Every once in a while I check out the various productions of this particular scene because I've never seen anyone get Pilate consistent with what we know about him (and there is biblical and extra-biblical source material). That includes the original and several other professional productions.
This is the first one that, for me, got Pilate right. Thank you, Mr Fuentes.
Pilate hated all Jews and didn't want to crucify Jesus, not because he thought J was innocent but that the Jewish leadership wanted it. Mr Fuentes communicates that overall disdain. Further, Pilate was a good Roman governor who would have been unmoved by the 39 lashes, not horrified (as most productions do).
You all got this particular scene right from a musical standpoint AND historical interpretation.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. I directed this production and I totally agree with you. And Steven is indeed one of the most talented actors I've had the pleasure of working with. I'll be sure to pass this reply on to him.

I find this production a tiny bit blasphemous, y’all didn’t need to sexualize Jesus being whipped..

Thanks for sharing your opinion. After directing two different productions of JCS and researching extensively the authors' work, I believe "a tiny bit blasphemous" would be in line with their work. Many consider this work in general a lot more than "tiny". But it's important to remember that this piece explores Jesus as a human man (which he was). This is not a biblical tale. It can be hard for some to separate their beliefs from the human man. Much as our current culture thrives and devours and even sexualizes the downfall of our icons and stars, I believe it was no different then.
