How special it was, before the " time shares" and all the new high rises...when everyone was familiar at Mallory Square and we all clapped and cheered after the countdown to sun sinking in the horizon...when Truman still housed its sailors and we knew some by name....Remember the iguana man and the brownie lady on bicycle?..when people talked to one another and gadgets did not exist and folks took time to watch the sun go down frame by frame...awww when people were nice and humans were kinder. I have some old 8mm also and will have them transferred on DVD and post them. Thanks for posting this!!!
Was there for the first time in 1985 going through the Army SF SCUBA school and I think I got to experience a tiny part of the old Key West..talked to a few locals and even then they said the crowds were getting too big. Was glad as hell to finish the course but still felt like I experienced something special on that island. And I do remember the brownie/cookie lady on her bike.
I was there 1979-83 every winter and one very hot summer ....a magical time for me I Remember the iguana man and the brownie lady on bicycle. And the banana bread pudding man on his bike. I worked at The Orchid tree health food restaurant, Fleet Air WIng next capt Tony's, and the Roof Top.
Although I was not living there till late 70s, still truly miss the quieter, less commercialized key west, remember when the only big-box store was Sears(Searstown)ahhhh....was still a busy town, but a great busy.
Brings back some memories for me to got there in 1977 fresh out of high school. 5 years after this was shot not much had changed. Very sad now I'm older and a little confused when I go there. Difficult
A co worker of mine who's much older than me told me he remembers back in the 70s and 80s being in the florida keys. His family had a house there. For instance, he said the lobster was so plentiful, that they'd walk in their backyard, and you would see lobster just hanging out on the sand. He doesn't like what the keys has become. How expensive and overpriced the homes are now.
You cant take a piss in key west without going to jail nowadays.law enforcement is stifling.kwpd.sheriffs dpt.homeland security.Florida wildlife officers. State troopers.its oppressive
ah yes, so much nicer than today. Wish it could come back to its earlier form. Once they let the cruise ships in (early 90's I think?), is when it got commercialized. Who wants The Gap in Key West?!

My ancestral hometown: 1870 to 1984.
50 years ago. This was also the year Jimmy Buffett first arrived in KW (thank you Jerry Jeff).

No cruise ships then, water clear as far as u could see, dolphins seen @ night while sitting on dock @ Mallory square
This is around the time when Jimmy Buffett got there.
Very good, only a bit of music would not hurt. Sounds like an A.C.
Awesome 😎 but look at Key West now too commercialized, over priced, and environment has deteriorated.
Long before the pole smokers took over
To bad Jimmy screwed this up
It seems it
now the place is nasty and drunks on the streets being rude and loud and obnoxious.
