In mythology, Mara was the demon god of Earthly Desire and Death. When he heard that Prince Siddhartha was sitting under a tree trying to learn the secrets of death, rebirth, and the wheel of the cosmos, Mara sent his demon hoards across the land to find and tempt or destroy the prince. Their efforts failed, and the prince became Buddha.
The character seems to also be based on Lord Shiva because the rays that come out of the missing eye on the ride and not looking at the eyes. Shiva's third eye can destroy anything it looks at when it is open
