Binge-watching The West Wing now is my...what's the right term? My palate cleanser? My tonic? My antidote? My escape from current nightmare we can't wake up from? I don't know what to call it, but sometimes it just feels necessary for my sanity. Then I fall in love all over again.

It is really good that we can take from this some hope for the future, even though it is twenty years old. Please everyone vote!!

I find this constant inference that "times were different then" when it comes to sexual harassment very irritating. Men may well have thought that kind of behaviour was fine but the women who lived in those times most certainly did not. Times were not different for women.
CJ was not "ahead of her time", she was of her time. Women have always fought back against sexual harassment, have always found it deeply distressing. What happened in the "past" was that our feelings were ignored, trivialised, belittled. Women who complained about sexual harassment were treated as "boring", told they were wrong. Told that what was sexual harassment was totally fine and they were the ones with the problem. Its only very recently that society has finally acknowledged that sexual harassment is not right. I say this to younger women: imagine what it must have been like to live in a time when women had no choice but to endure constant (and I mean constant) harassment. When sexual harassment was seen as comedy on tv and in films. Yes women still have to put up with harassment but at least now there is an avenue to fight back. When young women complain about harassment it is front and centre on the world stage. People listen to you.
There is a really clear example of this in the tv show NYPD Blue. I rewatched the first and second seasons recently and there is a ongoing theme of sexual harassment but its portrayed as being normal behaviour. In one scene where a male officer has a coffee mug with enormous boobs on it. Its really crass. The female officer objects and says he should take it home. But the tone of the scene is that she is humourless and victimising the poor man - it turns out the mug was a gift from his partner who was shot and killed on duty. It doesn;'t matter if the mug was a gift, there is no reason he can't use it in his own home.
In the film version of MASH the male officers play a "prank" on female officer, Major Houlihan (who they nickname "hotlips"). The men all line up some seats outside the women's shower tent and when they are all assembled, someone pulls a string and the tent walls collapse while she is inside having a shower. She's naked and they are all there laughing hysterically and cheering. The scene is played for comedy and she is shown as some hysteric who complains about them without cause. I remember watching that scene when I was a child and finding it very upsetting. Yet that film won Oscars.

At 3 a.m. when i woke up j would fire up my dvd player and watch 5 or 6 episodes and go back to sleep for an hr or two. It was soothing ro me in an intellectual way. fictional character C.J. really did stand up to the V.P. I am guessing they wish some real life person had stood up to Wm. Clinton when he had so many allegations of being inappropriate(and worse) before the White House, and then again once in the White House.
Loved the show, but didn't like something she said in the interview. How all the people had such a great moral compass, and so willing to listen to others. Yet, this is the group that generally refuse to include Rob Lowe in reunions and specials, now that it's come out Lowe leans right politically.

I wonder if she ever did watch that show from the beginning. She herself is of course marvelous - as for "championing women", however, the whole thing is actually quite horrifying in how blatantly sexist it treats its female characters. Seriously, pick any one episode and try to find a scene where the woman present (if at all included in the conversation) is not being talked down to, admonished, quizzed on her intimate relations or humorously harassed. Great writing, amazing performances, of course - but man, does this have a weird feel watching it today.
