I grew up in Key Largo went to KLS K-8 & Coral Shores till my parents moved & drugged me with then to Western Kentucky. I’m still pissed at them. We moved 2 years after Andrew hit
The fort never fired a round. Bc of sandbars, It was too far from ships sailing by for its canon balls reach them. That’s why it was converted into a prison.
Migrants invading our beautiful Florida shores. National Park Dry Tortugas near Key West was shut down because of them. Hoping our leaders in Washington will do something about it
I flew out to the Dry Tortugas by Seaplane, September 1988. It was incredible, my wife and I were practically alone in this whole big 19th century fort. only people that sailed out privately could get there or charter a small boat. The snorkeling was INCREDIBLE! I was snorkeling along a south beach, and then came to the trench that had been dug out to coal the warships back in the day. The Maine's last stop was coaling right there before it got to Havana. As I swam out in the trench, the fish went from a foot or two at most to 4 to 8 feet including sharks....... I went back to the kiddie pool. Twenty years later, the big boats were going out there and it was just another tourist site. But in 1988, it was the most inaccessible national historic site in America..just COOOL as Hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poor Dr Mudd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We lived in Key Largo for 18 years. Loved it.
