  • As the world enters a new year, the war in Ukraine also grinds into another year.
Many Russians are still willing to believe the Kremlin’s narrative that the West is to blame for the war - but what are their thoughts on the future?
The BBC's Russia editor Steve Rosenberg, one of the few remaining Western journalists in the country, reports.

No, a handful of people can't represent an entire country but when is the last time that you saw a news report
that included interviews with 5,000 people carefully selected to get a balanced view of a situation?
No matter what the news story there are always only a handful of people interviewed
because logistically a reporter can't include interviews with hundreds or thousands of people
      in a news story.
And obviously foreign reporters are very constrained doing news stories in Russia now.
It's a very dangerous activity to be involved in.

A typical NATO propaganda. First of all, the war started not two years ago, but almost ten years ago, when the Ukrainian regime started its terrorist attacks on Donetsk and Luhansk. And secondly, there is war not only in Ukraine, but also in Russia. There was a referendum almost a decade ago when the people of Donetsk and Luhansk decided on their independence. Almost two years ago there was a new referendum where the people decided that these countries should be incorporated into Russia. So it was not Kiev or Moscow that decided this, but the people who live in these countries. That the people should be able to decide on their lives and which country they want to belong to, is a fundamental part of a true democracy. Thus, Donetsk and Luhansk are by the will of the people today part of Russia. And the majority of conflicts today take place precisely in these areas.

The sanctions have not reduced Russia's ability to sell oil and gas. The oil is now being bought by India and China, demonstrating what these countries think of the need to sanction Russia as a response to an illegal invasion. If it is not possible to blockade the export of oil and gas from Russia, then sanctions with the intention of depriving Russia of revenue to finance the war are pointless. The sanctions have, on the other hand, caused serious problems to western economies. We are evidently governed by fools.

It's massively cherry picked with only negatives stated explicitly and the rest of normality just mentioned broadly. Few specific people interviewed, happy people are ignored, unhappy and worried are prioritized, old women who don't look well off, a guy who's fishing in winter. The guy happily running is barely seen for a second in the background, a guy who looks sad on ice is focused on. Ads for military service are focused on, but not in proportion to how prominent they actually are. No broad coverage of social groups and opinions. Out of the ordinary price increases on eggs and tomatoes are stated, but the averages for the rest of food aren't. The actual effects on GDP PPP per capita aren't mentioned. With tragic music to complete the same negative narrative.
To put it simply, this is an example of propaganda. And the fact that it's delivered by a soft spoken man who looks caring and trustworthy is just another part of making it convincing
