Very helpful, especially for setting expectations. I'm in the "better than nothing" bucket concerning my paternal GGF who didn't know who his parents were. After 20+ yrs researching and 5+ w/DNA (Auto and Y w/Auto on 5+ sites) no paper trail left to ck and no direct matches. There are some apparent matches on Ancestry's Thrulines to spouses in the ancestor line I'm 95% certain he belongs to as a highly likely love child but I'm not certain how much to trust those yet. Lazarus seems worthwhile to try, if I can build a decent kit. So, next I'll be off to watch your "Create a DNA Kit..." video to see what I'll need. I had hoped that Lazarus might help eliminate the line if nothing else, but now I know it won't help do that at all. All good info to have. Thanks!
Good luck with your research. I am happy to hear you appreciated my setting your reasonable expectations. I would rather have you pleasantly surprised rather than greatly disappointed.
Definitely going to trying this for both my grandfathers. I have three children from each tested already, and a fourth potential for one of them. I also have both of my grandmothers tested, so the control group is solid. I know it's not ideal, but it's the best I can do so I'm excited to try it out once I get all the kits together. Might even help me zero in on where my grandfather's paternal grandfather came from.
I have a question for Andy. Wouldn't creating a Lazarus kit for a father let's say, be more like creating the DNA of his child except that the child does not have a mother? Since you would start by combining the DNA of the children then the Lazarus kit would correspond to the DNA of a clone of the children except with no maternal DNA. Would that explain why the Lazarus kit for your grandfather was only a half match to your grandfather's DNA? Would it be correct to say that the Lazarus kit's DNA does not represent chromosome pairs because for each segment there is no corresponding maternal segment?
No, because the Lazarus tool is only looking at the father's DNA which the child has. That paternal DNA is made up of both grandfather and grandmother segments. What the output is, is there is at least one letter (either from the grandfather or grandmother) in every location and at some locations there are two letters (both a grandfather and grandmother).
I made a Lazarus kit for my deceased husband. It was obviously not a perfect kit because it showed his niece as a closer match than his own kids. Regular shared matches show them as they should be so no he was not her father.
Hello! THANKS FOR LAZARUS EXPLAINATION! Please, tell me, if is it posible, to download Lazarus-file and public (upload) it on Family Tree DNA, MyHeritage and so on?... I want to see Lazarus etnics etc.
Hi Andy I just wondering if I could bring my 4 X grandfathers DNA back from the Lazarus kit what kits would I have to use to do that because most of my relatives are dead but his childrens children are still alive, the reason why I'm asking is because he was born in England and I'm trying to get match's from there even if it's only a few or 1 lol
To bring the 4x grandfather, you would need the same people for each group as a more modern relative. Go through the Group 0, 1, and 2 requirements and see if you have enough persons in each group to create a kit.
On May 25th I created a Lazarus kit, which still hasn't completed. The One to One compare works, but no matching yet. On the profile everything seems ok, except that the Status says "Matchy - too many matches ". Do you know if this means the kit is no good, or I just need to wait longer? Thanks!
That's odd. I would do two things to troubleshoot. 1. Run the version I showed in the video that doesn't involve processing the kit. Make sure you can get something complete. If nothing shows up, then contact GEDmatch support directly to see what might be the problem. 2. If you have run the trial before processing and the hang-up is the processing. I would start the process over again. Sometimes weird things happen in processing. 3. If that doesn't resolve the issue, contact the GEDmatch support team directly. See if they can run the same kits and replicate your problem. There could be a programming error. I hope that helps.
Also, "Matchy - too many matches" means there is not a lot of information (i.e. poor kit) and so too many matches are appearing that are statistically unlikely.
Thank you so much for another very informative video. I would like to ask you if it would be possible to get the real DNA of a deceased ancestor if we can have access of his or her remais, like, for instance, some hair. I understand that the police can do this, however can we do this only for the sake of genealogy? Do you know if any company does that regurlaly? Thanks for the attention.

It could help. One always wants more tools in the toolbox when working on family tree building to be sure.
So, what’s a Lazarus kit??
Watch this video as the one you're watching is part two of the series. ruclips.net/video/KD1R9AIFB0c/видео.html

Garnett! Mine are from Peach Grove,, King & Queen County, Virginia back to Reuben Merriweather Garnett
Cool. I haven't been able to do much more than get back to James Garnet in Western New York. Someday, we might discover we're cousins.

You are discovering some of the things I cautioned about in this video. Thanks for adding to the conversation.

No. That's not an option. Lazarus kits are only for research purposes of DNA matching on GEDmatch.

I covered the DNA from stamps and hair samples in this video ruclips.net/video/zYkJckKpgrE/видео.html
