We are happy to hear it and hope you are enjoying your vintage treasure. An original HJ hat bearing the shop address of 38 New Bond Street would be dated from between 1899 and 1975, so yes, your estimate of the 1920's would fit with that.
Hello Michelle, I just received my Herbert Johnson Poet. Say thanks to Denise for me; she's a wonderful lady who helped me through every step of the ordering process, which was difficult due to the pandemic as well as bad weather here across the pond. I purchased the 64 cm size which is roughly equivalent to the knock-off Chinese version labeled "2XL" (which has only a 4.5" crown). I'll use that one for yard work. My new Poet fits me perfectly. My question is about stiffness. I ordered the rabbit fur/felt version. Looking at various youtube videos, there are some instructional videos involving different products (available on Amazon) that can be sprayed on the fedora to make it stiffer. However, I'm reluctant to order these products, because I'm afraid they may have questionable results. I ordered what I consider a work of art, and there is no way I'm going to compromise the quality of a Herbert Johnson Poet, however, I would prefer my fedora to be a little stiffer (once it's bashed and pinched perfectly.) If you can give me a hint on stiffening, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, it has been a pleasure doing business with you.
Wonderful news! So happy to hear your hat has arrived safely with you. I will pass on your kind words to Denise. In terms of making felt more set and stiff...other than the pre impregnated stiffener within the felt I get supplied to me I also use professional level stiffeners designed for brushing on inside the crown. Chemicals such as these aren't available to the public and such things can vary worldwide as to what is available to do such tasks. As a hat owner you would need to look at a spray on product available to you that doesn't flake or discolour the felt. Something like this with some really good reviews: www.amazon.com/Bickmore-Kahl-Hat-Stiffener-Texture/dp/B003YD92JU As with all stiffeners it is best to go gently and build up rather than try and acheive your desired result in one go. Patience! If you have a look at a topical spray and want advice on it or application I would be happy to help and walk you through the process. Just drop me an email at enquires@herbert-johnson.co.uk I wish you great joy and adventure wearing your HJ! Best Michelle and Team HJ
Very useful video! Any tips on how to mold the back of the brim upward, last crusade style? I try to just curl it a bit, but it seems to deform other parts of the brim.
@gustavogirotto working it by hand when needed will help but may need regular agjustments. For a more secure shaping to the rear of the brim, its best achieved with the correct wooden brim flange block. Nothing beats having this equipment I'm afraid. If you don't have this equipment a professional hatter should be able to offer this service.
Hi Tony. Yes, the use of Hat-Jacks (aka hat-stretchers) are a good part of hat care and we would recommend the proper use of one for your fur felt hats for storage or display when not in wear. This is particularly good for those who have a long oval head shape or who may want to mimic this in a display hat. For hats you wear, it's a good idea to use a Hat-Jack or block insert that mimics the wearers head shape. We would also recommend storing your hats away from direct sunlight or heat sources and also protecting them from dust/moth damage when being stored. Thank you for your enquiry. More hat-care advice can be found on our website/channels or please do contact us for any further assistance. Best wishes, Team@HJ
Thank you
Anyway you can show us how shape the back brim upwards non back slope?
I always thought the back up flange was sharper than the back downslope. imo.
I have a beautiful Herbert Johnson homburg. The liner says 38 New Bond Street and was sold through Brooks Brothers. I think it is from the 1920s.

Would you suggest keeping, storing or displaying a fedora on a Hat stretcher in order to keep its shape?

@@HerbertJohnsonHatters1889 Great, thanks for the advice 😊
@@morethanatimelord our pleasure 😊🤠
I steam my fedora brim and push the sides up with my hands for a minute and the brim shapes like it did in raiders of the lost lost ark.
