce !
Espectacular! Esplendido! Maravillosamente interpretado!!!
Sensacional 👍👍👍
Ese señor tiene el ritmo en la sangre y seguro que su corazón late con la misma armonía.

Have a good day ☺️
