The update is that Herbert Johnson have as of 2016 have *found* the original Raiders block. If you order a 'Poet' from them now it will be the most authentic Raiders Fedora
They found the original Raiders Block! Excellent! Now they have make exact copies and sell them to hat manufactures so can make official authentic Raiders hats!!!
@@MrPOKER725 Rabbit is Raiders authentic, floppy material. Beaver is harder and what they used for the other movies. The turn is the ribbon bow, for some of the Raiders movie it was turned more to the front, instead of the side, by accident more than by design. Or maybe Ford's creativity, he played around with the hat a lot during production.
There’s a German version available sold by Adalbert Breiter GmbH in Munich, crushable felt, very good quality, a good hat with styling for those rainy days when you forget your umbrella. Mine lasted 20 years till I left it in a restaurant.
As much as I love the Raiders fedora I still love the Last Crusades fedora a bit more for the simple fact that as a kid I would watch that film all the time since it was my favorite and also I remember with the sides of the brim swooped up it has more of a cowboy hat look to it and that was the hat I really fell in love with and always really wanted. The best two are the Raiders and the Crusades hat.
Yes Toht's hat is basically a black version of Indy's hat, with the high straight sides and deep pinch. The filmmakers must have done this on purpose, the two hats are too similar for it to be accidental. However Toht's hat differs from Indy's in two other ways 1) its brim is bound with ribbon and 2) I think the band is a bit wider.
This video you made, sir, is the ultimate and most useful piece of information and research that I was hoping to have in my hands. Thank you for having made it. Congrats!
The funny thing is that in the novels they address this a few times. He actually keeps getting new hats over and over again because he frequently loses them. In one novel "The Peril At Delphi", Indy falls into a crevice and the hat is lost and so he gets a new one. The reason that we as fans were led to believe that it's the same fedora over and over again was the opening scene to The Last Crusade. That one moment where the tomb robber puts the hat on young Indy and then the scene immediately cuts to Indy grown and onboard the ship fighting to get the cross of Coronado back. It was that scene that led everyone to believe that Indy's hat was actually the same hat but in truth he just keeps getting new ones. In truth I always preferred the Last Crusade hat simply because it had a more "Bogart" class style look to it. The original Raider hat is amazing but i was never a huge fan of the huge tall crown in the Raiders hat. For me my love will always be the Last Crusade hat.
Actually, at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones lost his hat. He left it on the Nazi submarine, remember? You see him run out of the submarine and in the next scene he is hatless and without his leather jacket. He then dresses up as a nazi and we never see him get his hat and jacket back. He must have left them on the submarine, there's no way he could have gone back to get them!
***** Yeah! and in the sequels they make it seem like the hat is a part of him and he keeps on getting it back convienently. In temple of Doom, it fell off his head when he was escaping that booby trap chamber, but he manages to grab it just in time before the door closes. In Last Crusade, he loses it when he falls with the tank down the canyon, but it magically flies back to him in the wind! It seems like the fedora didn't mean as much in Raiders, so he didn't get it back in that movie, but in later films it was very important that he always got his hat back.
Super informative video!!!! Thanks for producing. Much like yourself, I too I am a big fan of the IJ movies and was interested in the hat but never truly considered making the purchase. Coming back from a sales call in 1989 I was passing the J.J. Hat Center store in Manhattan, NY. Otherwise known as the Stetson Hat Store. It was a cold winter's day and my head was freezing so I took a walk inside to warm up. There were several Stetson special edition IJ fedoras from 1984 still lining the shelves. True fedora aficionados would probably never be caught dead wearing such a cheap hat but it was a novelty, it was cold outside and at $45.00 it was affordable. The brim seemed a lot longer than the one in the movies but the gentleman behind the counter knew his trade well. He took out his steamer and after a few minutes the hat had all the proper bends and impressions to give it that authentic look. Truthfully, I thought the hat would be worth a lot of money down the road not realizing how many had truly been produced so I wore it for one week and then left it home hanging on the tip of a floor lamp. Several years later I came home after a long day and found my wife waiting for me with a Gin and Tonic. I noticed my two boys in a time out sitting in separate corners of our living room. My wife handed me my drink and explained that I would need it. On the living room table rested what was left of my IJ hat. It would appear that the boys decided to take turns wearing it which ultimately turned into a tug of war with the hat losing out badly. I remember staring at it in utter disbelief. I called them over and I’m sure they thought they were going to get the living day lights beaten out of them as they sat there quietly starring into space. I have to admit that I was pretty pissed off but at the end of the day it was only a hat. I told them that they just destroyed a $100,000 hat (hey, don’t hit your kids, just tell them tall stories that really make them feel bad) and that neither of them were ever going to college because the hat was their college fund. OK, a bit of an exaggeration but for a 5 & 6 year old it made an impact. I can honestly tell you that they never destroyed anything again. So what happened to the hat? In true Indiana Jones style, I punched my fist through the center of it and tore apart what was left of it as the boys looked on with the fear of God put into them. They got yelled at but there were no spankings and they did get dinner. They are both in college now and I plan on passing this video on to them for a good laugh. Again, thanks for producing a great video about my $100,000 IJ hat ….wink : )
I always thought Indy's fedora looked different in each movie, but I could never put my finger on why. His hat from Raiders has to be my all-time favorite.
Hmm... Though the raiders hat is by far the best hat, i think you are the first person ive ever come across who thinks Temple of Doom was the best of the films. Steven Spielberg's screaming wife ruined the movie imo and only got the gig because of her Husband.
Excellent video, covering a very complex subject in a compact and clear way. At 3:14 "Savile" in Savile Row is pronounced SAV-il (accent on first syllable).
EXCELLENT job on this, Rob! I enjoyed every minute (PLUS, you've just saved me a lot of time and effort in the future... Next time people are asking me about the Indy Hat I can just sit 'em down and show them this well thought out, informative and funny video!) Thanks so much for all your hard work on this... The final product is, frankly, GREAT.
Excellent video, and I'm in complete agreement with you, which is why I looked up this particular subject matter in the first place! I was fairly stunned to find that I was NOT the only Raiders fan who knew that the "official" hats were not even remotely correct. I have seen MANY of them in the past three decades (including one offered as such at Universal Studios in Florida back in 2012), and ALL of them were miserable failures. Thanks for providing this most excellent information about my favorite hat!
i love the raiders style and the crusade it's always been my favorite. but i also purchased one the official licensed fedora and it wasn't that bad. i managed to shape it to have the original Indy crease instead of the original tear drop. took alot of work but it came out nice i must say.
Excellent editing, fantastic narrative...highly informative and entertaining! You are a talented editor. Well done indeed! By the way, I'll be collecting my 'Raiders Penman' fedora this week, after a 5-month wait!
Christ I would love a raiders fedora but way too expensive even the Herbert Johnson company want £475 here in the UK and that was only last week I enquired.
I have an Adventurebilt "Henry" bought second hand, but as new and hardly worn from a fellow in Eire who preferred his Coyle Costume hat. It said "Pure Beaver" in the hatband, and I contacted Marc Kitter in Germany with a photo of it, and he said that it was just so, and recognised it and that it was from a batch of only three he'd made with a particular type of inner band. It has withstood all that a northern English climate has thown at it, though I would love a Penman "Last Crusade" hat.
I've located the shop in London that sells the original and official Herbert Johnson Poet hat. I've had the fitting, and will pick it up at the end of the month... just in time for my adventures in Burma. This fedora is awesome!
I got a Stetson temple for my Indy costume. Beautiful hat, and very high quality material. It's a bit expensive, but well worth the money, it ties the whole costume together. I'd say it looks closest to the Last Crusade hat. Got mine off Amazon in like 2 days.
theirs a nice village in Lancaster Pennsylvania with a home made leather shop with a nice indie style fedora (crown and floppiness) next time i visit im definitely picking it up its awesome
Excellent Video! I am very grateful to you for putting it together and adding the recommended hat store websites. My favorite hat is the Raiders hat. To me it is easily far and above the most beautiful of all the Indy hats I have seen in the movies and on the internet. BingCherry
I heard there is a mandela effect where most people remember seeing indiana jones with a smaller hat. And i could've sworn that hat was never this grotesquely tall almost like a top hat when i watched these films.
This video is great. The only thing I would add is that to do the Raider's Turn on the fedora, you have to rotate the hat slight forward, and then bash it. Those instructions are covered in John Penman's Raider's bashing tutorial.
Well you recommend both penman and adventurebilt. But what about the official herbert johnson hat? It can be acquired even easier than the others. What do you think about that?
Wow, great video that I accidentally came across. Thank you for posting. I like both the Raiders and the Last crusade style. I prefer not to have the turn. Due to cost I’m ordering the Akubra federation IV deluxe from a Hattery in Australia that I’ve dealt with. First class Hattery and they will do the shaping for me. You can’t kill an Akubra hat. They are unbeatable as I can vouch for owning some.
I don’t know if this has ever been brought up before, but when the hat that Harrison Ford wears is shown to be a size 7 1/4, people need to realize that 7 1/4 in the UK is not the same as in the United States, because there is a difference by 1/8 of an inch. In the UK 7 1/4 (59 cm) is a 7 3/8 in the US. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, because the only reason I’m bringing this up is the fact that Herbert Johnson is a UK hat company.
Herbert Johnson was loaned original 1980s Poet Fedoras from a private collector. These were all handmade by Richard Swales himself. They are used as physical reference pieces to make their new hats thread for thread. You can not get a more authentic Raiders fedora anywhere online.
You gotta wear the Indy outfit your way. Making it your own is the best way. Bringing it to life with your personality. I have the grey clipper hat in brown. So I am authentic but not Poetic.
I really love this video and watch it every 6 months or so. Thanks for making it, and make more if you can! About other props or moves.. you'd get my views, thats for sure..
I own a Minnetonka Aussie hat, leather, people mistaken it for the Indiana jones hat all the time, I love it, and wear it like a couch..... so comfortable and its +1 head armor. I go on extreme hikes, and campouts, and it's saved me from all sorts of slices, pokes, and even rain. Check out Minnetonka hats on ebay or something.
Eric Watson, of Watson Hat Shop in Phoenix, makes a decent Indy at a good price. I have his grey which I tweaked to a Raiders style with long pinch and the turn. The hat is hare, with a little steam it shaped up just like the original movie fedora. I wear it every day. Expect to get a brown soon.
www.hufvud.com/fedoras/leifur-sable-brown-light This is at least one of the best. You can get it in which ever felt you want. The Akubra adventurer is pretty awesome too though, except $100 less. The brim of the Akubra is wider all the way around, some people trim them, but Raiders is my favorite by far. I have the Akubra. If you read about all the beating and crushing they did to those hats to make it look like that, why not find one thatll stand up to it, and beat it to death yourself?
THANK YOU for not using Kingdom of the Crappy Story clips. Personal opinions aside, I thought it was funny how the vid attributes the poor box office performance of Temple on the altered style of hat. hahaha. I know, you were just being facetious, but it was really funny, all the same. Nice vid!
I didn't mention them because sorry they aren't Indy Hats. They are nice looking fedoras, but this video is about Indy's hat from the films and they don't look anything like it.
Thanks Rob for the research and work you performed to make this video. I just received my Herbert Johnson Poet made with rabbit/fur felt, and it fits perfectly, albeit at a premium price (the model used in Raiders). My only complaint is that it is extremely soft, and you must re-bash and crease the fedora with each wearing. Perhaps you know a technique to stiffen the felt? Yes, there are how-to videos all over youtube concerning this, but I am trying to find the best stiffening technique that won't compromise my investment by affecting the fedora adversely. If you have some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Good video but I have to point out that starting the raiders turn talk with a shot from one of the only scenes that doesn't feature the raiders turn was pretty funny.
I bought a brown filt fedora hat looks much like the indiana one. and it has the same function where you can literally step on it and after that, you just flap it hard and its back to normal. I bought it at a local hat store in my country for only €70
Great video! Although, as an avid fedora wearer, I would assume that over the years Indi collected more than one brown hat! I have. There is the Akubra Federation V which is a great hand made Aussie hat that looks allot like an Indi hat but at a fraction of the price. You can find one of these at The Hattery in Katoomba (Australia) or on hatsdirect Seriously though. Awesome video & hat spotting!
Yes, the Hattery. I’ve done business with them. First class all the way any very personal service all the way from Australia to the USA. I’m ordering the federation IV deluxe. It’s a notch higher in quality for an extra $40. Worth it. They are getting a shipment in April and are setting one aside for me in my size.😊 they also pre measure it for an exact fit since we all know sizes can vary a bit from what it says inside. They will also shape it for me.
I also bought a Christies "Adventurer" but these do no withstand our weather. Indeed, on the first day I owned it, I wore it out, and got caught in medium rain, and on arriving home, it looked like an authentic "Poet" all right but in the scene at the beginning of "Raiders" where Harrison Ford comes up out of the water (in badly wilted hat) onto the float of the seaplane. These are only £55 and though they look good it wont stand the weather like a properly made Adventurebilt or Penman.
+CHASE LEANY Yes, it matters to me, simply because I am BOTH a Raiders fan, AND a hat aficionado. However, I certainly understand that most people who are fans of the movie couldn't care less about the hat issue, so I respect your wondering about its importance (or lack thereof).
Very cool video, I really enjoyed your presentation. John Penman is a great guy and his hats are definitley quality. As far as my choice of Indy hats, Raiders is the one that started it all and is my favorite by far!
They still make the Crusade style "Poet." But they aren't really committed to keeping all the details accurate like the other companies I mention. I don't know for sure, but I think they are using a different hat block today from what I've seen.
Now that the original block has been found by Herbert Johnson, the most accurate hat you could get is from them. They also now do a ‘deep sable rabbit felt’ from the 1980’s so it is floppy like the one in Raiders!
very nice job rob! love the way you got a lot of the info out . i have heard that penman hats and adventurebuilt hats are very good , but i went with todd's costume for there downtowner hat which is beaver felt but made to look like the raiders hero hat , i like the style , i also bought the uptowner hat from todd's that is a bit more pliable and looks more like the last crusade hat. you can see my youtube reviews to see thse hats. but once again , great video!
To all the people who are asking about the Akubra Fed IV, just read their own website it says and I quote "The blocks used for this hat are original wooden blocks made by Akubra Hats. They have no pre determined shape. At no stage do we make any claim that this hat is a replica of the Indiana Jones hat as used in the movies. This hat has been made on a set of older hat blocks, and has been left in an "open crown" state allowing customers to shape according to their desire." Screen accurate? No.
Great video! My personal favourite is the Last Crusade fedora, currently satisfied by the Todd's Costumes 'Raiders' hat. (A solid choice for $120.) I hope to get a Penman someday though. (And no, I have no affiliation with Todd, other than being a satisfied customer.)
My favorite hate and favorite outfit is the Crystal Skull. If you look closely, Indy's outfit and accessories look newer from each film. For anyone's interests, Adventurebilt makes the Crystal Skull hats.
Can you do a review of the hat used in Crystal Skull? And share with us anything you may know about the next movie in reference to the next Indy Fedora?????
It’s been proven that Herbert Johnson never actually lost the hat blocks and I believe that instead they remade new hat blocks because of the need for the hats to have better comfort and to stay on better during stunts. The reason I believe this is what happened, the reason the raiders turn exists is because Ford turned the hat and redid the pinch for stunts as it wouldn’t stop falling off. By twisting it he made the oval while on his head smaller and that would prevent it from falling off. Hence why they would perhaps be asked to redo the hat block for the following films.
I bought a poet from Christy's in London and I paid £145 it came unshaped so I had to shape it to the the raiders style it's fur felt and is a little stiff but I love it it's good enough for me .
Nice clip. I'm an Indy fan, but not excessive. I bought a couple of Fedoras which pleased me, not to copy exactly Indiana Jones. They are more of the temple of doom style. The crown taper looks much better imho than the stove pipe style
I heard that since the merger between the Adventurebilt Hat Company and the Pennman Hat Company the missing Indy Hat block was found!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring back the Indy Original Hat design from Raiders!!! It may not mean much to many people but to a True Indy Fan it means everything!!!
When, a few years ago, I wanted to get myself a 'genuine' Indy hat, I naturally thought that the officially licensed one would be it. But no, far from it -- the 'official' hat doesn't even come close. Why is that? After all, fans in search of an Indy fedora want a hat that looks just like those in the films, don't they? But recently I was lucky and found a (reasonably priced) fedora from a German hat company called Mayser that looks very much like the Last Crusade model, though it wasn't marketed as an 'Indiana Jones hat'.
@TheSwinny39 i have the adventurer and gave it turn and the raiders bash and makes an amazingly accurate hat, i agree it should have been listed as its the most affordable plus its rediculously accurate.
I only deleted ones that appear like "spam," trying to lead people to buy the Fed IV which in my opinion isn't screen accurate. As you can see your comment is still here. If you try to insult me like Sirgromulus did, you will be deleted.
As someone who is lucky enough to own both an Adventurebilt and a Penman, I have to say they are both equally well made... I prefer to wear my Penman, because I prefer how the sweatband feels/
This is great but how is Steve Delk's health? Is he in a hospital? Is he recovering at home? How is he doing??? I pray to God he is alright.

They are unbeatable as I can vouch for owning some.
wow great vid my man
what are you doing here
Raiders hat... always and forever. However I like the Last Crusade also..:)
Why was ther no of mention
about Screen Capped hats by Brian Lalonde Fedora's ???
Mine is a garrisonhatters - handmade and extremely screen accurate! Good price to - check em out!
Good price? $250 for rabbit felt and $450 for beaver felt! Those are expensive prices to me!!!
yep, an original herbert johnson beaver felt hat goes for 650! lol
chalino19 you’re right!!!
As an Indiana Jones fan, I'd say that the Fedora from the first Indy film is my favorite, and I became a fan of the Indiana Jones films in 2008.
Well done mate. Always liked that somebody made this video. Raiders forever; if you have the height for it!
I bought a brown filt fedora hat looks much like the indiana one. and it has the same function where you can literally step on it and after that, you just flap it hard and its back to normal. I bought it at a local hat store in my country for only €70
I bought mine from London. Lovely hat. Fabulous felt, real top quality. Looks exactly like Indy's hat.
warriorvermin where?
I gotta say, I like the Last Crusade hat the best
Such a perfect video ! My favorites hats ever ! Thanks so much !!
6:32 epic face
Great video!
Although, as an avid fedora wearer, I would assume that over the years Indi collected more than one brown hat! I have.
There is the Akubra Federation V which is a great hand made Aussie hat that looks allot like an Indi hat but at a fraction of the price.
You can find one of these at The Hattery in Katoomba (Australia) or on hatsdirect
Seriously though.
Finally I have a Penman Fedora. It's wonderful.
Just want to ask why didnt you recommend herbert johnson? since they made the original fedora
Hubert Johnson is a savile row tailor. There is a reason why there is no price listed (very expensive. I wouldnt be surprised if it was $1k+)
Thanks for the heads-up. Visited the forum thread (and posted there). Very interesting...
growing up i did not notice the difference in hats. even as i watched this video i thought to myself.... does it really matter?
+CHASE LEANY Yes, it matters to me, simply because I am BOTH a Raiders fan, AND a hat aficionado. However, I certainly understand that most people who are fans of the movie couldn't care less about the hat issue, so I respect your wondering about its importance (or lack thereof).
Depends
@Sirgromulus Is the Federation iv better then coyles downtowner? im so torn! lol
The Raiders Indy Fedora hat. I got The Akubra "Adventurer" Fedor hat.
Great video man! Loved all the info. I had the licensed one, definitely need to pick a hero style soon.
Very cool video, I really enjoyed your presentation. John Penman is a great guy and his hats are definitley quality. As far as my choice of Indy hats, Raiders is the one that started it all and is my favorite by far!
really good video do you got your fedora from penman hat co. now?
Thank You, I thought I was going for the temple of doom hat but now after seeing this video I am going for Raiders.
They also now do a ‘deep sable rabbit felt’ from the 1980’s so it is floppy like the one in Raiders!
hahahah I told you the aussie hat no wonder people always mistaken my Minnetonka "the Aussie hat"
very nice job rob! love the way you got a lot of the info out . i have heard that penman hats and adventurebuilt hats are very good , but i went with todd's costume for there downtowner hat which is beaver felt but made to look like the raiders hero hat , i like the style , i also bought the uptowner hat from todd's that is a bit more pliable and looks more like the last crusade hat. you can see my youtube reviews to see thse hats. but once again , great video!
I love the temple of doom hat the best the one in the plane. In the Indy comics it always looks like the Raiders hat.
I since got rid of the Adventurebilt Henry and bought a Peter Bros, which are superb.
What is your favorite hat ? I'm pending between Raider and Crusade...
I'd like to know witch one you prefer :)
Raiders is my fave. Great video. Thanks :)
What about that shirt? Where can I get one?
Not sure, the website doesn't list the price anymore.
How is your penman hat holding up now after these years?
When, a few years ago, I wanted to get myself a 'genuine' Indy hat, I naturally thought that the officially licensed one would be it. But no, far from it -- the 'official' hat doesn't even come close. Why is that? After all, fans in search of an Indy fedora want a hat that looks just like those in the films, don't they? But recently I was lucky and found a (reasonably priced) fedora from a German hat company called Mayser that looks very much like the Last Crusade model, though it wasn't marketed as an 'Indiana Jones hat'.
My fafourite hat is the raiders hat, the first one. :)
@TheSwinny39 i have the adventurer and gave it turn and the raiders bash and makes an amazingly accurate hat, i agree it should have been listed as its the most affordable plus its rediculously accurate.
I personally love the fedora Harrison Ford wore in the "Raiders" film and I wish I had a hat like that.
Amazing artist it's thanks to David Sylvian I discovered her, will be seeing her in London in November, so looking forward to it❤😊
Thanks for the review, Really great quality hats.
Wow, my grammar and punctuation in this comment was really atrocious. Yikes.
