      Ha I was going to respond with "well Rob Thomas's Pilate was quite good, if a bit melodramatic," but then I remembered that was from Amstettan in 2005, when Drew played Judas. So, you're probably right!

    . . .
    Not a criticism, just I've got this specific idea in my head that since the scene is (as far as this stage can manage it) so realistic and "Jesus" is already so visibly beaten, audience members got worried and they got the guard visibly holding back.

    HOLY COW!!! i HAVE A NEW FAVORITE PILATE AFTER BARRY DENNEN! This guy is brilliant and he and Drew together are powerful...I understand it's a concert version but him holding the mic when he's wearing a mic makes no sense...also as one commenter noted, takes away from his close interactions with Drew.....also waaaaaaaay too fast...cripes...let's us enjoy the music...i kind of felt when drew was singing "you have nothing in your hands", he was trying to slow the feel down and maybe the orchestra would follow, but they came back in just as fast....i also do not like the orchestra in the middle of all the action bc they're distracting...my eyes went to the players who were watching when they weren't playing...put them to the side if they need to be onstage....i would love to see this in it's entirety bc I've only seen snippets of drew as Jesus...an amazing vocalist, if you've not seen it, he is an incredible Judas.

    Watching this again I still love Filippo's Pilate, esp. his facial expressions showing just how desperate he is that things are getting out of control and he has to actually make a decision. And yet... they've done this particular production two years in a row and I STILL don't know what the heck the thinking/rationale is for the golfing/businessman take on Pilate, and most especially in this scene... *why* is Pilate suddenly holding a hand mic like he's a talkshow host? Strocchi is already miked up (you can see the face/earpiece mic in close-ups, and back in the first Pilate-meets-Christ scene he's not using a hand mic)? It drives me a bit nuts because it takes away from Strocchi's naturalism and the interactions with Jesus when he has one hand attached to the hand mic close to his face. (Compare this with that earlier Pilate/Jesus scene--his performance is fantastically strong and naturalistic.)
    Then again maybe he needed to be double-miked because OMG THAT FRICKIN' ORCHESTRA IS CRAZY LOUD. Why? The music is fabulous, don't get me wrong, but you've got two staggeringly talented musicians on that stage--Drew Sarich and Strocchi--both of whom have loud, powerful voices, and yet they're struggling to be heard over the overwhelming noise from the orchestra.
    If anyone reads this and knows the idea behind this production's choices--why the gameshow or talkshow host mic usage for Pilate, why the orchestra is on the stage when it's overpowering the actors, etc., I would be so interested to hear about 'em.

      I would assume that the idea behind Pilate‘s visualization as a businessman is that this was his actual job as prefect in Jerusalem. He was in charge, but with no power of his own, since he got all of his orders from Rome. Just like Jesus tells him in the dialogue. A showy, wealthy man who has to follow protocol.

    • @parmina1992
      @parmina1992 4 года назад +3

      They are not really double-miked. Officially it is a concertant version and not full staged (don't ask me why but it is called concertant). All soloists are singing with the mic in their hands or on a mic stand, if it is possible and not undoable while playing (for example Jesus with tied hands; in the first act drew doesn't have a face mic). I think Drew said he loves singing with hand mic, because you can play with it.
      And yes, the orchestra is really loud, but it is the best musical orchestra in the world, and I am happy the are not down regulated. You feel the music in your body. The live experience last year was stunning.

      Well, he's got the look of a modern day Lawyer/Businessman/Governor because those are the people that run things these days, and this is a modernized version of the story. After all, at the heart of this story is the clash between the ruling classes represented by the Pharisees, Pilate, and Herrod, and the revolutionary ideals of the underclasses represented by Jesus and his disciples.

      It’s part of the production. The whole staging is kind of like a TV show production with a TV team walking around filming the most essential parts, „interviewing people“ while they sing their part. They (VBW) have been doing it the same way for yeaaaaars now.

      I agree. The tempo is too fast. This is the penultimate and most emotional scene of the musical and having slowing it down would have allowed the performers time to exhibit the range of emotions their roles required.
