    Carousel in Concert
    6/6/02 Carnegie Hall, NYC
    Billy
Well, anyway, you mean you don't love me.
That's what you said, isn't it?
    Julie
    Yes!
I can smell 'em, can you, ah?
The blossoms. The wind brings 'em down!
    Billy
There ain't much wind tonight... Hardly any.
You can't hear a sound, not the turn of a leaf
Nor the fall of a wave hittin' the sand.
The tide's creepin' up on the beach like a thief,
Afraid to be caught stealin' the land!
On a night like this I start to wonder
    What life is all about.
    Julie
And I always say two heads are better than one to
    figure it out.
    Billy
    [spoken]
I don't need you, I don't need anybody helpin' me.
Well, I got it figured out for myself.
We're not important. What are we?
A couple o' specks with nothin'
    Look up there...
    [sung]
There's a hell of a lotta stars in the sky,
And the sky's so big the sea looks small,
And two little people, you and I
    We don't count at all.
    [spoken]
You're a funny kid, you know?
I don't remember meetin' a girl like you.
Hey, you're tryin' to get me to marry you?
    Julie
    No!
    Billy
Then what's puttin' into my head, babe?
You're diff'rent, alright! I know what it is...
You have doped me with that little kid's face, right?
    You've adjusted me!
I wonder what it'd be like...
    Julie
    What?
    Billy
    Nothin'.
No, I know what it'd be like.
It'd be awful! I can just see myself-
    Kinda scrawny, and pale
    Picking at my food,
And love-sick like any other guy.
I'd throw away my sweater, and dress up like a dude
In a dicky and a collar and a tie.
    If I loved you.
    Julie
    [spoken]
    But you don't!
    Billy
    No, I don't!
    [sung]
    But somehow I can see
    Just exactly how I'd be
    If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.
    If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
    Round in circles I'd go!
    Longin' to tell you,
    But afraid and shy
I'd let my golden chances pass me by!
    Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,
    Never, never to know
    How I loved you
    If I loved you.
    [spoken]
Aha...I'm not the kinda fella to marry anybody!
No, even if a girl was foolish enough to want me to,
    I wouldn't!
    Julie
    Don't worry about it, Billy!
    Billy
    Who's worried?
    Julie
You were right about there bein' no wind.
The blossoms are comin' down by theirselves.
Just they're in time to, I reckon.

Hugh Jackman is one of the few 'truely' talented stars in Hollywood today. A REAL all rounder, like they used to be.

I wonder how many people realize how this one scene changed the musical theater genre forever. There was never such changes within a single scene with differing sub-songs and recitative interpersed between them. Before this, the standard was a song on its own, nothing in between. This really opened up the world of musical theater.

Hugh is so believable in every role he plays. He is truly blessed as an all around "natural" entertainer. His voice is mesmerizing. His acting is superb. AND!! He's not hard on the eyes!! To add to all of that, he is a wonderful human being, inside and out. A true MAN. All men around the world could learn from him.

I always thought he sounded crap due to his performance in les mis, but man that resonance in this song, that vibrato makes me think it’s not even the same guy that gave that shoddy performance in les mis. Maybe he was asked to be like that, and shame on them for wasting his talent like that. This is absolutely amazing.

I've listened to the australian Beauty & the Beast as well as Oklahoma! and The Boy from Oz. I too am a singer, training for opera though, not musical, and I love Jackman's voice. I don't think he has a breathing problem and I think his performance in Carousel is top notch. For me he is ideal for Bigelow and Curly, the way he acts, the sound of his voice, his manly looks. He is imposing on stage. We just have different opinion which is natural when it comes to such subjects as singing.

I study opera for more than six years in the best conservatory of Athens, Greece, with one of the best teachers we have here and I can tell that this man knows how to sing and control his breath. And if you think I don't know much (besides, I'm not a pro like veganWiccan who definetely knows better than me), well know that my teacher thinks Hugh Jackman is amazing, and she is always very strict when she is to judge a singer...

Where was this Jackman voice in Les Miserables??

    • @sportsmed77
      @sportsmed77 9 лет назад +21

The director for Les Miserables wanted a different type of singing. He wanted it to feel raw and real - less pretty. Also, for much of Les Mis, Hugh is crying or being very emotional while singing. Then add to that the fact that he had to sing an octave and a half higher than his natural baritone voice for Les Mis and you get a different sound. I still think he did a fantastic job in Les Mis.

    • @pajarowalking
      @pajarowalking 9 лет назад +3

sportsmed77 Whatever the reasoning, there is no excuse, professionally speaking, for 'bad' singing or nonsigning acting in one of the greatest musical works of this century. Hugh Jackman is so much more than that - think - Oklahoma.

    • @sportsmed77
      @sportsmed77 9 лет назад +8

pajarowalking That is the director's responsibility. If the director wants it that way, that is how it will be so your gripe I'm guessing lies with Tom Hooper (the director of Les Mis) and not Hugh Jackman. Hugh did everything that was asked of him for Les Miserables and more and was a total professional (just look at the hell he put himself through to play that character). Personally, I had no problem with the singing in Les Mis, anyway, although I get why some people did. And yes, Hugh was great in Oklahoma.

    • @pajarowalking
      @pajarowalking 9 лет назад +4

My original post was not intended as a knock on Jackman nor Tom Hooper. Hooper showed that he intended to maintain the integrity of the show by filming the songs live with one camera, one take. But the results were not what Schonberg and Boublil had in mind when writing the score. Just sad that the potential was not fulfilled.

Do you know "Carousel"? Of course Julie Jordan is MUCH younger than Billy Bigelow! Julie is 18 in the show, if that...wide-eyed and innocent, easily taken advantage of by the older, more "experienced" cad, Billy. I think Hathaway would be perfect opposite Jackman and I hope I live long enough to see this production become a reality.

May I thank egazeba for thoughtfulness in including lyrics, given poor audio. It's a pity this wasn't commercially released. Now I've been listening to opera and choral for five decades and I'm a pretty fair amateur singer; the notion Mr. Jackman is out of his depth is ridiculous. More than one comment from those trained agrees. Too bad orchestra leads rather than follows. My beautiful wife said "Did you see the way Audra looked at him after he kissed her?" Indeed. Btw Audra sang "Smile" at Joan Rivers' memorial Sept 7 2014.

+Tron Duick , while I agree with you that Hugh Jackman is blessed with a real vocal talent and presence, I think the other folks in this thread questioning Jackman's ability in this song are fair. Just listen to his voice towards the end of the piece, when he sings "...never, never to know..". He really has to reach for that note. He gets to it, but clearly it's a bit of a stretch for him. Maybe he was not sufficiently vocally warmed up that day? Because we certainly have seen evidence of his singing abilities in other roles, Jean ValJean notwithstanding. ( musicaltheatergeek79 has a valid point in this regard.)

+bookmom07 He's right at the top of his range, no doubt about it. You're right. I guess it's a good example of the whole being different from the sum of its parts - a magic moment captured.

Does it not occur to anyone that the audio is shitty because of a microphone far away?
Yes - you can say the performances were good from the essentials, but I'll buy the recording.
This is not worth posting other than telling you what you're missing without a proper recording.

OMG!!! How'd you record this? I tried to record Brian Stokes Mitchell at Carengie, and one of the ushers saw the light on my camera x_x
