Looks really good, nice to see that the hatters care about the bash as much as the indy fan community does. One thing though is I think the back might be a little high, but it is hard to keep the sides straight then.
Thanks :) The back will always be slightly lower than the front pinch but not so low the sides begin to collapse. This hat is a size 62cm so it can stand to be proportionally higher than on the smaller sizes. Our crown blocks are graduated so the open crown of a size 62cm is higher than that of our average block of 59cm. Proportion is so important to keep the hat over the entire size ranges looking balanced. The devil they say is in those details! :)
@@HerbertJohnsonHatters1889 thank you I just ordered a hat of Amazon cause I’m a huge Indiana fan and it says you have to shape it yourself I was very worried as I’ve never done that before so I went on RUclips and found your change thabk god you made it look easy I’m hoping the hat arrives and is quality so I can put wnat I learnt to good use
@@herc1113 I'm glad you found this helpful. Shaping hats takes skill and patience but with enough practice you should get there. Just don't overdo the steam, a little at a time is best. Good luck!
Hi there. Around a half inch taller at the pinch would be expected to sit well. I wouldn't go beyond that much difference front to back unless aiming for a teardrop or diamond with the back much lower. For a standard centre dent like this a half inch difference works well.
In a nutshell, yes! The Akubras are a well loved mass produced felt and therefore occupy a very different part of the market to us since we are fully bespoke and hand crafted to order. Whilst you will certainly notice a marked difference in felt quality levels when handled side by side - ALL FELT as a material will respond to manipulation - especially under some heat and moisture (steam). The results possible will vary depending on the felt fibres, density and overall thickness and also levels of stiffening agent impregnated into the particular felt in question. The age of the hat and how often it has been reshaped will also affect how well it can be reshaped and hold said shape. Part of hat ownership is good maintenance and a well made hat should last you with help from your local friendly hatter for reblocking and refurbishing as and when. So in essence yes please do have a play with shaping any fur felt hat which you own and go easy on the steam at first until you get used to this practice. Make sure your hands are free of excess oils, lotions etc. If this is a new practice for you and you want to familiarise yourself without the fear of ruining your beloved hat then perhaps get a charity throwaway felt hat to have a play with and gain confidence in steaming and manipulating shape. Have fun with personalising your hat!

We use steam irons to block the crown and flange the brim. The felt is allowed to rest and then the shaping is done by hand using steam as needed.
