Flying the GlaStar back from Annual (condition) Inspection

  • Hiiiii! Long time no video.
    Earlier this month I flew Woodstock to KBJC where I had access to tools and a willing mechanic to watch over my work to complete the Annual Inspection, (called a condition inspection for the Experimental world.) Woody got a 500-hour mag inspection with new points, all new spark plugs, new brake pads, rebuilt brake cylinder, all controls inspected and lubed, tailwheel bolts re-torqued---all that n' a bag of chips. It took me about 3 full days (6 part-time) to do everything!
    On this particular morning, I got in a rush to get in the air before it got hotter outside. (I got up at 4am to beat the heat, so excuse the messy appearance, too.) When I put the cowling back on, the piano hinge was misaligned. You can see it peeping out of the cowling shortly after takeoff. 😬 It can be a tricky bugger sometimes. (And don't let the piano hinge know you're in a hurry. It can smell your fear.) Fixed it as soon as I got back.
    Woody's CHT gasket probe has been disconnected since I've had him, and after reconnecting I found it to be reading very high. So now he is getting a new CHT gauge and a new 4-probe bayonet-style system see if I was getting an erroneous reading and troubleshoot as necessary, so stay tuned for that too~ Anyway, enjoy this quick flight!

    This, this kind of flying I enjoy the most. the DA had me a tad concerned. Yes, piano hinge pins automatically know what kind of day you are about to have. Two Zero Mike could have said you were in sight. geeze. Love your little airplane. That belly cam is badass. Thanks for the ride. and greetings from Louisiana.

    Hello Amy. Great to see you back in the air.
    Possible Topic for you: Pilot permissible maintenance ?
    I really do admire you jumping in and working on your equipment.
    There are many, many videos on YT that bemoan the HIGH COST of parts & labour on aircraft.
    Can you expound on what is and is NOT permissible for the owner to maintain? Is it DIFFERENT for Experimentals ?
    Many thanks.

    • @amywhite375
      @amywhite375  3 года назад +1

      Busy and high DA (and usually high winds)--that's KBJC 101. I saw about 400fpm in a cruise climb of 90kts.

    Hi - new sub here! Like your channel and Glastar.
    Would you detail your audio recording setup please? Your inflight commentary and avionics audio are crystal clear - impressive.
    I'm getting ready to spoil myself with some much needed upgrades to include Bose headsets, ADS-B in...ForeFlight (recommend Sentry or Stratus, or?), and an iPad (what size do you use?). This is for my 1978 Citabria 7ECA. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated?
    Looking foreword to more videos!

    • @amywhite375
      @amywhite375  2 года назад +1

      Hi! I have a pretty simplistic method for recording: A digital voice recorder with a small lapel microphone under the headset earcup. I can recommend the Stratus. I have the permanently mounted In-Out ADS-B in the GlaStar, and still have a portable when flying other planes. I use an iPad mini and find it's the perfect size for the cockpit!

    • @wheelspin1000
      @wheelspin1000 2 года назад +1

      @@amywhite375 Thanks for the quick reply. In the video, you had issues with the Stratus disconnecting. Did you figure this out?
      Additionally, did you get the uAvionix issue resolved? I've been looking at these same products and am curious to know if the products and customer service are meeting your expectations and if they're taking care of you.
      Very much appreciated - happy flying!

    • @amywhite375
      @amywhite375  2 года назад +1

      @@wheelspin1000 The Stratus needed a hard reset and it has worked fine after that! The uAvionix people are....trying. They are thankfully continuing to push out updates to try to correct the problems in their instruments. I just wish there weren't any problems to begin with. I cannot complain with their customer service though. They usually get back to me same day. They're currently working on the release of hardware + software with an internal magnetometer which should hopefully help the (currently less-than-accurate) accuracy of both the DG and AI.
