    For those who may be wondering, the the reason Harrison Ford did that to begin with was stunt work. During some of his first stunts, the hat kept on falling off which would result in way more takes than expected. He found that by twisting the hat like this, it would be a tighter fit and stay on. But since the pinch was now clearly out of place with the hat turned, he moved it more towards the center of his face, and that could be why it's so tight. Harrison really wanted to make sure he could get a new pinch in there. Though the ribbon was still slightly off center, but because it didn't really make the hat look odd in the final product, it was all good in there eyes.
    This could be why the hats in Temple of Doom and Crusade were noticeably different from the Raiders Poet. Supposedly, the story of the original hat block being discovered in 2016 was bunk. Though because they made hats specifically designed for Ford to wear and to stay on damn well during the action, that means there was no need to do a Raiders Turn. Though one of the reasons the Last Crusade hat looks a bit more accurate is because Ford still tinkered with it before takes.

      HF sure did know how to manipulate hats. Speaking as a fellow person with a long oval head shape I share those similar fitting issues, so getting a hat made to the correct size and also to accommodate head shape is very important to me too. Throwing the oval off access to create a shorter pressure point front and back in this way with the Turn is surely one way to solve such an issue. And an iconic hat is thus born!
      There were many differences in the hats for the three films as the brand were using different suppliers each time the studios came to HJ for hats. Plus each studio and costume designer have their own ideas too don't forget.
      As for the block story - all a myth that has for some reason perpetuated. Perhaps due to romanticism and nostalgia. You can read the HJ blog about the subject here:
      herbertjohnson.co.uk/blogs/journal/mythbusting-the-indiana-jones-hero-poet
      What I truly love about the Raiders over all the others is that HF made that hat his own, seasoned it and wore it in. It made the hat and the character just SO believable. And who doesn't love that loved and lived in appearance that a well worn item gets over time and use. Those 'scars of life' are beautiful!

      Michelle Poyer-Sleeman, I ordered my Poet post 2001 I believe. Mine was not as tall as the one you have in the video and has a black lining. Did I get a Poet that was not quite the Raiders style?
      Just wondering because I’m wanting to order another from you but I am looking for one like you posted in the video and not like the one I ordered 19 years ago.
      Thank you!

    I read about it with the raiders hat years later, but I learned how to get that shape on my own with the first fedora I ever owned. I turned it on my head and saw the brim move and voilà! It was exactly what I'd been trying to make it do to no avail. When I read about the movie hat I was like, duh! Lol.

    (Sorry for my poor English). Excellent video ! In the eighties, I was travelling in London with my sister. In a street called "Old Burlington", I've seen a beautiful shop of hats. Beautiful "brown felt"...I was going inside. Since I'm kid, I'm attract by hats ! The seller was very "class", distinguished ", "pur" british style. I bought two hats (could be the poet but the top wasn't so high and the border larger), one for me and one for my father. The seller told us that he had made the hat of the movie Indiana Jones. I'm must confessed that I didn't believe him (no Internet at this time !). In myself, i thought " he told me that because he wanted to sell the hat !". Before to leave the shop, he told us a story about the fabrication of the hat and we have been spoken together a short moment. Just before to leave the shop, he told us : "My name is Richard". I'm happy to see that, now, HJ decide to start to produce seriously the fabrication of the poet with a good quality of felt ! I've spend a lot of money to buy fakes and, desperately, I've stop to look for this hat until I've discovered these videos recently...Thank You very much.

      Thank you for your kind message. We are glad to hear your story of your visit to the old London shop and meeting Richard Swales. We have heard many similar stories from fans and we are always happy to hear them, especially as sadly Richard passed away many years ago but it's lovely to know his character and his story live on in all those who met him. It was indeed true that he played a pivotal part in the creation of the Indiana Jones hats for the original movies and continued to make them for fans many years after. Although the company has changed a lot over the years, we made it our mission in 2016 to bring the brand back to its roots with a radical reboot. We now source only the very highest quality raw supplies for our headwear and all are currently handcrafted the traditional way made bespoke to order for every customer in our UK workshops. We can now proudly offer our extensive Indy hats range to the fans which are not only authentic by name but now with an authenticity to every detail of our originals with a build quality and longevity that is hard to beat. Thank you for kindly sharing your story and we wish you all the very best from the HJ family!

    I wonder why Mr. Ford did that? It does give it a more crumpled, ragamuffin look. Perhaps we are meant to assume that Indy re-blocks all his hats himself after they get waterlogged as in the Peru opening river chase. Maybe he went to re-bash it using kettle steam at home and screwed up the pinch relative to the brim a little? Interesting.

    I have an oblong face shape (longer then it is wide). Would “the turn” fit my head shape better than the regular version?

    • @HerbertJohnsonHatters1889
      @HerbertJohnsonHatters1889  4 года назад

      Hi Sam, we have also emailed you directly about this enquiry. However, long facial features do indeed suit the stature of the classic Raiders Poet really well. It is however the shape of the head, as seen from above that determines more about how the hat will fit and behave, especially with a Poet which has the Turn put in. If your skull has a long oval shape, ie. When seen from above, is narrower in width ear to ear and longer forhead to back, having a more even long-oval shape from above and less egg shaped or rounded...then your long-oval head shape is most likely to produce the most dramatic behaviour in the hat brim when the Turn is in, due to the front&back pressure points and how they effect the turned, now off-centre oval of the cut brim shape of the hat. So if you have a long-oval head shape and you like the look of the hats in the movie which have the Turn and show the asymmetrical swooping of the brim, then go for one of our Poets with the Turn put in as your head is likely to produce a similar shaping when wearing the hat! Hope that helps!

    I have so many questions, but the one feature a couple of the Raiders fedoras in particular share that no one has been able to answer for me before is why the back of the hat is so much lower than the front. Something about the geometry of that puzzles me and I have finally come to the conclusion that Harrison Ford simply has a sloped cranium. (I'm kidding, but still.)

    Hi~May I ask which color is the right color that the indiana jones wear in the raiders of the ark

    • @HerbertJohnsonHatters1889

      Hi there, we offer several options of felt colour and type to cater to all customers preferences. Our Deep Sable is matched to the actual original hats that we provided for the films as worn by Harrison in Raiders. However, during filming they used coloured filters and lighting techniques that changed the appearance of the actual hats colour on screen, so our Sable felts are for those that prefer this look. Both our Sable and Deep Sable are available in both rabbit and beaver felts. I hope that answers your question. If you have any further enquiries, do let us know by emailing enquiries-hj@herbert-johnson.co.uk Thank you.

      Hello. No, here at HJ we do not advise this. All our hats are handcrafted to order so our advice (see our website for full details and our measuring guide) is to measure correctly following our guide and order your hat on our website to your measured size (rounded up to the nearest half cm if neccessary) irrespective of whether you are ordering a standard or turned hat style. Our hatter will craft your hat to fit your measurement provided and make any adjustments for the turn as required. We also advise clients that should their measurement fall between sizes to email us with your exact size measurement separately, including your order ref. number and this note can be added to your order paperwork. I hope that helps, thank you. Any more questions? Feel free to email our team at enquiries-hj@herbert-johnson.co.uk

    Great video and thanks for the explanation. I just put myself on the waitlist for the poet and think I DO want the turn done by HJ, but I have a question on fit - I have a pretty large head - For fitted baseball caps in the US, I'm a 7 3/4. But when I've bought Fedora's in my size, they always hurt and are uncomfortable. I think I do have a long oval shaped skull, so my theory is that baseball caps are very flexible and can thus fit to my head, whereas Fedoras generally have a fixed oval and I suspect, but have confirmed, that is why they always feel tight on me. I can usually stick my pinky up through either side of my head. Is that something you could deal with?
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear Herbert Johnson, I just received my Raider's rabbit poet, thank you, but I noticed that the crown has a converging/trapezeus shape toward to top, instead of the legendary parallel side, like in your video. Hi billb89. Herbert Johnson Hatters have enjoyed a long history of collaboration in providing headwear items for iconic film & television costuming. With our experience in this field, we can tell you that studios require strict NDA's (Non Disclosure Agreements) preventing anyone working on a production from discussing or revealing anything with the public. Disney's NDA's are renowned for being particularly strict, therefore whomever may be involved in any way with the film will not be able to discuss or even confirm their involvement, and any of their products being provided for a film will be strictly controlled from general reproduction. So we don't think you will be able to find out anything pre-release I'm afraid!

Should you prefer your hat made without this feature, we can offer shaping to your preferences here at HJ. However if you already own a hat from any brand maker with this feature, once the felt is stretched to create this bulge, it would be difficult to remove it without professional attention with a reblock service. Hi is this sable or deep sable?
    What’s the difference between your Raiders and Last Crusade hats….is it the same hat/block used but just different bash styling?

    • @HerbertJohnsonHatters1889
      @HerbertJohnsonHatters1889  2 года назад +1

      Yes exactly, the same block is used but the differences are made by how the open crown and brim are then shaped. View our hat styles on our website to see the differences. In essence, the Raiders styles tend to have a tighter front pinch and deeper size dents in comparison to the more sift relaxed shaping of the Crusade crown. Both have their distinct shaping to their brims also, most notably the Crusade with its unfurled back brim that has a foreshortening effect on the look of the brim. The hat worn in the video is in Deep Sable I believe. I hope that helps.
