  • Hiking, Backpacking and an attempt at Tent Camping in the Rain in Virginia’s George Washington National Forest.
For this overnight backpacking trip, Sara and I decided to do some summer backpacking with our dog on a section of Great North Mountain, a 50 mile long mountain ridge that runs along the border of West Virginia and Virginia.
Despite the threat of a quickly approaching storm, we decided to forge ahead with a modest 3 day, 7 mile backpacking trip. Our plan was to keep the itinerary relatively simple in hopes that we could get to camp in time to beat the rain. And then we ran into a slight complication. Actually, it wasn’t slight at all. It was quite possibly the biggest backpacking mistake I’ve ever made…

Their GP Pants have a ton of accessory pockets for hiking and camera gear organization, and deep pockets for safely stowing a cell phone on technical terrain. The material has stretch but is still rugged for heavy brush and rock scrambles, which is a plus for my off trail adventures.

Lessons learned: 1 Colour coded stuff sacks for tent - check, 2. square hotdogs - check, 3. carry lever arm can-opener - check, 4. My first aid kit is top-notch already (I am an ex-paramedic) and carry Stingose, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and bug-spray already. Educational, sometimes, funny, and an example of how it can go wrong for even the most experienced amongst us.

I much prefer total disclosure of mistakes made over some phony edited, polished fluff. Vicariously, I learned quite a bit in this video. And as experiences go, it was certainly chock full of valuable lessons for the partaking. I'm betting from this point on, you'll always have some way to open a can, the mystery stuff sack mix-up will never be repeated, and I'd bet all your future hotdog grills are nice and level. The best part had to be the 'adding insult to injury', hotdog fiasco. By the end, I was cracking up. 🤣👍👍

Sintax next time if you take the can and rub it against a flat rock or concrete the friction will quickly wear through the seam and allow you to easily remove the lid and open the can. If you see moisture on the rock or grinding surface you know your through the seam. It works like magic. Try it outside with a tuna can.

Great video. Suggestions: 1. A Victorinox Tinker pocketknife is lightweight, cheap, and has ALL the tools you need (say, can opener). 2. Learn how to make a tent (LOTS of designs capable of holding two people and a dog) using a ten by ten tarp (which it looks like you have). All that's needed is some carved stakes, some line and maybe a pole collected on site. 3. KEEP that young lady! She's a trooper and has a great sense of humor. A lady like that is a jewel. Hello 👋 my outdoors friends, greetings from dry parched Northern California. You folks had quite an adventure. You made the best of a challenging situation. Next time you're in the area of an Army Navy surplus surplus store, stop in and purchase a couple p-38's. They are otherwise known as GI can openers. They are about the weight of a nickel. Get one for you and one for Sarah. The best of good health and safety to you, Sarah and Denali. Stay safe out there and don't forget the tent next time. 🤗

What a treat to see this trail on video. Way to keep it light. I’ve hiked this a bunch-alone, with my boys and a couple of buddies. One January had to cowboy camp in the same place bc of tent issues. George Washington National Forest is really neat.

You guys are in my "neck o the woods" quite a bit. This area of GWNF is by far my favorite. Cedar creek, old mail path, bucktail cutoff and long mountain are some of my all time favorites. I know you've done bucktail but next time you're out this way, take the cutoff. Just a gorgeous, gorgeous trail. We always look forward to your videos. Especially when you have Sarah and Denali with you. Hope Sarah will still go with you in the future haha !!

You guys are the best...as always AWESOME Video. I've been watching your videos for years, and have learned so much about backpacking in general, and for that I wish to truly thank you. After watching this video, and LMAO... when you said " My wife is not talking to me, but she is holding the camera", I couldn't stop laughing... Believe me, been there. We all have forgotten something one time or another. So for now on, I will OCD the hell out of when I pack my gear, and pick up a GI P51. Thanks again, Stay Strong, Stay Blessed...

It's all part of camping....It hasn't been so long ago that I was taking a new tent camping and dissimilar to my old tent the new tent had the poles in a separate bag, which I left hanging in my garage. I used the ground sheet for a tarp and since I was base camping, I also had hammock. Fortunate...These trips make the best memories...
You need a P38 (can opener)for your key ring...you can get them for literally 49 cents...
**This also only happens when you have someone to witness the entire disaster first hand, so they can remind you of the trip....FOREVER ! LOL

This was the best video I think I've watched in a long 😂 time. You two are adorable and are truly in love🥰. Most couples I know would be arguing by the time they got to the camping spot, let alone, the forgetting of the tent EEK!
They would have probably lost it, lol but, not you two.
Y'all handled all the mishaps with ease and love.
Getting mad and arguing isn't going to solve anything. I wish other couples would take a cue from you 🙄 lol 🤣
Thanks for sharing this awesome adventure I loved every bit of it.
    KEEP ADVENTURING
    GOD BLESS Y'ALL
    🤗HUGS🤗

I was excited to wake up too early, turn on the old Roku TV, go to You tube, and find a new Sintax77 video. As someone else has said, you won't ever make the same mistakes again. We've all been there, forgetting something we wanted or needed for a trip, and that is usually the thing we never forget again. We may forget something else, but not the same thing we had forgotten before. You and your wife and dog still had a good time out in the woods together, and that is one of the main benefits of your expeditions. Thanks for the honest, video, to which we can all relate. You made the best of it and still had a good time. I enjoyed seeing the little additions to your first aid kit; those are things that can really come in handy if they are ever needed, and thanks for the shout out. I'm sure you will enjoy those breakfast tacos on another trip in a relaxed setting when there is more time for breakfast. Keep hiking, and providing us with adventures to enjoy vicariously!

Last camping trip, i brought a cook pot and cup so i could have coffee and food at the same time. Problem, my new alcohol stove wasn't up to snuff and went out as soon as i put my pot on. Luckily I had a canteen cup stove so i used that as a stand. Then i realized that the pot was also my french press and couldnt cook my food immediately. Again, luckily my buddy i was with had a spare pot.
Every trip is a learning experience. It never goes perfect. You are always improving though. I have been camping since I was in diapers. Primitive, modern, military (Army 12 years) and ultra primitive (1700s gear only) camping. Vehicle, backpack and kayak travel. Every trip is different.

Hilarious. And informative as always. Would have enjoyed a review on those hiking pants but maybe you have another video on them somewhere. Add a P-38 can opener to your kit and get rid of that ridiculous gadget you almost cut yourself using on the Bean can. Hot dog solution. Turn them in the direction parallel to the grate?? Ha. All in all, great job as always. Thanks for taking the time to video real life situation‘s. Happened to us as well a while back. My cousins brought a 2p tent they were going to share, but forgot the poles. Thankfully the tent came with a full set of rather long guylines and I had some paracord on me, so we managed to tie the outer fly to about 4 different trees and it worked out. On my last trip, I realized I'd forgotten to pack the sleeping pad on our way to the trailhead. Ended up paying good money for a new Exped Synmat HL at an outdoor store, which was not the plan at all but since my old one broke (pre-2016 model that had the old type of baffle welds. Got my money back despite the pad being out of warranty, thanks Exped!) I guess it was a purchase that was gonna happen sooner or later anyways.
Despite these problems, we all had a great time anyway. This is the kind of stuff that makes it all memorable.
