FMS Predator ESC - Do You Have Reverse Thrust?

  • Quick Tip! How to see if you have reverse thrust on your FMS Predator ESC and how to make it work.
Note: I am learning there are other brands that include this yellow wire that triggers reverse such as the Skywalker ESC reported by a commenter below. Be advised that the Spektrum Avian ESC's do have a yellow wire but it does NOT work like this, it only communicates with their ESC programmer. If you know of other ESC's with this yellow (or other color) wire that triggers reverse like the Predator or Skywalker ESC tell us below!

I'd like to add one thing. I mention you don't need to program anything to get reverse to work on these ESC's and that is true although it is best practice to turn motor braking ON when using reverse so the motor stops prior to activating reverse to reduce stress on the motor, prop, etc.

Thanks for explaining this. I was able to get my FMS Kingfisher reverse throttle working with my Spektrum transmitter using the tips/info in this video. It has a 40A Predator ESC in it with the spare lead.

HobbyKing now has a whole range of Aerostar esc's with the yellow wire for reverse

I use Skywalker 40A V2, it has an identical solution, reversing the direction of engine rotation.

Excellent, thanks for the info! I'm always on the lookout for ESC's that include reverse. Crazy to me that some of these manufacturers don't include in the manual or in the advertising that these have reverse. I just looked up that Skywalker unit and at least they do actually mention reverse in the ad, nice to see! And that unit is a great price too!

Hi Shane. Thanks for your RUclips videos as they are helpful.
I'm having some issues with my RM Boxer and Reverse Thrust on my E-flite Cherokee 1.3m. Could you share your radio setup with me? Do you use Inputs, Mixes, Special Functions or a combination?
My Avian ESC is set to
    Braking - Reverse
    Force - 7
    Rev Channel - Ch 7
I'm using the SE on my Boxer and I do see the output values change from -100 to 100 depending on if it is pressed in or left out.
Thanks for any advice you can provide me.
    Best regards,
    Bruce

Your basic setup sounds correct. How did you access the Avian setup? With the Boxer, Spektrum programmer, or some other transmitter? Might want to go back in and make sure the settings got saved. Make sure you are using DSM X2F as the protocol. If you have it set to DSM2 many of the advanced features won't work, none of the "Smart" functions will work.
Have you seen my video on adding reverse thrust to the AeroScout (link below)? It would be the same for this application. For basic assignment of a reverse channel it is only required in the mixer. If channel 7 (in my video I use ch8) is set to +100 reverse should activate, -100 will be forward. In my video towards the end I've included a more advanced reverse control method that I use with logical switches and special functions, just uses a single momentary button upon landing. Throttle stick at minimum and hit the reverse button. The control logic switches it to reverse waits 700 milliseconds and adds a preset amount of reverse throttle.

I used the TextGen lua scripts. I did verify the settings today and I am using the DSM X2F protocol. I did watch your AeroScout video but will watch it again. I may just start a new model and try to set it up from scratch. Thanks for confirming it looks right. I may change to the momentary button as I was using that for resetting the timer, but I can use one of the 6P buttons. I do love your "advanced" settings at the end. That seems to make a ton of sense and solve some potential problems. Thanks again!

You sure you have all 12 channels enabled in the internal RF? If you only have 1-6 enabled, channel 7 won't output to the receiver.

Yes, 1-8 is the min and I've got 1-16@@shanesdiy

@@Drones_Eye_View It MUST be channels 1-12 for DSM. If your RF setup is showing 1-16 it will NOT work.

I like to reverse my 16" propeller on final it's pretty spectacular, lol. Im joking, but I bet some have!!!:)

As long as you have the motor braking setup to stop the prop before reversing I bet it would be ok, just don't want to hit reverse while spinning forward. The 2.0 meter Draco does reverse thrust and it has a 14.5" prop...
I suppose I should mention, even with this ESC, would be best to activate the motor brake, even with smaller props it isn't good to hit reverse while the prop is still spinning.

@@shanesdiy exactly where I was going with the large propeller still spinning when activating reverse. Poof!!
