    This is about the same tempo of the recordings done of Maple Leaf Rag done back during the first decade of the 20th century. Listen to Vess L. Ossman's recording or the Victor Military Band. The "don't play ragtime fast" came from publisher John Stark, not from Joplin himself.

      Correct me if iam wrong, i thought scot joplin himself said to not play ragtime fast, bc on the book of joplin rags i got, it says " do not play this piece fast it is never write to play ragtime fast, composer" the pianist plays very well in this video, but too fast, no critism of him, just my humble point, when i play this rag, i play it at a march time tempo, on the score it says tempo di marcia, i imagine in my head people marching, if it was too fast, they would all colide into one another, that is the way i strive to keep the right tempo.

    • @johncip
      @johncip 4 года назад +10

      Warnings against playing fast are like "no u-turn" signs -- if it wasn't a good place for one, they wouldn't need a sign.
      I love Bobby's embellishments here, and the swung beat. Reminds me of Max Morath.

      I taught this piece to a few of my advanced piano students and one student performed it for his Certificate of Merit test here in California and the adjudicator did complain that he played it too fast. Just about every male student who played the piece, played it too fast.

    • @ToddRobbinsnyc
      @ToddRobbinsnyc 4 года назад +2

      @@tonybmusic1166what was the tempo they played it? I might have been too fast for the taste of the adjudicators, however, it might have been the tempo that comparable to the way it was played back in the day. Maple Leaf Rag is one of Joplin's most pianist rags, as opposed to some of his more lyrical later works. It holds up at almost any tempo.

      It sounded good to me.
      But every artist/musician interprets the song to their own tempo.
      But this song whether fast or slow is good when it has a beat or rhythm.

      Thanks for your comment. There seems to be a lot of people who are stuck thinking music should only be played a certain way. This viewpoint seems to miss one of the most important parts of musical self-expression. Sure, a pure reproduction of an original recording is great to hear, but why draw the line there and say that a piece should not be played any other way?
