Ben * tims got style like a mutha fucka..hes original n 100% punk rock...Lars is crazy talented in his own right....Matt is a genius but the band compliments each other
lol playing bass like that isn't even that hard. this is just what it looks like when someone with the talent of a lead guitarist applies their skills to the bass
Besides this awesome bass solo on this video, I think Matt Freeman pwns Wooten and Flea in all categories. Just as musicians period. Freeman knows how to pick, slap, Play an Upright bass (Double bass), A Guitar, and a Mandolin. And expresses all of these in his music.
Hunter Havok Dude, you've got to be kidding me. I mean, as far as preference, you absolutely can like Matt's bass playing better, but there is no question that overall Victor Wooten far surpasses this guy as far as skill goes. I am personally shocked they can even be compared. This bass solo has absolutely no feel, no rhythm, no dynamics and certainly no melody, at all. It's rambling. Victor Wooten plays with an incredible amount of feel, dynamics, and he is BRILLIANT melodically and rhythmically. If you put Matt in any situation other than punk, he'd most likely be lost. If he had to follow a chord chart for jazz music, I don't think he'd even know WHEN to play, let alone WHAT to play. I mean really, this entire solo is a constant flow of 16th notes at a very fast tempo, I really don't hear anything complex happening here other than speed, and speed is the LAST thing that makes someone a good musician. Speed can be great when used as a way to articulate rhythmic phrases, and sure it can be fun to watch, but speed can also be a great cop-out, as in you just play so damn fast that it doesn't matter if you hit a bunch of random notes and there's no melody because everything is happening so damn fast nobody is gonna hear it anyway. Like I said, speed and flashiness can be enjoyable, but only when it's utilized in a musical way, and this bass solo is far from musical. That being said, you are obviously entitled to your opinion and have every right to like this guy as a bass player more than anyone else, I'm simply stating that there is no way this guy can be compared to Wooten as far as overall musicianship is concerned. As far as Flea, I think he is so incredibly overrated and boring as a bass player, I just don't see what people see in him. I personally think Matt is incredibly overrated too, but again, it's just my opinion, there's no right or wrong here, and please understand that what I said here I truly mean with all due respect to you!
Music isn’t competition. Everyone who is good at what they do wins. Matt is a punk rock legend and fast 16th note lines are a big part of his style. His bass lines showed the world how melodic bass playing can work in punk rock. Wooten is a jazz/fusion technique master. And Flea has been inspiring kids to pick up the bass for 40 years. Besides having some great technique in his own right, his creativity for writing bass lines that are perfect for the song is anything but overrated. Take another listen to “Soul to Squeeze”, or focus in on just about any bass line off “BSSM”. There is genius there. There’s not a single person on earth that says Flea is overrated, who could actually come up with anything better for those songs than what he did, much less play them as well.
The Judgment Night soundtrack was the height of the rap/rock experiment. It was great. After that it went straight into the garbage can. Except maybe RATM.
If you can't understand the importance in the tone variation between pick or fingers and you can't appreciate the skills of both types of bassist, or you write off either technique as being inferior, then you are a shit-tier bassist. Please hang up the instrument for good.
What the hell is wrong with bassists who use picks? Some of my favorite bassists use picks. Tom Araya, Jason Newsted, DeeDee Ramone... And they aren't exactly terrible.
Anybody know what kind of bass Matt Freeman is playing here? I can't make out the name on the headstock. It looks like a cross between a Rick and a P-bass. Is it just a custom job he had made that wasn't ever mass produced? I could live without the name inlay, but I wouldn't mind knowing if anybody makes that exact body shape.
@chicalibro3 its just so people focus on matt and not fanaticly focus on him, but i dont i see you could ever jsut focus on tim when the rest of the band is so talented

When I saw them they actually had Kevin Bivona (who'd eventually go on to The Interrupters) doubling his parts on a replica guitar, I definitely thought Tim was playing unplugged.
It's the Max Cavalera trick. Turned down in the mix so when he inevitably fumbles every third riff, all you can hear is the substantially more skilled and less decrepit lead player drowning it all out.

Tomas Avila Really? I find pick a lot easier. Still, I prefer using fingers for the versatility. And there's no problem with a bassist that uses a pick. It's all preference.
You could PROBABLY hit these notes if you practiced using all four fingers...most bassist use just two...BUT it wouldn't sound the same. You can't get pick tone with your fingers and you can't get finger tone with a pick. A good cover band bassist can do either

@@Dellerss Anthony Jackson did pretty well for himself with a pick (For The Love Of Money) among others, I think it’s just a tool to get the sound and feel you want
It's punk. Punk bassists pick. There's really no other way to get that hard steel, clenching sound. I've been a bassist since I was ten. I'm thirty. Matt is a hell of a bassist, period. He does things you can't learn from an instructor, and that's what playing is all about.
From seeing how many people are getting their panties in a twist over pick vs. finger style it'd be interesting to see someone make a cover of this song using there fingers.
MUD_ Honestly I just watched the finger picking video a few minutes before and my previous comment just popped up in my head, probably the same as yours.
Matt Freeman was a huge influence on me as a teen, and guess what, he still is! Still blown away by the smoking hot bass lines he lays down, super challenging to play, but also super fun and rewarding. Much love brother!
I love how the band goes off the spotlight to give the stage to him, great band. Ok on the pick and the finger playing, it's a technique. It's like painting with a brush or using your hands. It's a technique that uses an instrument in this case, the pick. And don't compare bassists, comparison is good for studying but only under manifesto and style or era. These guys are not style related, so don't compare.
OK, I'm going to explain how it is short and simple since many people are having a hard time grasping it:) Pick playing vs finger style is a choice of technique and/or sound that has nothing to do with easy or difficult per se. Bass players in certain genres (e.g. punk and thrash/groove metal) gravitate towards using a pick because of tradition, sound and playing techniques. There are of course finger styles, like advanced slapping techniques, that require a lot more training than playing fast down-strokes with a pick, but how would that sound in a punk rock song for example? Not very good. Also, there are figures and sequences which are actually much harder to do with a pick than with your fingers (e.g. playing a melody on the higher notes while maintaining an ostinato - accompanying - bass tone) and vice versa. Sure, it's true that unskilled bassists tend to use a pick, since the finger style has a somewhat higher threshold for achieving an intermediate level of skill, but that doesn't mean that the pick style as such is easier if you consider more complex musical structures and techniques above the most basic level of playing. The finger style is also historically more widespread and explored in more musical genres, which generally means there are more skilled finger players than there are skilled pick players. Just statistics. Ok, not so short, but I got carried away.
it took you that long to shit out your point? If music sounds great, no one cares which technique is used. Instead of you all pretentiously posturing over a pick, you could be listening to the music. I can't roll my eyes far enough back to do justice to this stupidity.
Big fan, and I think the best part of rancid when they play live is that tim never plays more than a few chords, yet a show without him would never be the same. He may not add much to their live sound, but he adds so much to their stage presence he's irreplaceable.

iHatePop People are shortsighted and zoned into the idea of what a "bassist" is, but not everyone will play without a pick. It's very typical for Matt Freeman to not only play with a pick, but use his middle finger to pluck a higher note as well (he said so in an interview). After he said that, I looked for it, and you can tell, it's why he has the "pincher grip" using his pointer finger and thumb for the pick. In this way, he's not just playing with a pick, but also finger playing, so everyone who gets on him for not using his fingers can GTFO. Besides, it's not like he's not a monster without a pick too, he often plays a standup bass in Devils Brigade. Credit where credits due, Matt is one of the greatest bassplayers who walk the earth today.
Wow...astonishingly good. I love the way the solo here lasts about as long, if not longer, than the entire original version of the song on the album does!
rancid would be SO much better without Tim's vocals. Lars is such a fucking great punk vocalist. I know Rancid is big but if Tim had just put his fucking ego aside and played lead guitar and kept his mouth shut Rancid would be a god level punk band
Normally, when someone says of their band member "He's the greatest in the entire world", It's not without bias and therefore incorrectness. But you know, when he says that, I don't see how you can look at Matt and actually have the balls to disagree with what he's saying.

rancid would be SO much better without Tim's vocals. Lars is such a fucking great punk vocalist. I know Rancid is big but if Tim had just put his fucking ego aside and played lead guitar and kept his mouth shut Rancid would be a god level punk band
Matt freeman is clearly better than flea anyday!
yeah but can he do Gene Simmons bass solos? that's what i thought.
This is the single most bad ass moment in all of recorded bass history
Let's be real- we all just looked up the live version to see how fast his fucking hands were going during the bass solo
this is the sickest bass solo I've ever heard honestly.
Am I the only one who doesn't like the singing? It sounds fine on record but live...
Imagine playing the Dave Mirra game and having it play this in a loop.
love it when Tim and Lars slide to side so Matt can have the all the spotlight
Some aspects of his way playing specially the bass solo reminds me of John Entwistle free notes and Lemmy Killmister. Great.
Good lord, I love Matt Freeman!
Matt and Brian Ritchie have always been my favorite bassists.
Normally, when someone says of their band member "He's the greatest in the entire world", It's not without bias and therefore incorrectness. But you know, when he says that, I don't see how you can look at Matt and actually have the balls to disagree with what he's saying.
Best bass player in punk, definitely. But there's a lot of bassists who outclass Freeman in my opinion.
Did anyone notice the duct tape over the Marshall amp to spell Lars?
Freeman is the Pastorious of the punk world.
Why is Matt using a Rickenbacker?!
